Chapter Director s Message By: Carolyn & Ted Russell, Chapter Director s Happy 2013 to each of you! We are looking forward to seeing what 2013 has in store for us. I m glad the world did not end with the Mayan calendar. There are just too many wonderful, amazing things that will be here for us in this coming year. We are looking forward to great routes, restaurants, and some fun times with our motorcycling community. I just know there will be some good laughs along the way. That s just the way Chapter W rolls. December seemed to be jammed with things to do. We had the Holiday Party on December 1st this year. That was different and it turned out to be a fun evening. We announced our COY for We thank Brian and Connie Miller for all they do for Chapter W. Along with all our busy holiday season we still managed to ride some great roads and eat at some neat little restaurants: Osteen Diner, Hellas Greek Restaurant in Tarpon Springs, Bella s Pizzeria, Mary s Kountry Kitchen, The Mason Jar, and JB Boondocks. Not too shabby for some dedicated-to-riding-and-eating wingers. Hopefully you were able to jump in on one or two of those. We always seem to have a good time. In December we had a lunch ride every Thursday. In January we are going to alternate between Tuesdays and Thursdays. Of course we will have our monthly Chapter Gathering (I ll buy some candy: CHAPTER W rocks!). At this month s gathering we will be announcing the Individial of the Year. There s a ride scheduled to Stumpknockers (yum!) and also a breakfast ride over on the coast. The Chapter Conference (yearly GWRRA business meeting) will be held the first weekend in Lakeland for all staff members. It looks like January is shaping up to be one big fun jumble to riding and eating. This is the best time for riding in Florida! In just 10+ weeks will be the Florida District Rally. This state rally is always a good one. We are so lucky in central Florida to have it close to us in Kissimmee. Mark your calendars now for March 21-23, I hope you have some chances in the drawing to win the new 2013 Gold Wing. If you don t, just see anyone of the staff to get your chance to win. They are only a dollar. You just can t beat that. What a deal! We wish you the very best in the year ahead. You are our Chapter W family. You have enriched our lives. Here s to 2013! Carolyn and Ted NEW ADDRESS: 670 S Lake Shore Way Lake Alfred, FL Licensed, Bonded & Insured Local

Just a few PUNS! Venison for dinner again? Oh deer! A cartoonist was found dead in his home. Details are sketchy. I used to be a banker, but then I lost interest. French pancakes give me the crepes. England has no kidney bank, but it does have a Liverpool. They told me I had type-a blood, but it was a Type-O. I changed my ipod s name to Titanic. It s syncing now. Jokes about German sausage are the wurst. I know a guy who s addicted to brake fluid, but he says he can stop any time. I stayed up all night to see where the sun went, and then it dawned on me. This girl said she recognized me from the Vegetarian Club, but I d never met herbivore. When chemists die, they barium. I m reading a book about anti-gravity. I just can t put it down. PMS jokes aren t funny...period. Why do Indians hesitate? They have reservations. We re going on a class trip to the Coca Cola factory. I hope there s no pop quiz. I didn t like my beard at first. Then it grew on me. Did you hear about the cross-eyed teacher who lost her job because she couln t control her pupils? When you get a bladder infection urine trouble. Broken pencils are pointless. All the toilets in New York s police stations have been stolen. The police have nothing to go on. I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words. 6 ...in the Rearview Chapter Ride to Tarpon Springs By: Dianne Gray, Member On Saturday, December 8 th we rode to Hellas Greek Restaurant in Tarpon Springs. The weather was chilly on this dim December morning with a lot of heavy fog, which made it feel like a light mist in the air. Eventually it turned into a beautiful sunny day. Temperatures started at around 60 and went up to 75 degrees. KSU was at 9:00 AM from the Kangaroo Marathon in Tavares at the corner of 561 and 448. Our road captain was Gary Hoop. Gary led us on some great back country roads. We stopped at a convenient store for a break about a half hour before we arrived in Tarpon Springs. Hellas Greek Restaurant had an open air feeling with a lot of blue colors and blue lighting. Also it had a Greek Bakery. Gary called ahead for how many in our party and ETA. We got seated right away and received great service. The food was great and the friends were even greater. For future reference, the staff at Hellas informed us that if you paid to park, bring in the receipt and they would take the parking fee off your lunch bill. The ride home was awesome too. When are we doing this again? There are a lot of restaurants there. Tire Kick at Bella s Pizzeria in Lockhart By: Jim and Marilyn Pickup, Entertainment & Sunshine Coordinators It was a dark, cold, and stormy night when five hapless souls from FL1-W gathered together at Bella's Pizzeria in downtown Lockhart on a Tuesday evening. The first to arrive were Marilyn and Jim. They ordered their meal and slowly ate. After all, there was no hurry and they knew three others would soon join them. The slower they ate, the longer it seemed to take for Ted and Carolyn to arrive. Just as they finished eating, the wet and bedraggled two showed up. They sat down at the table and ordered their meal. Ted's phone rang, it was Michelle. She was at the corner of Walk and Don't Walk and couldn't seem to find the restaurant. Ted went out in the rain to see if he could find her. All of a sudden, Michelle drove in, sopping wet, tired and hungry. Ted came back in as Michelle parked her buggy. Michelle said as she came in the door that she must have driven through a monsoon as the rain sure came thundering down. All sat around the fire trying to warm up and dry their clothes. Ted told a few of his short stories with some laughs and giggles. Ah, what a delightful night it turned out to be. The hard rain let up, the moon came out, and they all had a good time.

