5 Chapter Director s Message By: Carolyn & Ted Russell, Chapter Directors Chapter W Rocks!! Dear Folks, I fall in love with Florida everytime I leave. Ted and I are home from our trip to Alaska. It was wonderful, but it feels good to be home. The chapter was busy while we were gone. The August Chapter Gathering had 55 to attend. I understand we had overflow into the restaurant. That just makes me smile. Also this month there was a breakfast at the Plymouth Woodshed and a lunch at the Tilted Kilt in Lake Mary. It seems like everyone that attended had a good time. This Saturday, September 7, Gary Hoop will be leading a ride to Wolfy s Waterfront Grill in Sanford. The ride will be leaving the Mobil station at 9:00 a.m. (See the details on the calendar page.) Jim Pickup will be hosting a lunch at Nick s Family Diner. This is a great spot and everyone always goes away with a full belly and a good time. That will be on the 17th at 11:00. Just meet at the restaurant regardless of what you are driving. And on the Saturday, the 28th, W will be riding to Astor, FL to the Blackwater Inn which sits on the St. John s River. The ride will be leaving the Mobil at 10:00. (Again, see the calendar page for details.) Our Chapter Gathering will be on the second Saturday of the month at Perkin s Restaurant in Apopka starting at 4:30. This is a time where we get together to chat and hear what s happening around town. The long distance Nova Scotia trip that took place in July will be presented for a 15 minute program this time. Lots of beautiful scenery and bikes galore. You won t want to miss this. Also listed on the calendar page is a benefit ride for TSgt. Michael Cleveland on the 21st. We hope you will go to this website to read all about this Vet Project and what is planned for a very special day. Our Holiday Party has been put on the schedule. Please mark your calendars now for December 14th. This is the second Saturday which is our normal meeting date. Save that date now. Gold Wing Raffle Tickets! 7 Two Fingers In The Wind By: Kevin Lang, Assistant Chapter Director There seems to be a common bond among motorcycle riders. It doesn't matter if you ride two wheels or three. It doesn't matter your status in life, your background or your gender. You love the open road, the wind in your face, the freedom it gives you. There is that common bond, you just love to ride. And, only Riders truly know this feeling. As they say, You never see a motorcycle outside a therapist s office. Riding gives me the relaxation and clarity that nothing else can. 8 FL District News Bill & Gina Berry, FL District Directors It s that time of the month again when our newsletter articles are due! Actually, I m a couple of days late! Our hot, humid and rainy days continue. It has become somewhat of a game dodging the rains and beating the heat. Hey, this Florida and we love it! With September comes the Region A Fiesta in Eufaula, Alabama September The Region team has prepared a FUNtastic time for all who attend. Florida is tasked with manning the Registration and Indoor Game area on Thursday from Noon 5 PM (Shifts: Noon-2:30 and 2:30 5) and on Friday from 8 AM until 5 PM (Shifts: 8 10, 10-Noon, Noon-2, 2-5). We need 4 folks for each shift of Registration and 10 folks for each shift of Games. FL1-M was the first to volunteer to help with Games at the Region A rally even before we asked! They will take the Thursday from Noon 2:30 shift for games. Thank you! We still need more volunteers. us with names, preferred area: Registration or Games, and the preferred shift. We will confirm with you once we check the schedule to see what shifts still need manning. A new Region A Couple of the Year will be chosen in Eufaula as Florida s very own Dana and Jo Voight will be completing their tenure. Wouldn t it be great to have Florida s District Couple of the Year, Donnie and Aimee Peters, be selected as the new Region A Couple! Florida can handle a repeat of this great honor! If you are attending the rally, be sure to support our couple on Friday during the selection process! Chapter FL2-A, Florida s very first chapter, will be holding a party (35th Anniversary) on September 7 in Lantana. They will have FUN and GAMES and FOOD! Everything is FREE and it is Double Point Month. They do ask that you RSVP by August 24. Contact Cheryl Smith, gwrider2up@gmail.com or Show your support for the first chapter chartered in Florida. I know you will have FUN! Gina and I will be there! October really gets the rally season in full swing. Start planning now! FL1-A, FL1-D, FL2-G, and FL1-H all have FUN events planned in October. Please support your fellow GWRRA FL friends. Also, our Mississippi friends have their District Rally/Convention October in Gulfport. Anyone feeling lucky?! Mississippi knows how to have FUN, too, and would love for you to join them in Gulfport. The District website has the details of these events under the FUN tab! Don t forget to start preparing for the January 2014 Chapter Conference. It is very important the Chapter Officers attend this event - January 4 & 5 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, Oldsmar, FL. We start early on Saturday. Plan to arrive Friday if possible. It is a new facility and should be great! We promise to provide as much FUN as possible and still get the business of GWRRA covered. 