1 Gold Wing Road Riders Association Southeast Region A - South Carolina District CHAPTER SC G TRI COUNTY WINGS BERKELEY CHARLESTON DORCHESTER The Official Publication of the GWRRA Tri County Wings, Charleston, South Carolina December 2014 Remembering our former Chapter Director, Maryann Lamb SC District District Director Phil & Judy Stone Assistant Dist Director Craig & Karen Miller J.W. & Yolanda Worley Chapter G Team Chapter Director Vacant Assistant Director Mike Melton Rider & Asst Educator Craig Miller Mike Melton Motorist Awareness Karen Miller Mbrship Enhancement Coord Anita & Fred Hull Chapter Treasurer Evelyn & Dan Pittman 2014 Couple of the Year Floyd & Kathy Truluck Activity Coordinators Anita Hull Karen Miller Kathy Truluck Goodie Shoppe Dan Pittman So, there is so much that can be said about Maryann, but so little time. So, I will give my best effort at remembering just who and what Maryann Lamb was to us. Maryann joined GWRRA with her husband Guy, in October, Guy had just purchased his new Illusion Blue 2003 Gold Wing. That was after Maryann convinced him not to buy the Kawasaki 1500 Nomad. She didn t like the seat on it. While they were enjoying their new Gold Wing, Maryann and Guy started coming to Chapter G meetings. They enjoyed many of the rides and activities and participated in many things. Maryann really liked to ride on that Gold Wing. In May 2004, Maryann was asked to help out with Chapter R, in Orangeburg. So off she goes with Guy, Big Blue and Froggie Mae on the back, to see how they can help. And what did she do, stepped up to be the Assistant Chapter Director (ACD). She wrote of all the friends and fun she was having, helping with the planning and activities there, until. In 2004, they went to Grapevine, TX for Wing Ding XXVI. While there she road the bull at Gilley s for her birthday, and had a 5 layer Chocolate on Chocolate cake. Talk about big things in Texas! Another one of her trips was what she described as the 13 states in 11 days, as they toured through the New England states and into Canada in June Tropical Storm Arlene followed them into Bar Harbor on the way up, where they stopped to have some Main Lobsters, which was one of the highlights of that trip. While returning from Canada, Guy found out the border patrol people didn t have a since of humor, when they asked Guy if he had anything to declare and he answered, only her. He got to answer a few more questions after that. Newsletter Editor Mike Melton NEXT CHAPTER GATHERING Saturday Jan 6 TH (Continued on page 4)

2 Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC SAFETY Asst. Chapter Educator Mike Melton P.O. Box North Charleston, SC Well what to talk about this month? I think we will look at what we have to do in the cooler weather. Recently, we rode to Easley, SC for the plaque capture. It was 30 degrees outside when I left home at 7am so I layered my clothing. This turned out to be the correct thing to do. Some of the riders had Electric clothing while some did not have anything but a light jacket and gloves. You have to remember that at 70mph the temperature is lower than what the gauges say it is. You have to keep your legs and upper body protected so to do this, we need to wear insulated pants or in a pinch put your rain suit on over everything else. This will help to break the wind. You will also want to have some winter gloves and two pair of socks. If you have heated seat and grips turn them on. Make sure your vents on the bike are closed. If you start to feel uncomfortable or cold, stop and warm up. By layering you can start taking things off as it warms up. You might want to look at the distance; if it is too far you might want to ask... is it worth taking the bike? You also want to stay hydrated as this will help keep you warmer. Now how about some FIRST AID and CPR. How many of you are certified in either of these. Do you think you might need to use them at any time in your travels? You never know when you might have to put these skills to the test. GWRRA has training for these at almost every National Convention and the District has them at their District Conventions. They don t take much time and might help you save a life. The RED CROSS also puts them on... just check with the local office. These class s might cost a little but will be well worth the cost. These are just some of the things that GWRRA training can do for you. OCP will give you an insight into what and how a chapter is run. This is important to anyone who is thinking about stepping in to a leadership role in their Chapter. Craig Miller 2

