Chapter Directors 2018 Chapter Couple of the Year Mike Melton & Anne Sheets P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC For the benefit of those who did not make the last Chapter Gathering, and for those who could not believe what they heard, yes we had an announcement we had to make with a heavy heart. Anne Sheets has accepted a new job in Arizona. The last Chapter Gathering was her last one she will be here to attend. She will actually depart on October 28th. And yes, this is a little sudden. She had interviewed for the job earlier this year, but there was red tape and other things that delayed the final offer, but it came a few weeks ago. This will be a good move for Anne, as her son, daughter-in-law, grandson and best friend for 32 years all live within a few miles of where she will be moving to. We wish her well, and we hope all goes well in her move. That said, it looks like I will be moving to Arizona also. Not sure I can explain why, other than my best friend will be there, so it seems like the right thing to do. But, as fate would have it, my departure will be delayed until sometime in March probably. I have several commitments I would not want to miss through February, so it will be at least 1 March before I leave the area. And now, what that means, effective 1 January, I plan to step down at the SC-G Chapter Director. No, this is not what I want, but it would be real hard to run a chapter in SC from AZ. And besides, you are probably ready for a refreshing change in mug shots on this page. All jokes aside, this has been a difficult decision to make, and I will miss all my Gold Wing friends and family here in the Charleston Area. That means, we need a new Chapter Director to step up before 1 January. Making the transition then helps keep the paperwork in order. Since we have to file our tax return for the chapter, it closes the report on 31 December. If a new Chapter Director takes over on 1 January, it eliminates the need to do two IRS reports in the same year. And, I will be around and active until March, and it would be an honor to mentor someone new, show them the ropes, and be of assistance to them. So, who do you think would make a good Chapter Director? I would welcome your suggestions, along with Buddy who will have to interview the new potential candidate. If someone doesn t step up, the chapter can t continue. Two positions are required for a chapter to operate the Chapter Director and Chapter Treasurer. Without both, the District will have no option but to close the chapter, and we all know, we don t want that to happen. So, if you would like to grasp at an opportunity, to take our chapter to the next level, feel free to call me, or Buddy Summer (District Director) and we would be more than willing to answer any questions you may have. It is important, and it can be fun. The good news is, the existing team has offered to stay on board, if the new Chapter Director chooses to keep them. So, it could be a win/win situation for all. We have several events scheduled for November and December, so be sure to check out our calendar starting on page 11, and keep up with any changes on our online calendar at calendar/index.html Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful, Mike Melton From your Chapter Directors 2

From your Chapter Director (Continued) Tips/Reminders From the Road Captain Course We had several folks to take the Road Captain Course earlier this year. Not everyone had the opportunity, but those who did, learned a lot. There is also a seminar called the Team Riding course, which also is a very good introduction to how to make a group ride enjoyable and safe. So I thought a few tips would be good to remind folks, or to educate those who have not had the pleasure of the courses. One of the things that I forget to check often, is the squelch on my CB. When I m riding by myself, I tend to turn it up, to reduce the chatter and noise. But when I get in a group, I have to remember to turn it back down as much as possible. So, why is this important? Well, first of all, let s understand what is going on when you turn the squelch up. As you turn the squelch up, it reduces the range and signal level it takes for the CB to break squelch. That s what happens when someone talks on the CB under normal circumstances. But, with the squelch up, you may not be able to hear folks as close as a half a mile from you. If you can t hear, you can t communicate with them. So a key to keep in mind, keep the squelch as low as you can, without having to deal with all the white noise that will come across if you turn it down too low. I normally turn it up till the noise goes away, and then go up one or two more settings as a safety, since signal levels can change for many reasons. Another thing that can cause concern is distance between bikes/trikes. As a rule of thumb, in all the riding courses, we teach to be two seconds behind the bike in front of you. Now, if you are riding in group and staggered, that still means the bike in the same track you are riding. The bike riding in the other track may only be one second ahead of you, so it is important that if there is an emergency situation, you need to stay in your track. (See the next paragraph for an explanation of tracks.) Now, you often hear, ride your own ride. And that s true, but if you choose to keep 3-4 seconds behind the bike in front of you, then you are adding enough room for cars to squeeze in, or for others to be concerned that maybe they are going too fast for you. Staying within the 2-3 second rule, keeps the bikes close enough, to be seen as a group. Now, what does it mean to ride in a staggered formation, and what does the term track mean. Simply, if you take a lane, and divide it into 3 tracks (or places where the wheels on the bike/trike will ride in). There will be a left track (if in the far right lane, close to the lane separation markers), there will be a center track, and then there will be the right track (next to the shoulder). Bikes tend to run in the left and right tracks, which then creates a staggered formation for the bikes. This allows you to keep the formation tight, but with a safe distance. If there are trikes, they tend to run left or right track, but they will also have a wheel in the center track. Anyone behind the trike needs to be two seconds behind that vehicle, because there is a part of the trike that is in the same track as your bike/ trike. So, here s hoping you found something interesting, helpful, and able to help you enjoy and/or improve on your riding habits. Dress for the slide, not the ride, Mike Melton 3

