Chapter Directors Mike Melton & Anne Sheets P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC Things Past and Future Well, it s June and the weather is getting warmer. It s time to ride. So, in May, that s what we did. Took 20 people on 13 bikes and had a great time in Murphy, NC. We had rides for Friday and Saturday, with some awesome restaurants and stops. We had one member who had never ridden the Dragon, so we took him for that experience (twice), and included the Hell Bender as a bonus. Some folks got some excellent pictures which have been included in this newsletter. We had some bumps in the planning, so the future trips will be planned a little differently. If you have some recommendations, by all means, send them to me. Before I go into that, I would like to thank Karen Miller for putting together the Spring Mountain Trip this year. She coordinated the routes, the place to stay, and helped with the meals, along with some help from the locals and other members. Karen made the effort to put together the ride up, and the great rides we had up there. Thank You Karen. On these rides, it is very difficult to make everyone happy, and all we can do is try. So, to help with the fun factor, it has been suggested we plan rides a little differently, and then let the riders and co-riders decide which ride they want to do! For the Fall and next Spring Mountain Trips, we will plan two (2) rides per day. One will be a slower, casual, sight seeing trip with stops along the way to enjoy the scenery. The second will be a more serious rider s ride, with fewer stops and more aggressive roads. That means we need two ride leaders, which is something we will need to work on. Any volunteers? At least, that is the plan, so give us your feedback, and tell us what it takes to get you to come join the fun. Other things going on. Our next meeting, I will be on the road in Colorado and Arizona, and parts in-between, moving stuff. George will be running the meeting, so give him your support. At our next meeting, we were going to have a Rider Education Seminar, but with me being out of town with short notice to get someone to come in, we will postpone the seminars until the July meeting. And remember, Logan s opens their doors at 11:00, so come on in and place your food order before the 11:30 meeting start time. It will be delivered as we finish. As you all know, we have the SC Rally coming up in July. There will be an ARC & TRC available but you need to sign up when you register, or risk being added to the wait lists when you get onsite. We will also have opportunities to work and help with the running of the rally, so be prepared to offer one or two hours of support,. This is OUR state rally, so let s make it a fun one. And thank you to my team, who help me with so many things. I could not do it without you. I know I probably don t show my appreciation enough. So, a BIG Thank You G-Team! Until next time, ride safe and often, Mike Melton 2

Lake Marion Wildlife Tour Recently, we took a ride to Lake Marion, named after an American Revolutionary War General, and the largest lake in South Carolina. Since the lake is known for its big fish and abundant wildlife, we decided to take one of the eco tours offered in the area. The two-hour scenic swamp tour was on a 40-foot pontoon boat and its captains were USCG certified. The trip was narrated by an experienced naturalist/biologist who told us about the history, culture and ecosystem of the lake and the area. The lake was created with the construction of the Santee dam in Towns like Ferguson were earmarked to be flooded as part of the project. Homes and buildings in good condition were moved, while others were torn down. Cemeteries were also moved. With the threat of war in Europe, the project was ramped up. So rather than clear cutting the land as they did for Lake Moultrie, it was decided to leave some of the trees and only cut the tree tops off others. Therefore, the waterways in the area need to be navigated carefully as the tree stumps are not always visible. Assistant Chapter Directors 2016 Chapter Couple of the Year MJ & John LeBlanc MJ John acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org The Biker s branch to feed. Others would bring the fish to the nest for the female and their young to eat. Just breathtaking! If you decide to visit, be sure to bring your binoculars as well as your camera you will not be disappointed. Other adventures offered include sunrise/sunset tours, historic Pinopolis lock tours and lake dinner cruises (last Saturday of the month). We traveled through flooded forests of cypress trees and were able to get a close up view of the wildlife in the area. We saw turtles, alligators, hawks, eagles, egrets, herons and countless other birds. However, the most interesting birds were the osprey also known as fish eagles. Most were perched in their untidy stick nests atop the tallest trees. These nests are used year after year so some were quite large. We saw males dive into the water, pluck a fish and then bring it to a nearby MJ and John LeBlanc 3

