From the Director s Chair Ed & Jeanette Carr, FL1-K Chapter Directors A Summer Sign of Patriotism This being a particularly Patriotic time of year in which we are reminded of our patriotism by various Holidays on our calendar, but also by the things that some of our members have done to remind us of our heritage. Of course, the 28th of May was Memorial Day, a Federal Holiday to remind us of the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines & Airman who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. On the 11 th at our June Monthly Gathering, Don Black gave a compelling rendition of Johnny Cash s Ragged Old Flag. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on Jun 14 th. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14,1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The U.S. Army was founded on June 14 th, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of rifleman to serve the United Colonies for one year. At our July 2018 Chapter Gathering, our own Beth Harris will address the Chapter with a poem that she wrote about a group of Lady Memory Makers. I truly hope you attended the Gathering to hear it. If you cannot, the article can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. And last but not least of the summer events, is Independence Day. The 4 th of July is a Federal Holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, GWRRA partners, SkyMed International, and SkyMed s Emergency Travel Service Representatives Chris Durgin and Taylor Palosio will be Guest Speakers at or July Gathering. You won t want to miss the presentation. Don t forget to look at Jeanette s MEC article about Why we go to a rally where we know few if not anyone there. We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2018, Ed & Jeanette Carr, Directors gwroadrider@gmail.com July
Couple of the Year The Contact Patch: By Don Black The contact patch of a motorcycle tire can be thought of as the spot where the rubber meets the road. It is an oval shaped area about the length and width of a large egg. Things get complicated when lean, weight, turning, acceleration, breaking, and other forces including road surface are added, all of which distort the contact patch. Given that the tire is constantly deforming, the contact patch is a very dynamic feature. As you riders know, tires and therefore the contact patch, play a huge part of how a motorcycle works. The steering, stability, turning, lean, acceleration and breaking, almost every aspect of performance is highly dependent on the tires used. We have all heard of the term trail. That is the distance from the steering axis to the contact patch center, measured either perpendicular to the steering axis ( normal trail ) or parallel to the ground ( mechanical trail ). The big assumption is that the contact patch can be represented by a single point, where the rubber meets the road. In reality the contact patch is a large area affected by an almost infinite number of variables, and that makes it difficult to equate to a single point, and hence to determine trail. We tend to think of trail as a measured dimension that helps define the handling characteristics. But there are so many factors that depend on the tire that the measurement given in the bike specs tells only what the trail is while the bike is sitting still in a vertical position. Don t just think of the contact patch as the spot where the rubber meets the road. Think of it as the area on a rotating tire, around the total circumference where it meets the road. When the bike is upright, the patch is a nicely shaped oval. When the bike leans over the patch moves to the very edge of the tread. (This only happens on a round profile tire on a bike, not on a flat profile on a car tire.) This promotes quick steering and puts more rubber on the road because the patch widens and looses the oval shape. At extreme lean angles the patch becomes smaller. Even small changes in tire wear or tire pressure can change the contact patch and hence handling. Most riders can feel that their bike handles differently when the tires are replaced, even if the same brand and model is used. This is because the contact patch, and hence the trail have changed. This partly explains why changing tires can change a bikes handling in either a good, or bad, way. It might explain why some riders, and some bikes, have difficulty with some brands of tires. So when you change those tires expect to see a change in the way your bike handles. Ride the first 50 miles or so with the thought in mind that this will be a new experience. Get used to it. Adapt to where the rubber meets the road. Don & Judi Black Chapter Couple of the Year July
Flagler County Resource Center Food Bank Update Ruth Sober, Sunshine Lady, and Gary Sober, Webmaster It's Christmas...In August Once again our members will have the opportunity to make a difference in local residents' lives. We will be holding a special food drive for The Flagler County Resource Center's Food Bank at our meeting, August 13th. Gary & I ar e hoping to get a pictur e with a pile of donations & all chapter members attending that August meeting. This will take a little time after the meeting closes. We will need volunteers to move a few tables. We're envisioning taller people standing in back against a wall, next, a row of members sitting in chairs and the young and/or "limber" members sitting on the floor with a mound of donated foodstuffs. Please wear chapter shirts, if you have them. And for the "young and/or 'limber,'" trousers that you can scuttle in the hamper as soon as you get home...just sayin'! In June, you, Generous Chapter K Members, donated 117# of food to the bank. If our calculations are correct, we should be able to hit 3 tons of donated commodities to the bank by the end of years!. 3 tons! What a differ ence you all will have made! Thank you! Thank you! Generous Members of Chapter K. Gary & Ruth Sober Advertising Space Available! Do you know of a business that is looking for affordable advertising? With online publishing, we have unlimited distribution potential. Plus, it s about as affordable as it gets, with annual advertising rates starting at $50. Advertising applications can be obtained from Ed Carr. July
