CELEBRATING THE MOMENTS! COLONY NEWS A Weekly Newsletter for Members and Staff of Meredith Bay Colony Club #99 August 31, 2012 SCOOBY STOPS BY FOR A VISIT THIS MORNING! The New Hampshire Humane Society is wonderful about bringing in animals to us as part of their Pet Therapy Program. Shown above with Scooby is Lynn who is one of the Humane Society s newer Volunteers. Companion animals are wonderful not only because of the unconditional love they bestow upon their owners but also because caring for a pet reinforces the need we all have to also be needed ourselves! Please be sure to see the insert Please RSVP by this Tuesday! QUOTE OF THE WEEK Great things are done by a series of small things brought together Vincent van Gogh JOKE OF THE WEEK. A man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess with his dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while. "I can hardly believe my eyes!" he exclaimed. "That's the smartest dog I've ever seen." "Nah, he's not so smart," the friend replied. "I've beaten him three games out of five." Page 3
FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX - Pool Table: Comment received that the writer had never seen it being used and recommended its removal to allow use of that space for other things. - A request for a new Breakfast item was received and passed on to Kurt - Question was raised as to why lights are being left on in The INN Dining Room when nobody is there. 6 AT SEA AGAIN???? From Club Member Terry Thomason: Many of us at Meredith Bay Colony Club still feel the waves of pleasure when we remember the wonderful Bermuda Cruise of the comfortable coach trip to the ship, the fine food and entertainment on board the ship, and the special memories of Bermuda, where for three plus days we explored the island at our leisure by ferry and by bus. If you were one of the folks who enjoyed that Cruise with us or if you missed it for some reason, there is a chance that another great opportunity may arise. There have been preliminary explorations of a possible Fall 2013 Round Trip Cruise from Boston to Canada! This seven day Cruise would include a coach pick up at MBCC, a shore two-hour charter coach ride to the pier in Boston, and back to Meredith Bay Colony Club at the conclusion of the Cruise. And of course your Family and Friends would be very welcome to join you for this special experience. The itinerary would include the ports of Portland, Bar Harbor, Halifax Nova Scotia and St. John, New Brunswick. With any luck at all we will be greeted by beautiful fall foliage at the ports we visit. If you think that you might have interest in this exciting adventure, please speak to Terry Thomason soon or call him at for additional information. For both the experienced Cruiser and the first time Cruiser this trip promises to be a wonderfully affordable way to get away! Page 6
APARTMENT AVAILABILITY: NOT ANY LONGER!! I am pleased to report that Apartment 106 is now committed and that we will be welcoming our new Members within 30 days! With no apartments available --- Now is the time to be joining our Wait List! We now have 26 on our paid Priority Wait List and that number continues to grow each week! WORD OF THE WEEK Palisade \pal-uh-sayd\ noun - a fence of stakes especially for defense - a long strong stake pointed at the top and set close with others as a defense - a line of bold cliffs "The biggest structure on the lot was a palisade made from wood harvested on the property, making the entrance look like a fortified structure." "What is known as Wenlock Edge, a great palisade, almost 1,000 feet high, running for 15 miles through the county of Shropshire, overlooks, near its eastern end, the tidy town of Much Wenlock." OSPREY NEWS In this morning s (Friday 8/31) Daily Sun there is a great article on how the Squam Lakes Science Center is able to follow tagged Osprey throughout their migration --- and how you can watch too! All you have to do is to is get on your computer and go to and after you are there look half way down the right side and click on the square marked Project Osprey Track and then you will find choices of maps and cameras that allow you to see and read about where a few of local birds have gone. As of this morning our own little family was still here! Page 7