...in the Rearview Lunch Ride to Mary s Kountry Kitchen By: Ted Russell, Chapter Director On Thursday, December 13th we rode to Mary s Kountry Kitchen in Tavares. The weather was clear and sunny. It was a good riding motorcycle day. We had kickstands up at 10:00 from the Mobil. I was the road captain on this ride. I chose a round about route through Astaula, over Sugarloaf Mountain, over to Hwy 19, and through Howey-In-The-Hills. We went across Little Lake Harris to CR 448 and on to Mary s Kountry Kitchen. The ride time was about an hour and a half. Ken, Mary Ann, Terry, and Allen had the back room reserved for us. They, along with Jim, Marilyn, and their neighbor Diane, had gotten there early. It was nice having the whole back room just for the fifteen of us. The food was typical Mary s, good down home country style. I didn t get a chance to eat because of starting colonscopy juice that afternoon. After lunch we all headed for home. It was a great ride. Everyone there made it a special day. When I pulled in to the garage my bike registered 81 miles. Lunch Ride to the Mason Jar By: Michelle Mowat, Member Thursday, December 20th, Carolyn was the road captain for a ride that took us to The Mason Jar just outside of Eustis on Highway 19. When we left the Mobil promptly at 10, we had 6 bikes and then ended up with 13 people for lunch. That included Ted, who was slurring his words a little due to a visit with the dentist. We had a new rider with us, Harry. Welcome, Harry! The weather seemed perfect, especially for us Canadians who know there s two feet of snow and -30 celsius weather at home. After lunch, some of the riders headed home, but some of us decided that Sparky's up on 40 would be a great place to head for dessert. After pie and coffee and another great visit, we headed back South, then split up and headed our separate ways.

...in the Rearview After lunch at the Mason Jar, some of us went to Sparky s for dessert! Great pictures, thanks to Harry!

Lunch Ride to JB Boondocks By: Carolyn Russell, Chapter Director...in the Rearview The Wing s thermometer said 45 F at ten o clock as we headed out to the Mobil to meet the other crazy polar bear wing riders. We were headed to lunch at JB Boondocks in Howey-In-The-Hills. I wore my Gerbings and had the heat cranked up, but I was the only wimp. Everyone else was just layered up. We headed south toward Oakland and stopped in at the West Orlando Powersports to see what was happening. We spoke to some sales staff. The move west to the other building seems to be in the works within the next month. After a little shopping and talking, we headed to the restaurant. As we pulled into the restaurant we were greeted with other wings riders that braved the cold to come out to share a meal together. Welcome to Denny Champ who we met for the first time. He fit right in! The day was sunny and cold. The high came in around 57 F, but I ll take cold any day over hot. It was a great ride! Proud Printers of this Newsletter