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org Do you know who this is? This is the fourth in a continuing series of articles featuring our Chapter members. We ride with them, enjoy meals with them and associate with fellow GWRRA members, but do we really know them? Who are they really? Where do they come from? What are their life experiences? Join us in getting to know them a bit better, maybe for the first time :-) 4

If you guessed Craig Miller, you would be correct! Craig Miller was born and raised in Columbus Ohio with two sisters. His Mom was a stay at home Mom and his Dad served in the Army during World War II on General Eisenhower s staff later in newspaper advertising and an avid boater, spending lots of time on lakes on weekends and vacations. Must have been where Craig first thought about joining the Navy. Craig remembers growing up as a quiet guy, and an average student in a small school with only 59 students in his class. Nothing important stands out in his mind as a teenager, but he did confess to cutting down the City Mayor s Christmas tree for no special reason, just for fun. He joined the Navy Reserves at 16 and went on Active duty when he turned 17, serving for 4 years and seeing action in Vietnam. Upon returning home, married, and rode with the One Percenters Motorcycle Club. Later he and his wife separated and divorced. Craig cleaned up and re-enlisted in the Navy and served for an additional 21 years. He was assigned to Supply in the Ship s Store, and among other assignments in Support Services, was responsible for the ship s Laundry. He also drove Landing Crafts, participating in 57 amphibious assault landings in Vietnam. He served on LSDs, Sub Tenders, Destroyers and Frigates, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. In 1974 while stationed in Cape Hatteras, NC and she in Washington, DC, he met Karen Creed in Annapolis, Maryland. She was in the Navy Reserves for 6 years. They dated, wed and have been married for 43 years. Craig says they have three children, one mine, one hers and one together. After a total of 25 years, he retired with the rank of E-6 as a Petty Officer First Class. Back in civilian life, Craig worked in the grocery business with Food Lion and Piggly Wiggly for 5-6 years. Then went on to manage Convenience Stores for another 10 years. He worked in Car Sales for an additional 5 years and is now retired, although he can still be found driving by doing dealer trades for a few local car dealers. He unapologetically admits that his only hobby is motorcycling and has been just about all his life. Craig clearly recalls his first motorcycle. It was a 1939 Whizzer, which he bought for $100 at the ripe old age of 9 years. It was basically a 5 Horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine bolted onto a bicycle with a strap going to the rear wheel. He used it to deliver newspapers on his route for 6 years and had to replace the rear brakes every Saturday. It had a top end of 49 miles per hour. He probably holds a record for having owned and sold a total of 46 bikes in his lifetime. He would typically buy a new bike in the Spring and sell it in the Fall every year. He has always had a motorcycle in his garage, and has owned just about every brand except Moto Guzzi at one time or another. Around 1983, he and Karen bought their first Honda Silver Wings. He had a cc, she had a cc. In 1999, he bought a 77 GL1000 for $300 and after they went on an all (SC) county ride, Karen decided they needed to upgrade! So next came a 93 GL 1500 for Craig, and a 98 GL 1500 for Karen. In 2003, they got a pair of orange bikes, one of which was a trike. Finally, they own their 2008 trike that will likely be their last. 5

(Continued from page 5) In February 2019, Craig and Karen will have been GWRRA Members for 20 years. He has been Assistant Chapter Director, Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Rider Educator and Ride Co-Ordinator at Chapter Level and MEC at District Level under three District Directors. Together, they were Chapter Couple of the Year in Craig talks about participating in the 40 to Phoenix Ride as a most memorable experience and recalls attending many rallies and Chapter events over the years and having so much fun and making great friends along the way. Seems like they both liked to dress up and compete in Best Dressed Competitions too. Apparently, Crazy Pants was a real thing. Also, they took First Place in Custom Class with their black 93 GL 1500 Wing. They did a good bit of camping to rallies with their tow behind camping trailers. (1 Time Out and 1 Windward). What s next for Craig? Riding his trike as often as possible and his Lil Red Scooter as needed and taking things One Day at a Time. So now you know the rest of the story. Say hello to Craig (and Karen) Miller next time you meet them, for the first time. Submitted by George and Gloria Servant 6

