Chapter Directors Mike Melton & Anne Sheets P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC From your Chapter Director We attended the District Officers meeting in Lexington, SC, and had some great news, some not so great, and a few changes. The District handed out certificates of appreciation for the District Team and Chapter Directors, which was a nice touch. Then we got down to business, with a slightly different layout. Each District Team Member was given an opportunity to address the attendees, with news, updates and etc, with Chapter Directors intermixed giving an update on what their chapter had done, and what they had planned. There were several ideas we picked up from some of the other chapters, you should see in the future. One thing that kind of stuck in the throat, was changes to the Seminar Presenters. We knew it was coming, but now, effective 1 April, there will be some things I can not present, until I go through some online training, and then a one day training session in person. So, my list will be getting smaller for the Saturday seminars, and what I can present at the Frogmore. But, I ll keep it alive as long as I can. Another item was the District has nixed the Chapter Plaque Capture. We had some very low turnouts last year, and so did some of the others, so now the District has implemented a Chapter Visitation program. I want go through all the details, but you can read all about it from the District Website (see URL below). The rules and a mileage grid is located there also. So, what does that mean to us. Well, one of the benefits are double points for certain months. Meaning, when it is our double point month, anyone who comes to visit us will get double points. Our double point visitation months are April and October. This means, anything we plan for those months, if another chapter comes to visit, they get double points. And of course, if we go to visit another chapter during their double point month, we earn double points. And it can be any chapter activity that is open, which all of ours are considered open. If they want to attend our Frogmore, they just have to pay for their tickets in advance, and come on down. One other thing we are doing this month is sending out a Chapter Survey. We want your inputs. We want your ideas. We are working on an online option, that we should know by the Chapter Gathering if it will work, and if so, we will send out a G-Mail to all, so you can complete it online. If you rather print out the two pages from the newsletter and hand it to George, Gloria, Anne or myself, then by all means. But please give us some serious inputs. And that is a wrap folks. Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful, Mike Melton 2

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-2@gwrra-sc-g.org Wingers-N-Waves Caribbean Cruise, 2017 After waiting a year since our last Wingers-N- Waves cruise, it was finally time to meet up with MJ and John LeBlanc and Bertie and Melvin Painther in Cape Canaveral, Florida. They all made their way to Florida the day before, but we opted to drive down the same day of departure. Remember the storms that spawned tornadoes in Georgia and made their way to South Carolina and northern Florida last weekend, well we drove through some of the worst wind driven rain and lightning we have ever experienced in a car for several hours before daylight. Scary stuff! Eventually, we drove out of this mess, made it to sunny Cape Canaveral, boarded the ship with some 6,450 other guests, and set out for the Eastern Caribbean on the beautiful Oasis of the Seas. This ship and its sisters, the Allure and Harmony, are surpassed in size only by Royal Caribbean s Quantum of the Seas as the largest cruise ships on the high seas. (More on the ship details later). We joined up with Deanna and Albert Cisson at the Wingers Hospitality Desk to pick up our nametags, lanyards, door prize and Group Tour tickets, T-shirts, other relevant information and purchase 50/25/25 and raffle tickets. Shortly after the Safety Drill, the Captain informed us that he would try to outrun the same storm we had driven through earlier and bypass our first port, Nassau, Bahamas, and head straight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The seas were a bit choppy, but we made it to Puerto Rico 48 hours later for a few hours in port. MJ and John managed to spend some time in San Juan, but we stayed on board. In St. Thomas, we took an excursion in small open air buses to the Mountain Top and visited Blackbeard s Castle. In St Martin/St Maarten, one side French, the other Dutch, two countries sharing one island, we boarded a comfortable air conditioned bus and toured both sides of the island followed by a boat ride and back to the bus and ship. We started every day with a good breakfast in the Windjammer Restaurant, which offered just about anything you could think of on a buffet, meeting at our table. Lunches were usually on our own, taking advantage of several food venues including burgers, pizza, hot dogs, buffet, or occasional local eateries in port. Dinner was always a special time in that we met at the same table in the main dining room for a three course meal. One or two appetizers and/or salad, main course (or a second one to share), and of course, a dessert or two and coffee. In our defense, we did a lot of walking on the ship and used the stairs as much as possible to burn off calories. Next week, we diet! Additional Specialty Restaurants were available for fine dining, including Chops Grille, Izumi Hibachi and Sushi, Giovanni s Table, Vintages, and Sabor Taqueria. We can t forget Johnny Rockets and Starbucks (John s favorite spot on the ship). I think it s safe to say, that we all really enjoyed the shows offered on board. The Broadway Musical Cats with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber was a full length musical show featuring the Oasis cast of singers, dancers and actors. The Oasis of (Continued on page 4) 3