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-2@gwrra-sc-g.org 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit Most of us will certainly recall where we were and what we were doing on September 11, 2001 when the tragic attacks were developing on TV on that infamous day in US history. When we heard that the traveling 9/11 NEVER FORGET EXHIBIT was coming to Charleston, we knew we had to go see it. It turned out to be a beautiful Sunday, so we rode to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant and just as we arrived, Craig and Karen pulled in behind us. We waited together in line for about an hour and finally entered into the 1,100 square foot mobile exhibit. Once inside, two firefighters that survived the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York gave a short but very informative narrative on the events of the day. First with the attack on the North Tower of the World Trade Center, then the South Tower, followed by the Pentagon and finally the downed plane in Somerset County, PA. Heroic efforts of first responders were further explained including a moving story about a young firefighter, Stephen Siller. He had just gotten off the late shift at Squad 1 in Brooklyn, NY. When he heard the news, he returned to get his gear. He drove his own truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel but it was closed. So he strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back and rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic and ran 1.7 miles from the Tunnel to the Towers where he gave up his life while saving others. His life and heroic death reminds us to live life to the fullest and spend our time here on earth doing good. 4 In his memory, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation created this traveling exhibit as a tribute to all who sacrificed on September 11, The memorial provides interactive education, including artifacts, news and video recordings and live tours from FDNY heroes and is committed to ensuring WE NEVER FORGET and that America s youth understand the sacrifices of many on that day. It also honors our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country. The Foundation also builds specially adapted, custom designed Smart Homes to help restore independence and improve the quality of life for our nation s most catastrophically injured service members. You can visit OURBRAVEST.ORG to learn more and make donations if you wish. This may also be a charity our GWRRA Chapter might support in the future. On a personal note, I happened to be in a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn and New Jersey shortly after 9/11 on business. Families that had lost someone in the Twin Towers displayed American flags in front of their homes. In some neighborhoods, hardly a house did not have a flag! That was the hit home moment for me how devastating the day had been. I have since visited Ground Zero on two occasions and we look forward to visiting the new 9/11 Memorial & Museum in the near future. George & Gloria Servant

Rider Education Safety Corner Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Asst. Chapter Educator Mike Melton P.O. Box North Charleston, SC Rider Education Are you in the GWRRA Levels program? Do you know what the levels program is? Did you know that the goal of GWRRA, and chapter SC-G, is to have 100% participation in the levels program. Entry into the levels program is very easy. You simply commit to riding safely ALL THE TIME. That s all. That s called Level 1 Safety by Commitment. If you do that, the chapter will provide you with your Level 1 patch, called the Safe Miles patch. Wouldn t it be great to see EVERYONE with this patch on their vests. Level II, called Safety by Education, is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals. We are fortunate that GWRRA offers rider and co-rider courses. Our South Carolina District now offers both ARC (Advanced Rider Course) and TRC (Trike Rider Course) several times during the year and at our rally. It is WELL worth the time and effort, and even the seasoned riders normally learn something. Level III, called Safety by Preparedness adds first aid or CPR. Just as the rider courses prepare us to ride safely in a variety of situations, knowing first aid and CPR prepares us for an unfortunate 5 situation where we may need to render aid to someone else. Level IV, called Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness requires both first aid AND CPR and current in Level III for one year, and have 25,000 safe miles. Level IV is called Master Tour Rider and is the most prestigious level. While ALL the levels are beneficial to you as a rider, and everyone is encouraged to consider moving up in the levels program, Level I is strongly encouraged among all members. It is also the easiest level to achieve. So if you ARE committed to riding safely, why not show that commitment with pride. If you are not committed to riding safely, in all honesty, I m not sure I would want to ride with you. Would YOU want to ride with someone who would not commit to riding safely? If you don t have your Level I certification, it s simple. Send me an at twowingcircus@att.net and I will get the ball rolling. Or you can let me know at the next chapter gathering. The chapter will take care of the Level I patch, or whatever your entry level patch will be (some folks qualify for Level II or Level III right away). Help us achieve 100 percent participation in Chapter SC-G. In summary, the levels are: Level I Safety by Commitment, Level II Safety by Education, Level III Safety by Preparedness, and Level IV Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness. And remember Safety is for Life! Craig R, Miller

Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Motorist Awareness If you ride a motorcycle, either as the rider or the co-rider, you should be fully invested in Motorist Awareness. Why? Because the more aware automobile drivers are of the mere presence of motorcycles on the roads, the safer YOU will be. The more drivers who are aware of and understand the different hazards motorcyclists experience, the more they will be able to anticipate our actions. They will understand WHY that motorcycle in front of them suddenly shifted position in the lane as they approach that manhole cover that is raised above the road grade. They will understand WHY that motorcycle slowed at a railroad track and crossed at an angle. They will understand WHY that motorcycle is proceeding cautiously through grass, sand, leaves or gravel on the road. BUT! It is OUR responsibility to educate them. That is why our chapter participated in the Car and Bike Show at Ashley River Baptist Church. While the weather looked like it might rain, it turned out to be a beautiful day to be out sharing our passion for motorcycling with the public. Chapter SC-G had a good representation and we all enjoyed interacting with the public. We handed out literature, bumper stickers and cozies. I spoke with a man who just bought a Harley with the goal of riding in the mountains. He was a very new rider, so I suggested he take a riding course. It was also an opportunity to mention to him that our organization is not exclusive to only Gold Wing riders; he was welcome to join us as an 6 associate member. It was also an opportunity for me to mention that an excellent rider course would be available at our rally in July. All it takes folks, is to simply strike up a conversation with a stranger. Remember our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. I am always amazed at how excited and animated folks who don t ride get when I share the joy I get while on a motorcycle. Many never considered as they travel down the road in their air conditioned car that we simply enjoy the experience even in the heat, cold or wet conditions. That opens the door for me to share how important it is that they understand that while we enjoy riding, and our experience is different than theirs, we also have to watch diligently for hazards that would never affect them. I know I ve made a connection with them when I see the expression in their eyes change from interest to surprise. I always end an article with Ride AWARE! The object of Motorist Awareness is to encourage the motoring public to ALSO Drive AWARE! The more we share our experiences with them, the more they WILL be more aware of us. Any conversation you have with the motoring public about motorcycling is a Motorist Awareness activity. All it takes is to be friendly. So I ll end this month with Ride AWARE and be a friend. Ride Safe and Ride Alert! Karen Miller

