Chapter Directors Message Hi Folks We hope that everyone is having a great Summer! July was another hot, rainy month with almost daily afternoon thunder and lightning here in Pinellas County no surprises there! We didn t let that stop the FUN though as we beat the heat and storms with rides geared to be heading home by Noon. FL1-M got cultured with dinner at the Oriental Super Buffet and theater night at West Coast Players in Clearwater to see the play, Death Tax. Representatives from SkyMed were Guest Speakers at FL1-M s July General Gathering. SkyMed provides emergency air ambulance and motorcycle transport all over the world for almost every type of circumstance. Coverage is available as a GWRRA Member benefit. Their presentation was informative and well-received. Some stayed after the meeting to talk with them further, and a few have already signed up for SkyMed s services. Also in July, several of our FL1-M North travelers were spotted together in the Maggie Valley area. The group has been enjoying rides in and around the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, continuing M s tradition of riding FUN! Charlie Nolan, one of FL1-M s Assistant Ride Coordinators, has been heading up some of those rides. Thanks, Charlie! See the story on page 7. We welcomed Mark and Debbie Augustine and Mike and Carolyn Korbel into the FL1-M Family this month. See their photos on pages 4 and 5. Highlights planned for August include a Fun Bowl event on the 26th, at Seminole Lanes. The event is being organized by Jennie Cox, similar to the one we had last year which was very popular and a lot of FUN! Watch for an in the next few days with information on sign-up for the bowling event. Wing Ding 40 is just around the corner running August 28 through September 1 in beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee. Kim and I are looking forward to it. Hope to see YOU there! We plan to meet up with the FL1-M North group for some great rides while we re in the area. See the Wing Ding Flier on page 15 to register and for the latest details on the Welcome Party and Registration Packet Pick Up. Curtis & Kim Palmore Chapter Directors FL1-M 3
It is our pleasure to introduce new GWRRA members, Mark and Debbie Augustine, to Chapter FL1-M! Please welcome them to the M Family when you see them. They have jumped right into the swing of things, with Mark leading the group on a Surprise Ride last weekend to Doe Doe s Diner in St. Petersburg followed by a tour of the KOA that everyone enjoyed. We re glad to have you in Chapter M, Mark & Debbie!! 4
Please join us with a warm welcome to Mike and Carolyn Korbel! They ride a Wing with a 2018 Motor Trike conversion kit. The Korbel s have been GWRRA members since The Korbel s visited with M two years ago when they were living in Arcadia, and have now moved to St. Pete. and decided to join FL1-M. We re glad you chose Chapter M for your GWRRA home, Mike and Carolyn! 5
Rider Education Corner History of GWRRA Education Part 3 In March 1988, GWRRA announced its new Rider Education Program, listing Levels I, II, and III with both Rider and Co-Rider involvement. In addition, the Rider Education Division instituted on-site MSF-certified Rider Courses at Wing Ding and many GWRRA Region and District rallies. Woodruff also went into the studio to produce his highly entertaining and informative series of video-taped seminars on "Co-Rider", "Touring & Braking" and "Trailering". In 1989, the enthusiastic demand of the GWRRA membership for another level of Rider Education was fulfilled with the addition of Level IV-Master Tour Rider, the program's highest level of accomplishment. In late 1995, the GWRRA Rider Education leadership recognized the need for enhanced Rider training above and beyond that which was then being offered. Plans were instituted for the founding of a completely new organization to be known as the Academy of Rider Training, or ART. In February 1996, Pete Woodruff was named Executive Director of the Academy of Rider Training. He was charged with responsibility for planning and implementation of advanced rider training courses. i.e. Two-up, Trikes, Trailering, Sidecars, Trip and Tour Planning and Group Riding. Those courses, and others, will be released as soon as they are researched and their curriculums developed and instructors trained. Taking over as National Director of the Rider Education Division in February 1996 was Charlie Davenport, a long time GWRRA Operations Officer who served as Region Director for Regions A and N and most recently, as the Senior Regional Director. Charlie is a veteran MSF Instructor, a Master Tour Rider (#10) and is dedicated to motorcycle safety. In 1997 Bill Noss, a long time Assistant National Director of Rider Education from Ohio, assumed the role as Director. Due to work commitments, Bill stepped down in 1998 and was replaced by Ed Brennan