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant (Continued from page 3) Dreams Aqua Show featured synchronized swimmers and a non stop performance of acrobatic performances and Olympic class high board divers into an 18 foot pool. Earl Turner, a Guest Entertainer, put on an electrifying performance of songs anyone over the age of 50 could sing along with great show! Come Fly with Me featured daring aerial artistry, dance sequences and vocal performances combined with scenic and video designs. Frozen in Time was all about the whimsical world of Hans Christian Andersen in a breathtaking ice skating show with scenes from The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and more. Even had a sand painter that told the story of The Princess and the Pea using only her hands, a light box and sand. Besides the aforementioned production shows, there was music playing throughout the ship s venues, pools and lounges. Jazz, Reggae, Opera, Disco, Easy Listening, Piano Bar, Country and Latin, something for everyone. There was Karaoke, BINGO, shopping, Art auctions, World s Sexiest Man and Belly Flop contests, basketball, shuffleboard, rock climbing walls, Ping Pong, a Carousel, Arcade, Casino, outdoor movies, appearances by DreamWorks characters, Seminars, trivia contests, back stage and galley tours, Library, high speed Internet, ice skating, jogging tracks, Yoga, Spa, Flow Rider surfing, swimming pools, mini golf, and a Zip Line high above Central Park, which John and Melvin worked up the nerve and gave it a try. And for the adults, the Newlywed Game, late night comedy, and the Quest, an adult themed scavenger hunt. The fun filled week ended with a Wingers 60 s Party, with music, dancing, a decorated cake and coffee. Did I forget to mention, we dressed in our best Hippie style clothes, and liked them so much we wore them to dinner and were quite the source of comments from other guests. GROOVY, MAN! All in all, we had a great time and had lots of laughs and plenty to eat. As it is with all good things, they must come to an end. So back home we went, cooking and cleaning after ourselves, until the next time... George & Gloria Servant Interesting stats on the Oasis of the Seas: 225,000 gross tons / 500,000 individual parts 1,370 gallons of fuel/hour at 21 knots 6,450 guests / 2,700 crew 1,614,000 sq. ft. of carpeting 86,110 sq. ft. of glass windows 158,500 gallons of paint 12,175 plants / 56 trees / 7,000 pieces of art 3,300 miles of cable / 150 miles of piping 153 miles of wiring / 33 miles of conduit 25 restaurants / 25 chefs / 220 cooks 24 elevators / 188 bartenders 110,000 ice cubes per day 4