Membership Enhancement Musings Jeanette Carr, Membership Enhancement OHIO RALLY MEETING NEW FRIENDS Ed and I just returned from a 14 day trip. No, we didn t get to ride the trike. 1st day travels through Florida & Georgia were through heavy rain storms. There were some good riding days along the trip, but since we were in the truck it was easy for me to plan LOTS of time with family & friends in Indiana and Atlanta after attending the Ohio District Rally in Mansfield. Rallies outside the south are mostly held at fairgrounds with lots of camping fun. This was no exception with about 50+ onsite camps, many decorated in an effort to win the best site day and night awards for the 50 s Theme. Opening and Closing ceremonies were held in the outdoor theater under shade trees and adorned by flower gardens by the local men s club. The only people we knew ahead of time were the Ohio District Directors, Rudy & Linda Copeland. We first met them at the Region A Rally last October. This year they were at the Tennessee & South Carolina Rallies which we also attended. Arriving onsite, we did meet another couple we knew Dennis & Jan Peterson the TN C.O.Y. and A.D.D. Quite a friendly welcome committee. At the close of the 3 days, we made friends with many people we look forward to seeing at Wing Ding. How did we make friends? Well, let me tell you: Asking for directions Visiting with members during lunches and dinners Attending seminars Visiting vendors Watching & cheering from the grandstands as riders competed in events of fun & skill & we did sell a few bike tickets (Continued on page 6) CALLING ALL FL1-K MEMBERS!!! Did you recently attend a GWRRA gathering, rally, dinner ride, Footloose ride, or other GWRRA event where you had a GREAT TIME? We d love to have you write about your experience and all of the FUN you had so that we can share it with our members in our newsletter! Please submit any articles to Ed & Jeannette Carr (gwroadrider@gmail.com) prior to the article deadline (1st of each month). Share the FUN to encourage others to join us! July
From the Membership. God Bless The Memory Makers With Memorial Day last month and the 4 th. of July a few days ago, I thought of a group of local ladies that are truly patriotic. This group, THE MEMORY MAKERS, spend months quilting lovely spreads and quilts for men and women who have served in the United States Military. There are many Quilt Groups all over the country. Usually the receivers are selected from local churches. Not too long ago, my husband Don Harris was honored to receive a beautiful red, white and blue quilt on Memorial Day. It meant so much to him. I wrote this poem to honor these SPECIAL ladies. THE MEMORY MAKERS Her fingers are swift, and sometimes slow, She gets weary, but you would never know. Her love for freedom and her country too, Keeps her sewing with colors of red, white and blue. Her thoughts are for Soldiers, some dead, some alive, Those Patriots with Honor, Duty and Fear deep inside. She gives of her time and her energy too. She feels that is the least she can do. The quilts she makes are gifts for Veterans, And they appreciate them so. In their eyes SHE is a HERO, One they are Proud to know! GOD BLESS THE MEMORY MAKERS By Beth Harris (Continued from page 5) growing up in Indiana, I d only been to flat NW Ohio. Ed & I have ridden through SE Ohio. This trip through SE and Central Ohio was exciting because of all the rolling hills and great motorcycle roads. They are still my enemy in sports Go I.U.! but I much admit Ohio is a beautiful state. It is great to venture to new places and met new people. August Gathering: Billy Jones will be the guest speak on Rider Education Ride Safe. Hug your Friends. Enjoy Life. 7 District Ride Educators History of GWRRA's Rider Education Program Part 3. Taking over as National Director of the Rider Education Division in February 1996 was Charlie Davenport, a long time GWRRA Operations Officer who served as Region Director for Regions A and N and most recently, as the Senior Regional Director. Charlie is a veteran MSF Instructor, a Master Tour Rider (#10) and is dedicated to motorcycle safety. In 1997 Bill Noss, a long time Assistant National Director of Rider Education from Ohio, assumed the role as Director. Due to work commitments, Bill stepped down in 1998 and was replaced by Ed Brennan who was Bill's assistant from Tennessee. Ed had been involved for many years with the program as far back as his helping Pete Woodruff with the National Newsletter as the Editor. The Rider Education Division of GWRRA, working with MSF and other motorcycle safety programs, will continue its commitment to excellence in motorcycle safety. The acceptance of the new Rider Education Program has been dramatic. Participation jumped from 700 enrolled in 1987 to nearly 40,000 by 1996 with growth continuing. Virtually every GWRRA Region has Rider Education staff in place with Educators in every District and nearly every Chapter. To support these volunteers in their efforts, this revised Rider Education Manual is now ready for distribution and use, as just one more step toward achieving the safety goals of GWRRA. Having acquired national recognition from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation as "Outstanding Motorcycle Organization" almost every year since 1990, the men, women and children who have given so freely of their time to the GWR- RA Rider Education Program can truly be proud of their part in building GWRRA's unparalleled heritage in the world of motorcycle safety education.
