Guy and I went to the Scottish Games at Boone Hall and found out we are both Scottish and Irish. I ve been doing family history on my dad s side of the family and can trace them here before the Mayflower. How? They came over as slaves for passage to The New World. We had a wonderful time listening to the Scottish lilt or brogue. The whole day was fantastic. The weather was perfect for a ride a little cloudy and about 75 degrees. Guy got to hear the bands play popular Scottish songs and I chose to watch the bagpipe groups compete. The drummers were the best to watch because when not drumming, they were twirling their drumsticks which were covered in pink or white fabric. Of course you had to have vendors and food trucks. I can say without a doubt the food was awful tasting, so I threw that away and got a corn dog instead. Chapter G captured the plaque in Newberry on 27 September. We had seven bikes and nine riders. Go G team. I was in the ER with my mom, again and Guy wasn t feeling well, but our ACD, Mike, lead the group to victory. We will put the plaque up for capture at Ryan s in Summerville on the 25th of October. Does anyone know of a festival being held that day that we can ride to after the meeting? We would like to ride with some of the GWRRA members from around the state. If you have a destination in mind, please call me ( ). Our first meeting to be held at Ryan s is on October 4. This is the Ryan s on Main Street in Summerville. We are looking forward to at least one meeting in the new facility before we overwhelm the wait staff. We will have to be patient, but quick with the meeting. Kickstands up as close to 0830 as possible. The restaurant opens at 0800, so try to be on time. This is the District Picnic and we are asked to bring a side dish or desert and your NEXT CHAPTER GATHERINGS membership card. NO MEMBERSHIP CARD, Saturdays, Oct 4 TH - November 1 TH

Chapter Director Mary Ann & Guy Lamb (Cont) you get to pay $5.00 for food. Guests will also be charged $5.00 to eat. This will help to cover the cost of the food and supplies. Our Christmas party will be held at Logan s Roadhouse in Azalea Square on Dec 6th from 2 until about 5. Each person is asked to bring one Christmas ornament this year, and we ll exchange in a different kind of way than we usually do. Please bring an ornament in the price range of $12-$15. That means you will have to put some thought into it because you may end up with your own gift. If you don t like your ornament, after the meal you can exchange with someone who does like it. The meal will be $17 per person which includes tip and beverage. Drinks are on you. Thanks to Anita Hull for suggesting Logan's. The next meet to eat will be at East Bay Deli West of the Ashley. We will meet at the North Charleston coliseum under the E2 sign post (just off Montague Ave). If you have somewhere you would like to see us meet and eat, let us know. We want to visit different parts of the city and share your favorite foods, also. Well, I ve run out of space, so stay safe, and ride even safer. Mary Ann & Guy Lamb Couple of the Year Selection We are currently looking for nominations for our next couple of the year. Your inputs would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to nominate a couple, please contact Mary Ann at or by at director@gwrra-scg.org Anyone nominated will be considered at our next officers meeting. We need to make this selection by early December, so we can announce the winners in January. So put your thinking camp on, and let s get our next couple of the year selected early. And we thank you for your assistance. Remember, this couple represents our chapter at other events, as they are able to attend. 3 Assistant Chapter Director P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC As we start to settle into our positions, and as winter starts to come along, it seems that both can be depressing. So let me see if I can keep this more upbeat than last month. I am still fairly new to GWRRA. I ve never been very big on membership in organizations, especially those who want you to do stuff for others. I m sure I m not alone with this thought. Why should I worry about a bunch of others, when I can just go out and ride and enjoy myself. Then I think back on my many experiences with this organization. Please bare with me as I reflect. I remember talking with Joe Cooper at another meeting one Friday night and he said I should come out and see what the GWRRA had to offer. I had already signed up with GWRRA because of a pamphlet I was given by a maintenance guy at Velocity Powersports, back when they were in Summerville, but I still did not really understand what GWRRA meant, or what it was all about. So, I finally showed up at the C & W on Rivers for my first meeting. What a welcome it was as Joe introduced me to everyone. Everyone was warm and friendly and I kind of enjoyed it, but that didn t mean a lot to me at first. But as the weeks and months went by I found a real liking in the group, and it slowly started to become like a family group. I liked what they stood for, what they did, the way they did it, and what they didn t do as well. As time went on, I was asked to come out and ride with the Tri-County Drill Team. Now, I didn t really think I was good enough to be on a drill team, but I went out to see just what this was all about. They took me through the paces a little bit, and everyone on the team seemed to think I had potential (meaning I had a long ways to go, but they thought I could get there), so soon I was off on a new journey. What I learned from this experience drove me to be a much better rider than I could have ever dreamed, and then challenged me to become even a better rider, and to help others. And I continue to strive to be a better rider every day I climb on that machine. Now I have become an Advance Rider Course (ARC) Instructor which was its own challenge. I enjoy teaching and educating others, and I look forward to being able to share what I do know. But that means I still have to learn from all of you out there, with your many stories some funny, and some not. But that is what helps me to be a better rider and educator. So, as I continue to learn what it is to be an ACD, I continue to learn what it is to serve and listen to you. We get better as a group when you share your ideas, likes, dislikes, and comments. You are what makes up this organization. You are the reason I joined to begin with. Can we get the Drill Team back up and running I hope so. So many people can learn how much better a rider they can become if they will just give it a try. Everyone does not have to be at the same level to be a good drill team, they just have to practice together and work within their skill limits. The same is true everyday you go out on the highway, whether on 2, 3 or 4 wheels. Every day, we can learn something new. So, as we continue to make plans for rides, activities, and other events, just remember, we will continue to do some of the old stuff while we come up with the new stuff that works for the group and the group is interested in supporting. And that takes you letting us know what you like, what you don t like, and what you might be interested in. That is how I can serve the chapter by listening to you. So please let me have it! So, until next time, ride safe and often, 3

Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC SAFETY Asst. Chapter Educator P.O. Box North Charleston, SC There are some things that we need to wear when we are riding that will keep you safe. 1. Helmet 2. Gloves 3. Long sleeve shirt 4. Long pants 5. Over the ankle footwear or boots 6. Jacket with reflective material to be seen better at night 7. Any hi-visibility clothing that makes you stand out Now think about what would happen to you if you were in a collision with an Automobile and did not have any of these on. This could be a very bad day. We need to wear all the gear all the time and we need to require any one on the back seat to do the same because they are our responsibility. We have control of our safety and must do everything in our power to keep everyone safe. Helmets must be DOT approved. Don t wear one that does not have the DOT sticker on it. Gloves should be full finger and Leather is the preferred material. Long sleeve shirt or jacket to keep sun off of arms and give some protection from Road Rash. A jacket with ARMORE is recommend as they will help protect you in the event you slide down the road. Long pants will save you in the same way. You can find ridding pants with ARMORE also. Boots will protect your feet. Jackets or clothing with reflective materials will help you be seen at night. So remember WATGATT (WEAR ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME). It might not save you but it gives you a chance. Craig Miller Hey folks. Just a short note from me in this area. National has released a revision to the Advanced Rider Course (ARC) and I m in the process of looking at the changes. As soon as I can get a grasp on it, I will be wanting to put on a course here in the Charleston Area. If someone is aware of a large parking lot, where I might be able to conduct the parking lot exercises, I would appreciate letting me know. I need a rather large parking lot with only minimum lamp posts and drains. They can not be on the course itself. Also, anyone who is interested in taking the course, should drop me a line. I can be reached at meltong@cfl.rr.com. This will be a 2-up course when I teach, so anyone who had a co-rider who would like to participate, can also. More to come on all of this. 4

Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) MAD Coordinator Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Greetings, Chapter SC-G! I am honored to serve as Chapter G s MAD coordinator! This is a new function for Chapter G, but it is an important component for GWRRA s Rider Education program. As members of GWRRA, we are all focused on riding safely as we enjoy our beautiful motorcycles. But that is only HALF of the issue. We can be the safest rider on the road, but if the rest of the motoring public is not just as focused, we are in jeopardy of being involved in an unfortunate accident. GWRRA realized that all too often motorcycle crashes were the result of a driver in a car whose actions did not consider the unique conditions a motorcyclist encounters or he/she didn t even see the motorcyclist. So the Motorist Awareness Division was developed to address the problem. The mission of the Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) is to educate the general motoring public of how THEY can impact OUR ride positively or negatively. There are several ways we can do that: 1. Anytime you are out on a ride, engage the public in a conversation about our safety and their safety. Carry MAD literature to give them. 2. Plan special events that are designed to interact with the motoring public to educate them on sharing the road. These can be at a shopping mall, a rest area on the interstate, at car shows or ride-ins. Third Thursday events in Summerville, where they have small car shows, would be a perfect opportunity. Besides Third Thursday Sumerville is a fun event! 3. Present Motorist Awareness seminars to civic and church organizations. GWRRA has LOTS of resources for us to use. All of us are involved in activities outside of GWRRA. These are perfect venues to get the Share the Road message out to the general motoring public. I am in the process of getting literature and resources that we can use. I would like to see one MAD event of some sort every month. That gives us twelve opportunities to make a difference. But I can t do it myself. I need EVERYONE s support and participation. If Chapter G plans an event, we need as many folks from the chapter as possible to support it. If we are going to visit a civic or church group, I would prefer that three or four chapter members attend in chapter shirt and vest if possible. It would speak volumes if we arrive on our bikes too. If you are aware of an opportunity where we can make our presence known, let me know and I will see what I can do to pull something together. In order for us to have success, we all need to be involved. Can I count on you? And while we re at it, let s have fun doing it. Karen Miller 5