District Rider Educator Rich Kitco 6 Ernie Court Irmo, SC Capn_rich_1@yahoo.com Fall Pitfall Fall riding, finally cooled off and the weather is more comfortable. The cool clear days can have a dangerous side also. This time of year the sun makes a trip to the southern hemisphere and the morning and evening sun can blind you. Since the sun is lower in the sky, it tends to blind drivers at about the busiest times of day when commuters are coming and going to work. Whether driving 4 wheels, 3 wheels or 2 wheels, be aware of the fact that you may be blinded at any time when traveling toward the sun. Since my work commute luckily goes away from the sun I have a few observations. Be aware that you may be blinded at any time. Have sun shades ready to use. Hold up a hand to block the sun s rays. Be ready if traffic stops as brake lights are hard to see when blinded. If on a motorcycle, be aware of traffic behind you being blinded and not being able to see a stopped motorcycle. With todays distracted drivers, it is especially dangerous when one gets blinded suddenly and makes a wrong move. Winter driving requires us to be on guard for many dangers. Motor along knowing that conditions can change quickly. Richard Kitko, South Carolina District Educator What Happened Last Month in Chapter SC-G? So, here is a review of what happened last month, if I can keep focused. So, we started off the month with our Chapter Gathering at Logans. We had 35 people, with ten of those were visitors from out of town, so it turned out to be a good gathering. We had two healthy 50/25/25 drawings, with some folks very happy. Then, on Sunday, we took a trip up to the Santee Locks. Great tour, with lot s of historical information, and a beautiful view from inside the locks. Then we had our first Meet to Eat for the month, at Ye Ole Fashioned. Great food, and for those who had already eaten, great ice cream. Great turnout with 15 people. The following Saturday, we took a ride up to Pearl Fryer s Topiary Gardens in Bishopville. What an amazing place, and what a story behind it. And then, he is so proud because his neighbors have started their own gardens. Our last Meet to Eat was at St. James Place. Another great turnout with 17 people showing up to help see Anne off. Then, on Saturday, we had a great turnout at the District Picnic with 19 people in attendance from Chapter G. And, many of them got to say their last farewell to Anne, who is moving to Arizona for a job there, so we wish her well. So, here s hoping we see you at some of our November activities. 12 Last year, Chapter G made a $400 donation to One80 Place in Charleston to benefit homeless Veterans. This year we have accepted donations, held another Scavenger Hunt/Ride Fundraiser and raffled off 10 baskets and a framed picture at our October Gathering. Our goal for 2018 was to raise at least $500. We have just surpassed our goal and still have three beautiful quilts to raffle off at our December Gathering/Christmas Party. A - 38x50 Red, White & Blue Lap Quilt B - 68x68 Patriotic Themed Quilt C - 32x32 Wall Hanging/ Doll Quilt Three separate drawings will be held at the Chapter Christmas Party on December 2nd. Need not be present to win. All money raised goes to One80 Place. If you just want to donate some money and need a receipt for tax purposes, you are welcome to write out a check to One80 Place and give it to Gloria or Anita and you will be provided with a receipt. Your generous donation will be added to the funds we have collected and presented to One80 Place after the Christmas Party. We thank you in advance for all you can do! $.93 of every dollar you donate goes to funding services, and when your dollars go to work, they help nearly 1,000 individuals return to housing annually and about 90% will stay housed, even after two years. 12

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Mistaken Identities A cabbie picks up a Nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won t stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. He replies, I have a question to ask, but I don t want to offend you. She answers, My son, you cannot offend me. When you re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I m sure that there s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive. Well, I ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me he says. She responds. Well, let s see what we can do about that 1) You have to be single and 2) You must be a Catholic. The cab driver is very excited and says, Yes, I m single and Catholic! OK the nun says. Pull into the next alley. The nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush. But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. My dear child, said the nun, why are you crying? Forgive me, but I ve sinned. I lied and I must confess. I m married and I m Jewish The nun says, That s OK. My name is Kevin and I m on my way to a Halloween party! A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tail gaiting woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger-printed, photographed and placed into a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, I m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the Choose Life license plate holder, the What Would Jesus Do bumper sticker, the Follow Me to Sunday-School bumper sticker, and the chrome plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car. 13

The temperature can drop quickly, so don t get caught out on the road without some layers to put on just in case. Also, when you see hunters and their trucks on the side of the road, keep an eye open for deer. And with dogs chasing them, they may not look before crossing, which could prove fatal to you.