Hope to see you at one next month. 26th at Ms. Rose s Fine Food in Charleston. We had a great turn out there also with 21 Spring Mountain Trip A great success with 20 people on 13 bikes. We divided up into three groups for riding, and enjoyed ourselves, the rides and the views. Other than the rain on the way up, the rest of the trip was uneventful and beautiful weather. Many thanks to Karen Miller for planning out this trip. Kathy s Craft Night We had an evening of good times to include making clay pot solar lights. Everyone had a blast. Do you have an ideas for craft night? If so, please contact Kathy at mkt321@comcast.net or by her cell phone at Car & Bike Show (MAD Event) We had a good turnout to help with the table we set up for the Ashley River Baptist Church event. We set up a Motorist Awareness table, and an information table, passing out Motorist Awareness information and GWRRA literature. We spoke with several folks, so it was a great turnout. Thanks to all those who came out to support, and thanks to Guy for making arrangements for us to be there. District Plaque Capture The May plaque capture took us to Greenwood, SC to the Ryan s Steak House, at 1703 By Pass 72. We eat at 12pm, and had the meeting at 1pm. We had a small turnout, mostly in cars, due to the rain, but we were represented well by Roger & Shirley. We will send out a G- Mail with the ride meeting location and time, but we would like to have a great turnout for this one. We will even see if we have time for some back country roads. Road Captain Course Mike is looking to offer a Road Captain Course in the near future. With some of the rides we do, and with Wing Ding on the horizon, it would be a great opportunity for everyone to learn. The Road Captain Course is designed for all who want to participate. The person who really wants to be a group leader will benefit the most, but we also encourage co-riders and riders who are not interested in being leaders to take this course. The co-rider can help by pointing at an object in the road so the next bike may be able to avoid that object, or give a hand signal for single file formation, etc. The course total time is 2-3 hours, depending on how many people sign up. At the completion, you will be awarded a completion card and a rocker for your vest. In order to schedule, Mike is requesting the following information. You can send this via at meltong@cfl.rr.com. 1. Day of week you are available. 2. Time of day available 3. How many people attending (rider/co-rider) 4. What type of vehicle you ride (bike, trike, spyder, etc) 9

SPRING MOUNTAIN TRIP 2016 by Karen C. Miller On May 12, 2016, GWRRA Chapter SC-G, Tri- County Wings, headed to the mountains around Murphy, NC for a little mountain riding. The largest group to head up gathered at Cracker Barrel in Orangeburg, SC for a nice ride up on back roads. The last 15 miles were a little dicey with torrential rain and high winds. When we got to our hotel, they had just come up from a power outage and their computers were down. The clerk did an excellent job to get the 10 dripping wet motorcyclists into their rooms to dry off. Fortunately that was the ONLY rain we had the entire weekend. On our first full day of riding the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, we began with a stop at Fields of the Woods. Fields of the Woods is a church retreat for the Church of God. It is such a peaceful setting and we were surrounded by inspirational displays. When we left we followed back roads through the beautiful mountains, small towns and past serene farm land. It started out on the chilly side, but warmed up nicely and turned into a beautiful day. Lined up to leave Fields of the Wood. How appropriate there is a Mayfield Ice Cream truck in the background. Day three of our trip took in the Cherohala Skyway and a beautiful waterfall (Bald River Falls.) We started on the Tennessee side and rode to the North Carolina side then on to lunch. The morning started chilly, but warmed up nicely. The higher elevations on the skyway offered beautiful views of the mountains and valleys as well as much lower temps. I particularly enjoyed the beautiful streams we passed. The skies at times look ominous, but we never had rain. We broke into three groups based on riding preference so everyone could enjoy the ride the way they liked. The next morning we headed for home in VERY chilly 40 degree weather. The camera stayed in the bag for the return trip. 11
