2 Chapter Directors (Pending Paperwork) Kevin and Becky Thornton From our New Chapter Directors Greetings, We hope everyone had a great February. The chapter started off attending a great Super Bowl party. We greatly appreciate MJ and John for hosting the party. There was a lot of great food and socializing. Not sure how many people were there but the house was packed. Hope your team won. Next we would like to thank Karen and Craig for inviting the chapter to their Church s Valentine banquet. At our February Gathering, we discussed the upcoming trip to Kentucky. Updates will be given at the March Gathering. We also discussed the spring District Rally. We need help in designing and making a shield. Anita says that she can get it there in time for the judging. Please let Craig know of any rides that you would like to take in the upcoming months. Also, please let Becky or me know of anything that you would like to see done in the chapter. Until the next one. Ride Safe, Ride Often, Ride Free. 3 Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org Australia, here we come! For as long as I can remember, Australia has been on our bucket list. Two years ago we booked a cruise to New Zealand and Australia to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Made all the necessary arrangements: flights, hotels, transfers, tours, excursions, dog sitter, etc., months in advance and the day finally arrived. We left Charleston at 6 AM on January14 and flew to Houston. After an 11 hour layover in Houston and a 15 hour flight, we landed in Auckland, New Zealand at 5:30 AM on January 16. Having crossed the International Dateline over the Pacific Ocean we lost January 15 altogether. But no worries, we ll gain a day coming back. Very weird! So we hit the ground running. We dropped off our luggage at the hotel and took a ferry to Devonport. Checked out some shops, and hiked up Mt. Victoria to take in some fantastic views of Auckland across the bay. Gloria found a quilt store, purchased unique New Zealand fabric, followed by some Fish n Chips in a local restaurant, for which the area is famous for. The next day, we had arranged for a private tour of Auckland. We experienced the culture, history, landmarks, gardens and scenery that make Auckland the great city that it is. We visited the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, the world s only Pacific Gothic style church, taking in spectacular stained glass windows and an amazing organ with over 1,000 pipes. Then we travelled along Paratei Drive and the clifftop suburb of Orakei, one of the most expensive suburbs in the Auckland area, with homes going for a few million dollars. After two eventful days in Auckland, we were ready to board the Celebrity Solstice. This is the fourth time we have been on this beautiful ship, so it s beginning to feel a bit like home. (Continued on page 4) 3

4 After the mandatory life boat drill, we had a nice dinner, attended a Sail Away Party and finally settled in for a good night s sleep. Next morning we arrived in the Bay of Islands, an inlet at the northeastern coast of the North Island. We took the ship s tender to Waitangi Wharf, walked around the lovely port village of Paihia and took a bus to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. There we took a tour of the grounds with a native guide and learned a great deal about how New Zealand was settled by the Maori and later discovered by the English and the French. The famous Treaty of Waitangi, which gave the Maori certain rights under the British Empire, has never been ratified. New Zealand is actually a very young country on the world stage, only about 180 years since becoming a colony. The next day, we sailed into Tauranga, where we had arranged another private tour (with two other couples). We drove out in the countryside for over an hour, past rolling hills and sheep, sheep and more sheep to the sleepy town of Matamata. (New Zealand is home to about 60 million sheep.) We visited the world s largest outdoor movie set in Hobbiton, a 1,250 acre sheep farm where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were filmed. The bucolic setting for The Shire, home of the Hobbits, including Bag End was there. We strolled around the grounds and took in all 39 Hobbit Holes admiring the great detail that they took in creating the entire site; homes, gardens, even laundry hanging out to dry. You could just imagine Bilbo Baggins sitting on a nearby bench along the path, jumping over a fence or sitting under the great oak tree. For true J.R.R Tolkien fans and the related movies, this is a must see experience. The tour ended with a nice cold beer! 4

5 On to Wellington and a full day of how the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit and dozens of other movies were actually made in the real Middle Earth New Zealand. We toured the META Studios in Miramar where the magic of movies is created. We spent several hours with a guide who played Bombur the Hobbit movies, but he looked a lot more like Hagrid of Harry Potter fame. He took us to several sites where some of the movie shots were filmed, before the studios added their special effects. Another great day in New Zealand! Next day we arrived in Picton. Our excursion this day started with hopping aboard a historic Memorial steam locomotive. The Passchendaele train was built in 1915 and was named after the famous Battle of Passchendaele consisting of WWI era carriages. We departed from the Picton Railway Station and chugged through the Marlborough wine country and enjoyed breathtaking views to the town of Blenheim. There we walked along the river in the park and found a French gourmet restaurant that featured the famous local green lip mussels in wine sauce, shrimp salad and real French Fries. YUM! 6 District Rider Educator Rich Kitco 6 Ernie Court Irmo, SC Capn_rich_1@yahoo.com Intersections Intersections are some of the most dangerous places for motorcyclists. Be it a multi lane, two lane, one lane or just a driveway. We need to take extra precautions when approaching or moving through any intersection. The worst is a vehicle turning left in front of a motorcycle, but any highway junction can be dangerous as with a vehicle pulling out of a blind driveway or a mall entrance. A few strategies to make riding safer; Watch the front tire, not the drivers face. This takes some practice but the front tire is more of an indication of movement. Is the driver looking at you or past you! Lane position, move the cycle around in your lane to get the best view of driveways and approaching cars, and also to be seen better. Always approach intersections with caution and expect the unexpected. Adjust speed and cover the brake and clutch. When stopped at intersections do not pull too closely to a vehicle in front of you, give yourself an out and watch those mirrors for anything approaching. Richard Kitko, SC Senior District Educator Ok the weather will be getting better soon and we need to check our BIKES and make sure they are safe to ride. Some things to look at are tires, brakes, oil, brake fluid and our riding gear. There will be a Chapter Maintenance day in March. If you have something you want to do make sure you have the parts to do it, there will be folks to show you how to do it but you will have to do the work. Some jobs are complicated and will take all day so give yourself the time to do what you are planning. If you have not looked at taking a Rider Ed course, you might want to talk to Kevin Thornton about any upcoming courses being offered. We all need to brush up on our riding skills as we have been off our bikes for a couple months and need to practice some of the skills we have forgotten over the winter. If you think you have picked any bad habits over the many years that you have been riding that are not good for your survival when you are out on the road you would be correct. We all have things that we do that are not the way we should do them when we ride. We need to look at them and change the bad habits we have picked up over the years. If you have a co-rider, you owe it to them to be the best you can be. They have no control over what you do other than not getting on the bike. DO YOU WANT THAT? Submitted by Craig Miller, Chapter Ride Coordinator 6

7 Recipe of the Month Baked Salami Mozzarella Bites These baked salami mozzarella bites are a super easy and tasty appetizer, perfect for game day! Ingredients: 8 sticks mozzarella string cheese, cut in half, lengthwise, and then cut in half again, crosswise 32 square won ton wrappers 32 salami rounds olive oil For serving: chopped fresh parsley, for garnish pizza, marinara, or spaghetti sauce, for dipping Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Place a piece of salami near the bottom corner of the won ton wrapper, then lay a piece of string cheese on top of that. Wrap tightly like a burrito, by folding the bottom corner over cheese, rolling one turn, folding sides in, and continue to roll (making sure the cheese is secure to prevent leaking.) Moisten remaining corner with water to seal. 3. Repeat process with all the won ton wrappers; place on the baking sheet and brush lightly with olive oil. 4. Bake for minutes until golden; turn and bake for another 5 minutes. Let cool for a couple minutes. 5. Serve with dipping sauce of your choosing and enjoy! Submitted by Anita Fender Trivia 1.