Rider Education Safety Corner Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Asst. Chapter Educator Mike Melton P.O. Box North Charleston, SC What mask will you wear this month With a new year comes a chance to become anyone we wish to be. We all wear masks from time to time, so select a mask to wear that holds true, a Good Safety Committed Rider. We can all choose to wear the mask of commitment as a new or recommitted Level I of the GWRRA Rider Education (RE)Program. Let s all use the remainder of 2017 to spread the word of Safety by Commitment to all our fellow GWRRA family members. Safety by Commitment includes your bike, you and others. YOUR BIKE needs to be checked out at regular intervals regarding its operating efficiencies. Change the oil, check out all working parts, fix all non-working parts, and be sure to check the tires for wear AND proper inflation. Use T-CLOCS and become proficient at it. YOU too need to be properly checked out from toe to head. Be sure you are physically and mentally able to properly and safely operate your bike. Obtain the proper KNOWLEDGE in your head through training opportunities available to you. Schedule some training during the colder months so that you enhance your riding abilities before spring. OTHERS also need some attention so be sure they ALL know that WE are on the roads too. Make your AWARENESS plans now and implement your plan early in the spring. Yes, personal protective gear is very important and it is encouraged to be worn. Obtaining Level I will complete the first BIGEST step to our 2017 journey through the RE Levels Program. This portion of the journey will be from today through March 31, 2017 at which time we will begin the journey to Level II. Let s see if we can be the first South Carolina chapter to make 100% involvement on this worthwhile journey. If you are already a Level I than make a recommitment and share with your other GWRRA chapter family members by introducing three of your fellow riders to the program. Don t let this train leave us at the station (or bike at the Dairy Queen!). As a matter of information, there is absolutely no cost to those that choose to participate in the GWRRA RE Program. The only thing required is a commitment to safety and the completion of a short form. We all need to remind ourselves that we are FRIENDS for FUN, SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE. We need to take the first step to our commitment and that is the commitment to ourselves to pursue safe riding. Let s not fool ourselves by only wearing a mask; let s share this commitment and get others to join us. RE has stood for Rider Education but in Chapter G we can think of it as Rider Enhancement to better our riding skills and increase our overall knowledge of safety and the safety and welfare of others. Remember its Safety by Commitment. There are many in our GWRRA family that may need our skills. If we are out there taking care of our own knowledge, we can work to let all other road users know we are out there. We need to commit ourselves by doing what we can to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes to zero will be an exciting year for all of us and what a better way then by starting with a commitment to stay around for our friends. Don t forget to have some FUN this month at the many events that will be held. Check your GWRRA calendars to see what is going on during the rest of 2017, then PARTICIPATE and have some FUN Craig Miller... wear the mask of commitment and mean it 5

Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Motorist Awareness Usually when we talk about Motorist Awareness, we think about HOW to make ourselves more visible to motorists so they see us. We talk about wearing bright colors, moving around in the lane to call attention to ourselves, using hand signals to communicate our intentions, and making eye contact with drivers. We encourage riders to get into the habit of using the S.E.E. (Search. Evaluate. Execute.) approach to riding safely. The unfortunate truth is, most motorists are completely unaware of what hazards motorcyclists face and how we ride to avoid or minimize the risk. As a result, it is usually left to the motorcyclist to navigate hazards safely IN SPITE of motorist ignorance. It s helpful to the motorcyclist to remember WHERE the common danger areas are for accidents. With that information, our application of S.E.E. should be in full effect. Where Do Most Motorcycle Accidents Happen? Intersections: There s a lot to evaluate at intersections, but they hold the greatest risk to us. Drivers who are entering a rider s right of way. This includes cars that are turning left in front of you and vehicles on the side streets who are pulling into your lane. 37 percent of all motorcycle fatalities occur during a curve. We need to be extra vigilant on curves, especially with oncoming traffic. We need to always expect the unexpected. The majority of motorcycle collisions occur during the day. Why? Probably because motorists are not looking for us, don t see us or don t expect to see us. There s a lot of visual distraction during the day that could hide us from motorists. More than half of all the collisions that occur are among riders who have less than six months experience. People who don t know how to ride a motorcycle are often involved in motorcycle accidents. That s why it s so important to keep our skills at their peak. Rider Education courses are a good way to do that. Most collisions occur when riders are going at speeds of 30 mph or less. Why? Probably because motorists are not aware of our speed. We may appear further away because of our smaller profile. At slow speeds, we must be extra vigilant of what s around us. In short, it is our responsibility to: Always Ride Alert Ride Aware Karen Miller 6

We had a great time, enjoying the dishes representing both, the northern and southern customs. Thank you Guy for being such a great host. Oyster Roast Our Oyster Roast was hosted again by Floyd and Kathy Truluck at Truluck Island, out by Folly Beach, on Saturday, January 14.
