1 Indiana Chapter Q 2 Wings Over the Dunes Visit our web site at gwrrainq2.org Visit us on Facebook at GWRRA Indiana Chapter Q2 August 2016 Newsletter Volume 19, Issue 8 Chapter Director Mark &Lucy Laing Greetings fellow riders! Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their summer. We have had some great riding weather. Great turn out last Saturday for our ride to South Haven, Michigan. We are in need of a Ride Coordinator. Our heartfelt thanks to Jim O'Rourke for his service during these last seven months. Let us know if you are interested to fill his position. Consensus vote decided to change our meeting time on Tuesday dinner rides back to 5:30 meet at Thomas's in South Haven. Dinner at restaurant at 6:30. You will be responsible to make your own reservations. Our annual picnic is Saturday, August 13 at Woodland Park in Portage. Set up time is 9 a.m. For anyone willing to come lend a hand. Food will be available at noon. Please bring a dish to share, your own drinks, and a lawn chair. Members and immediate family are free. Guests are $5. In an effect to improve communication, group text messages will be used to coordinate upcoming rides. If you have not given me or Lucy your cell number please do so asap. Please reply if you are NOT planning to attend when you receive the text. We will still utilize our Q2 Facebook Page and our Webpage, so please continue to check them when you can. As always, we welcome your suggestions. Ride your own ride and be safe. Its all about the ride Sincerely, Mark and Lucy Laing. 2 Membership Enhancement Coordinator Kelly Parker Membership Enhancement Coordinators (MECs) check and run the list, call new and/or prospective members, remind members of expiring dues and do the needed paperwork but it is YOU the chapter members who need to take over when a new prospect visits our chapter meetings to see what we are all about. Think about what kind of meeting you attended for the first time and what drew you back. What if you had come and no one acknowledged that you were there and didn t ask if you had any questions or explain the whys, where s and when s. It is the CHAPTER MEMBERS extending the hand of friendship again and again until new perspective members feel comfortable and want to come back and join us. Part of making new people feel comfortable is to be comfortable yourself. Most of us have been together for several years now we know each other s idiosyncrasies, what makes each other tick and how to get under each other s skin. It takes all kinds of people to make up a Chapter membership and keeping FUN in the fore-front of our motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge is a stress and tension releaser. When new people see us having good honest FUN and laughing and sharing funny stories about fun rides and fun places we ve visited just maybe they will want to come back. We need to mentor our new people. We need to extend that hand of friendship and get to know them. We need to take them under our wing and teach them the safety skills and share the knowledge that we have learned. We need to explain what GWRRA benefits are and expound on the GWRRA motto of Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge at all times to make our chapter a fun and great place to be. Find someone to invite and let s make new friends. Remember our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 2
3 Heat Stress Rider Education Dave & Beth Korwek I really don t need to tell you that the temperatures the last few weeks have been a bit on the warm side. I ve been going straight to work and straight home each day instead of taking the more scenic roundabout ways that I usually do. If Beth and I need to go somewhere on our days off, we have been taking the car instead of the bike which is our norm. Two things that you need to watch out for in extremely hot weather are Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. Heat Exhaustion is the body's response to an excessive loss of the water and salt, usually through excessive sweating. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: Heavy sweating Extreme weakness or fatigue Dizziness, confusion Nausea Clammy, moist skin Pale or flushed complexion Muscle cramps Slightly elevated body temperature Fast and shallow breathing To treat someone suffering from heat exhaustion with the following: Have them rest in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area. Have them drink plenty of water or other cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Have them take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath. Heat Stroke is the most serious heat-related disorder. It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Symptoms of heat stroke include: Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating Hallucinations Chills Throbbing headache High body temperature Confusion/dizziness Slurred speech Take the following steps to treat someone with heat stroke: Call 911 Move the sick person to an air conditioned or cool shaded area. Cool the person by soaking their clothes with water, spraying, sponging, or showering them with water and/or fanning their body. How to reduce the risks of heat related illnesses: Drink plenty of water and drinks like Gatoraid to replenish the electrolytes that you lose while sweating. Don t drink caffeinated drinks as caffeine restricts the blood vessels and inhibits your body to cool itself. (coffee, tea, pop, energy drinks, etc.) Limit your time out in the heat and take frequent breaks in a cool place. Try to do your work early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Use devices like neck wraps and cool vests that can be worn while outside. They do help, but are limited by time as to their effectiveness. 3