9 Rider Reminder: Target Fixation & Motion Induced Blindness By: Ken and Mary Ann Long, Chapter W Ride Educators Subject: Interesting Motion Induced Blindness - I am sure most of our Educator folks are aware of this video. However, a lot of our friends may not be aware of this manner of Scanning. Being from the old school of search, rescue, & survival, I remember learning & teaching these same techniques back in the fifties. Sure would have been nice to have had this video back in the day. Remember, you should carry contact emergency information, along with medications and allergies, readily accessible. Is your First Aid kit in your trunk? If it s in a saddle bag, you might not be able to get to it. Also, always carry your cell phone on your person, in a jacket pocket or on your belt in the event you get separated from your bike in an emergency situation, you can still call for help. This is frightening! It works exactly like it says, and is one major reason people in cars can 'look right at you' (when you're on a motorcycle or bicycle)---and NOT SEE YOU. From a former Naval aviator, this is a great illustration of what we were taught about scanning outside the cockpit when I went through training back in the '50s. We were told to scan the horizon for a short distance, stop momentarily, and repeat the process. I can remember being told why this was the most effective technique to locate other aircraft. It was emphasized (repeatedly) to NOT fix your gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any single object. The instructors, some of whom were WWII veterans with years of experience, instructed us to continually "keep our eyes moving and our head on a swivel" because this was the best way to survive, not only in combat, but from peacetime hazards (like a midair collision) as well. We basically had to take the advice on faith (until we could experience for ourselves) because the technology to demonstrate it didn't exist at that time. 10 Assistant District Director s Message By: Cliff Hotchkiss, Assistant District Director Okay, now we are heading for the fall season and it s time for the weather to cool a bit. Notice I said a bit, since we all know really cool doesn t come to us until December or January. Anyway, we have several special events coming up starting with the FL2-A event September 7th, then on to the Region A Rally in Eufaula, AL the 12th, 13th and 14th. In October we will have FL1-A s event, so plan on attending these FUN events. Fall also brings my favorite vacation time of the year. Ahhhh, there s nothing like riding the wonderful roads and soaking up the sights and smells of the fall leaf-changing season in the Smoky Mountains. I m going in mid-october and can hardly wait for it to come around! The annual Chapter Conference is coming in January. I always look forward to this as a learning opportunity and a chance to see everyone together in one place. Our member leadership is so incredibly important to our association and it s great to see everyone come together for the goal of having FUN here in Florida GWRRA. As always, I will be recruiting chapters to help with our district rally. Please be thinking of what your chapter would like to do and be ready to sign up. 11 Let s Go For A Ride! Man is it hot these days! Since I got back from the Nova Scotia trip on July 21, the bike has been out for a total of 335 miles. And that is over a full month of riding. My usual Wednesday ride has been cut back to a breakfast run and home by noon. When I got back from Nova Scotia, I did my usual bike clean up routine. Wash and polish even polished the rims! Since the trip was over 5,000 miles long, I also did an oil change including the final drive. Now the bike just sits in the hot garage most of the time waiting for a break in the weather! I did make one discovery this summer. It is really more comfortable wearing my mesh motorcycle jacket as opposed to my old habit of just wearing a long sleeve T-shirt. I read that in several places on Gold Wing forums and decided to give it a try. Instead of a long sleeve T, I wear a short sleeve T and the mesh lets enough air through to actually keep my arms cooler than the long sleeve in the direct sun. I think the perspiration evaporates better or something and provides evaporative cooling. Whatever the reason, it seems to work. Plus, now I have better gear on for safety. Seems like a win, win! The first fall ride I have planned is on September 7. It will probably still be hot and it s not really fall in Florida yet, but we re going anyway! Come join us!