Listen to Your Mother By: Kevin Lang, Assistant Chapter Director Mother Nature that is. I remember when, I accompanied Carolyn to Lake Alfred to pick up her new trike. We took a scenic ride back and stopped at JB Boondocks for lunch. While having lunch, we noticed the skies getting dark and the wind picking up across the lake. It looked like a bad storm was brewing. We decided to sit it out in the comfort of the restaurant, instead of making a run for home. Then it hit. The rain came down in buckets and lightning danced all around. We were glad that we decided to stay in the comfort and safety of the restaurant. After the storm passed, we took a leisurely ride back home. We listened to the rumblings of Mother Nature and heeded her warnings. It was a good decision. Later that night, I heard that a friend of mine didn t heed the same warnings and made a run for home without such a good ending. A group of riders were on their way back from motorcycle training in Daytona. They got hit with the same storm and decided to make a run for home. As they were riding, lightning struck one of the riders directly and the other riders indirectly. It is believed that lightning had struck the ground next to my friend, traveled up the bike, into his body and exited out his neck. His whole body tensed up and he blacked out for a split second. How he managed to keep his bike upright is a miracle. He wound up spending the night in the hospital. The other riders felt the static charge and their muscles tensed with tingling all over their bodies. Again, it is a miracle that they were able to keep their bikes upright. All of them are doing well. We have all been there. With an impending storm we ask ourselves, do we make a run for it or do we sit it out? Every situation is different and sometimes it is a hard decision, especially, if you have a time table to stick to or other commitments. However, none of them are worth your life. So, always error on the side of safety and seek shelter when possible. Ride Safe Three Leaves By: Ken and Mary Ann Long, Ride Educators I previously wrote that I intended to re-read all my motorcycle books over a three year period and then re-read them again. My intension is to keep up my skills and not become complacent. As I come across an interesting item, I will summarize it and share it with you in my monthly article. From Proficient Motorcycling, here are some tips when stopping behind another vehicle. A reader of Motorcycle Consumer News referred to them as the THREE LEAVES. 1. LEAVE yourself an out. Stop to the side of the vehicle that will give you the best option to get out of the way while staying in view of a mirror of the vehicle in front. 2. LEAVE your eyes on your mirrors as much as you safely can to monitor vehicles approaching from the rear. 3. LEAVE your bike in first gear and be ready to move out of the way of any vehicles coming up from the rear. I hope my little tid-bits will help make us all better motorcyclists. Ride Safe

Who Belongs to GWRRA By: Paul Andberg, Membership Enhancement Coordinator Who belongs to GWRRA? (Excerpted from the Region N Newsletter) GWRRA members are men and women from all walks of life with varied interests and backgrounds. We have riders in their teens, riders in their 90's and every age in between! Many ride solo; many ride with their children or grandchildren! Some ride Wings that are new; some ride Wings that are "classics." Some belong for the technical information we share; some just for the enjoyment of riding with friends. As a family organization, typical GWRRA fun includes restaurant runs, picnic rides, campouts or CPR/first aid workshops conducted in a wholesome, fun-filled environment suitable for all family members. We also have charity runs, parades, ice cream socials and riding clinics. To be a member of GWRRA you only need to pay your dues. Regular members usually own a Honda Gold Wing/ Valkyrie motorcycle. We have individual and family memberships available. For non-gold Wing/Valkyrie owners we have a classification titled Associate Member, which is also available as individual or family. Some of our most dedicated members, though once apprehensive about riding as passengers, have discovered the joys of touring: the fresh air, the beautiful vistas, and the close communication with their partners. Many even learn to ride their own machines. While generalization about a group of individuals as large as today's GWRRA is difficult, GWRRA members are likely to be independent thinkers, fun-loving, generous, adventuresome, cooperative and unfazed by the natural challenges of riding in the rain, temperature extremes or highway uncertainties. Many members have completed CPR and first aid training, making them the best-prepared riders on the world's highways! Why belong to GWRRA? There are many benefits to GWRRA membership. Our members enjoy special camaraderie and fellowship and the comfort of belonging to the largest family of Gold Wing/Valkyrie owners. We like to share our pleasure in the freedom of riding motorcycles with others like ourselves. We strive for improvement by attending GWRRA safety workshops. We share technical expertise, news and tips about riding, maintenance and the best touring routes in the world. We also offer emergency towing and a roadside assistance program. Rescue is a benefit that ensures peace of mind, day or night. The answer to just about any question concerning Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles can be found among our 72,000 skilled and dedicated members. Members also enjoy benefits like discounts at many Honda dealerships, certain hotels, campgrounds and travel agencies. And, if you ever need help when traveling, our Gold Book Directory connects you with your nearest friends wherever you are. Let s Go For A Ride By: Gary Hoop, Ride Coordinator I never make New Year s resolutions. I m not sure why. Maybe it s because the big three (quit smoking, lose weight, exercise) don t really apply to me. I guess I ve always been of the opinion if one wants to change something, why wait until January? I will resolve to continue to make our monthly feature rides interesting! We ll take the roads less traveled and see what we encounter! The December ride to Tarpon Springs was great in that fully half the group in attendance that day had never ridden with us before! We enjoyed some great ethnic food at Hellas Greek Restaurant in the quaint downtown area followed by a little shopping for the ladies (and Ted)! Plus the weather cooperated giving us a nice full day of wingin it! It wasn t quite dawn to dusk, but it was close! This month our Saturday ride will be to just north of Inverness on the 26 th. We will eat at Stumpknockers on the river. For the adventurous, they have gator bites on the menu! If you haven t ridden with us in a while, it might be a good resolution for you for Come join us as we always endeavor to Ride Safe!