3 Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) MAD Coordinator Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC The Motorist Awareness Division of GWRRA, through a "Share the Road" campaign will pursue three aspects of motorist awareness. Each of these three is supportive of the others: Awareness Education - Providing motorists with First Class, professional education through our certified seminar presentations. Our presentations will be developed for a multitude of audiences, educating them to a better understanding of motorcyclists, the risks involved, a heightened awareness of motorcycle presence and what they as motorists can do in the prevention of crashes. "Drive Aware!" Awareness Advertisement - Serves as a reminder to motorists that they share the road with motorcycles. Reinforced reminder to the education aspect. with the motoring public has the ability to reflect highly on GWRRA and to mold public opinion on how they view motorcyclists. So how can we, as members of Chapter SC-G, support our national objective to educate the motoring public about sharing the road safely with motorcyclists? We, as individuals, we can have conversations with the 4-wheeled population whenever we are on our motorcycles. People are often curious and stop to admire them when we stop for breaks. You can take advantage of those opportunities to help educate them. Hopefully we will ALL be MAD Riders. We Ride Aware, and we need the 4- wheeled population to Drive Aware! 4 November Ride Reports Here are some recent ride reports from our members. Submit info for this page to Chapter G Maintenance Day We had a great maintenance work day. Great turnout, great food, great weather (ok, a little chilly for the 8:00 ride), but it was a great ride home also (even warmer). So, we had 5 motorcycles we did maintenance on, and no catastrophes. Between the air filter, the oil changes, bleeding the brakes and other miscellaneous stuff, it turned out to be a good day. We want to say thanks to our maintenance folks, who helped the team. First of all thanks Bruce for all your assistance and patience. Then we want to thank Ron for hosting us and letting us use his huge garage. We actually had four bikes in the garage at one time, and still had not used one bay. And then we had Mike running around helping where he could. All in all, it was a great day, and we had lot s of onlookers cheering us along, or ribbing us when we needed it. Lot s of fun. The food was great for our pot luck, with chicken, pot roast, all styles of potato, some mashed (or whipped) squash (it was actually pretty good), desserts, and all kinds of food. If anyone left hungry, it was their own fault. Again, many thanks to Ron & Sissy for opening up their home (and garage) and hosting this event. Now, looking ahead, our next maintenance day will be March 21, at Floyd & Kathy s house in West Ashley. Make your plans to attend now, and let s have some more fun. The G-Force (Continued from page 1) Then there was the trip to Key West, where they didn t quite make it. It seems there was a small accident, which put Maryann in the hospital in Fort Lauderdale for several days. But she always wanted to try to go back to Key West, which we tried to do in April, but it didn t quite work out. Then she made several of the mountain trips with Chapter G. It seems she was in love with the mountains, especially in the fall with the turning leaves. And when Guy was busy doing other things, she would run off with someone else and ride with them if they would let her. Like the trip to the Historic Skyline Village Inn & Cavern in Spruce Pine, NC. While Guy was helping others to learn to manuever their trike, she climbed on with Scott and his yellow Gold Wing. Off they went up to Mt. Mitchell. Then when someone suggested we ride to Asheville for hot dogs and again, off she went for the ride. Then there was the trip to Florida for their District Rally. We spent several days enjoying the festivities, riding around the area and enjoying the fun. The day we were scheduled to return, we had some severe storms to move in. So, we delayed one day, waiting for better weather. We thought we had smooth sailing until on the way home, we ran into the sheer winds, with 65 mph winds as we crossed the Jacksonville bridge. Bikes leaned into the wind and across we went, while she sit tight on the back, not even a whimper. For a while, she would even ride the trike by herself, but she always enjoyed being a corider the best. She would slide orange drops or peanut butter crackers to Guy, so he never went hungry on the road. So Maryann, you will be so very missed, but we will always have fond memories. Here s to the Gold Wing ride in the sky. Happy Trails 4

And we thank you for your assistance. Remember, this couple represents our chapter at other events, as they are able to attend. Chapter Life By Karen Miller November has been a very sad month for Chapter SC-G as we said goodbye to Mary Ann Lamb. Her sudden and unexpected passing has left us all with a deep sense of loss. Guy and Mary Ann have been a part of Chapter SC-G for many years. I hope we all rally around Guy as he deals with her tragic loss. Mary Ann bravely stepped up when there was a need for leadership in our chapter. She had a vision for our chapter and was working hard to bring that spark of fun back into the chapter. That is the legacy she leaves us. For now, Mike Melton is leading the chapter until a permanent Chapter Director is appointed. He needs your support as we all work to guide the chapter going forward. There are a number of activities planned, and I hope you all will turn out to support them. - Hanahan Christmas Parade on Dec 6 - Chapter Christmas Party on Dec 6 - Edisto Christmas Parade on Dec 13 - North-South Dinner on Jan 1 -Meet to Eats every other Thursdays -Plaque Attacks on the 4th Saturday of each month (except December). Check the calendar on the chapter web page for a detailed list of events and activities. Check the G-Mails for reminders of upcoming events as well. And finally, if you don t see something you d like to do, contact one of the team members and we ll try to plan it. The most important thing to remember CHAPTER SC-G NEEDS YOU! 5