THE CLUB HUB NEWS The Best Deal in Town is still The Club Hub s $1.00 Klondike Bar Available to you 24 hours a day! The price has gone up a bit so just in case you have been paying less out of habit --- it is time to pay up! The Club Hub is a Member managed service that depends on the Honor System for payment. As such we cannot bill you for items and we cannot accept IOU s. Special thanks are due to Member Jean Stephens (shown above) and her able group of volunteer assistants who make the store an inviting and attractive place to visit and to get all the essentials --- such as a Klondike Bar! There are other more diet oriented frozen treats as well. Please be sure to thank Jean for making it all happen! AGING WELL ON THE RADIO Each Wednesday at 8:35 on WEZS 1350 AM MBCC Sponsors Aging Well a talk show that invites a special guest to talk about issues of special interest to Senior or that showcases the special of work of Seniors. This week Aging Well will be on vacation Page 9
BUS TRIPS. A Note about Trips --- as we move forward we find new questions to be answered including that of whether or not the trips promoted here in the newsletter are open to our INN and GARDEN Members. Most of the time that answer is going to be no and here is why. The trips presented here are all sponsored by our Independent (Club) Members and are not typically going to include any kind of accompaniment or supervision from Staff. We have an obligation to provide supervision and assistance to our assisted living members which means that bus trips out for them will more likely be planned and supervised by Diane. 1. (SCHEDULED) A 2 Hour Cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee on the Sophie C. US Mail Boat. Date: Wednesday September 5 th (Rain Date: Thurs Sept 6 th ) Time: Leaving MBCC at 1:15p A two hour cruise that will return you to MBCC by approximately 4:45p Cost: $20 per person assuming we get the group rate (12 min) otherwise it is $24. Sponsor: Jean Stephens Special Notes about this particular trip: Ordinarily we would be limiting the number of participants to the number of seats on the bus and then adding later signers to a Wait List. Not so on this trip because we want more! It is close by which makes things easy and there is a minimum number (12) that is required to receive a discount. We would really like to have more than the minimum so that should someone have to cancel at the last minute that we don t create some unplanned for ticket price changes. We have room for more so sign up right away! Page 10
2. (Proposed) Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum Date: Tuesday October 2nd Time: Leaving MBCC at 9:30a Returning by about 3p Cost: Admission to the Museum is $7.50 Lunch will follow at the nearby Foothill Restaurant where you will be on your own! Sponsor: Carolyn Sutcliffe Notes: More information to be forthcoming 3. (Proposed) Christmas Shopping at Steeplegate Mall Date: Tuesday November 27th Time: Leaving MBCC at 10:30a Returning by about 4p Cost: Lunch will be on your own! Sponsor: John Eaton Notes: More information to be forthcoming If you are interested in any or all of these trips please be sure to sign up at the Front Desk it doesn t commit you (after all you don t have all the details yet) but it does help us to determine the general level of interest. CLOSING NOTES.. This and That: - No Movie this Friday Night!: Movie night is on vacation for the rest of the summer --- but will returning soon! - The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth Summer Schedule - Aug 28 Sept 1 The Hound of the Baskervilles Page 11
- The Member Art Committee is moving forward with discussions about how to set up our first Exhibition. It s never too late to join the committee --- just be sure to see me if you are interested. - Free Computer Training and Personal Assistance: Carolyn has worked with someone who is willing to come in and do a no-charge one hour group instructional period and who is also willing to provide 10 minutes of free personal assistance on your computer in your apartment. Ten minutes might not sound like much but to someone who knows what they are doing they might be able to solve that nagging problem that you have been putting up with or answer a few of those How do I do questions that we all have. Carolyn has been very impressed with his work and recommends him highly. What we need to know now is whether there is enough interest on the part of other Members to make a visit worthwhile. How can you go wrong? Please let Naella, Carolyn or me know if you are interested in attending a general session and whether you might also want some individual assistance. The free 10 minutes sesssions are limited to 5 so first come first serve! Meredith Senior Center Celebration! On Thursday September 20, 2012 from 11a to 2p, the Inter-Lakes Senior Center will be Celebrating National Senior Center Week and you are invited to take part in the festivities At 11a there will be a Celebration Luncheon that will also include music. Please be sure to RSVP to Becky Carey at by September 7 th. Have a Great Holiday Weekend! Howie Page 12