who was Bill's assistant from Tennessee. Ed had been involved for many years with the program as far back as his helping Pete Woodruff with the National Newsletter as the Editor. The Rider Education Division of GWRRA, working with MSF and other motorcycle safety programs, will continue its commitment to excellence in motorcycle safety. The acceptance of the new Rider Education Program has been dramatic. Participation jumped from 700 enrolled in 1987 to nearly 40,000 by 1996 with growth continuing. Virtually every GWRRA Region has Rider Education staff in place with Educators in every District and nearly every Chapter. To support these volunteers in their efforts, this revised Rider Education Manual is now ready for distribution and use, as just one more step toward achieving the safety goals of GWRRA. Having acquired national recognition from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation as "Outstanding Motorcycle Organization" almost every year since 1990, the men, women and children who have given so freely of their time to the GWRRA Rider Education Program can truly be proud of their part in building GWRRA's unparalleled heritage in the world of motorcycle safety education. 7 FL1-M North Rides Again! FL1-M folks just can t get enough of riding together here in Florida, so when some of them headed to second homes in Maggie Valley for a few months, it was a great opportunity to visit and get together for a ride in the mountains. They dubbed themselves FL1-M North and Chapter M Auxiliary. Here is an article about their trip. On June 30 th we visited the Chapter M Auxiliary (Half Back Division) - aka FL1-M North in Maggie Valley, N.C. We did some freelance riding and then met with Tom and Ruth Hicks that evening for dinner. Earl Rummel was already out on a ride so he was not able to attend, and Charlie and Judy Nolan were in Illinois for their son s birthday. We missed Mike and Pam Richards by a week. There were several bike routes posted on a map. We did several of them including the Dragon and Rattler. We actually got lost and wound up hitting the Dragon twice the same day. On another day we went up the Cherohala Skyway. On Thursday we met up with Charlie and Judy, Tom and Ruth, and Earl. Charlie led us on a ride past Looking Glass Falls up and down mountains and finally to a Chinese Restaurant. It was a wonderful ride. We returned on Saturday and Jennie immediately made reservations for next year! Submitted by Dennis and Jennie Cox From left to right: Judy and Charlie Nolan, Dennis and Jennie Cox, Ruth and Tom Hicks, Earl Rummel. Thanks, Dennis and Jennie, for sharing this story about your trip. And thanks to all of FL1-M North for carrying on M s tradition of riding FUN! 7
Motorcycle Escort for Ft. DeSoto Triathlon on July 7, 2018 Steven Burson and I met at Wawa s at US 19 and 38th Avenue before 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Steven s stomach was feeling a little woosie from something he d eaten the night before, but he still showed up. We left for Ft. DeSoto soon thereafter. We arrived at the staging area while it was still dark and checked in with the Race Director. All looked fairly good. A little lightning in the distant off shore clouds. The small rain cloud over southern Pinellas had dissipated. As the sun came up it was a beautiful morning. We prepared for the race, installing the Race Support signs on our windshields. The Race Official let us know they were only going to need one escort for the race. We always bring a spare bike, just in case, so Steven was able to go on home. Thank you, Glenn Duncan and Steven Burson, for getting up at the crack of dawn to perform motorcycle escort service for the Ft. DeSoto Triathlon! The race was very long and large. There were a lot of bicycles on the course. Two times around the island for most of the cyclists. Most followed the rules very well. The Official caught a few infringements near the end when the cyclists were very tired. After I let the Race Official off at the staging area I left the island heading home by way of Gulf Blvd. Stopped by Mama s Place on southern Seminole Blvd. for breakfast, then went on home. Submitted by Glenn Duncan, Assistant Triathlon Coordinator 8
FL1-M Team Celebrates Chapter Director s Birthday! When FL1-M s CD, Curtis Palmore, had a birthday the M Team managed to surprise him with dinner at Seminole Subs and a cake at the monthly Team Meeting. The theme of the cake was Golf since the bakery only had dirt bikes to represent motorcycling and that just would not do. Curtis is an avid golfer and Kim managed to sweet talk the bakery into putting some M&M s on the cake. (What else?!!) Here are a couple photos of the FUN! Some of M s Team Left to right: Kathy Jackson Joanne Duncan Paul Begin Curtis & Kim Palmore Ron Jackson Wavy Begin Bill Zulas Thanks, Team, for helping to make the day memorable! 9