August Ride Reports Here are some recent ride reports from our members. Submit info for this page to Plaque Capture Well, we done it. Chapter G rode and captured the plaque on Saturday, 27 September. It was a very nice ride up to Newberry, and because of the games in Columbia, we wanted to avoid the interstate. So we did a nice ride up Hwy 176, and then crossed over on Hwy 6, and rode back roads all the way to Newberry. Got to visit Prosperity, SC, and a few other small towns, and even made a couple of stops. So, we arrived with plenty of time at the San Jose Restaurant, where Chapter S was hosting the capture. The food was good, and the service was great. We had just over 31 participants with 8 c h a p t e r s represented, so we did well. I think the low turnout was because of the NC Rally and the games (both SCU and Clemson had games). So we had 7 bikes with 9 riders and really had a great ride up there. On the way back, some wanted to take their chances and hit the interstate to zoom back, while a few of us took to the back roads again,. We even stopped for ice cream at some little road side stop and still managed to get home around 5pm. We only saw a little drizzle for most of us, so it was really a great ride. So this means, we will put the plaque back up for capture on 25 October, at the Ryan s in Summerville. We hope to have a great turnout, so plan to come out, have a great lunch, and support the chapter with this event. And, Mary Ann is looking for an event somewhere in the close area, we can put out to the others, that they may want to attend while they are here. Some kind of festival, show, or something that you may think is interesting. So if you know of something, please contact your Chapter Director, Mary Ann at or by at director@gwrra-sc-g.org.. October Fall Mountain Trip October 9-12/13 We have most of the arrangements for the Fall Mountain Trip complete. We will be going to the Galax, VA area again (just north of Mount Airy, NC) and riding some of the roads around Wytheville, VA. There is some very nice riding and good roads in these mountains, and we should have lot's of photo ops and good riding. Rooms are available at the Hampton Inn, in Galax, VA, from Thursday night through Monday morning. Some folks may be able to stay till Monday because it is a Federal Holiday (Columbus Day). For those who can t, then they merely tell the hotel either when switching the reservation to their name or when checking in, and they will correct the check out date. We will depart the Charleston area on Thursday morning, and return Sunday or Monday. Dates are Oct 9-12/13. Currently, there are 10 rooms reserved under my name. People need to call the hotel, and mention the reservation in my name, and give a credit card for their room. They can do that now. Hotel Info: Phone number to call: Mention: Group Reservation for GWRRA group under the name of. Hampton Inn Galax Rate: $99/night plus tax. Includes breakfast. Room: 4 Double Rooms and 6 Queen bed rooms are reserved/non Smoking. Dates: 9-12 (checkout on 13th unless you have to leave Sunday, then 12th ) Anyone who calls and transfers a reservation, please call, so he can keep track of the number of rooms. If we need more, we can get more for the same rate. At some point, the reservations will be cut off to avoid any potential charges. So please Mike at meltong@cfl.rr.com or call (or text) at when a reservation is made. 6

August Ride Reports (Cont) Here are some recent ride reports from our members. Submit info for this page to Region A Rally/Vention, September 11-13, 2014 Craig and I had the opportunity to attend the Region A Rally/Vention in beautiful Eufaula, Alabama and had a GREAT time. So why would I want to go to a Region A rally you ask? Well let me try to describe our experience. First, you need to make up your mind that the only thing you hope to get out of it is e n j o y m e n t. A n y o t h e r expectation may let you down. The seminar you wanted may not be offered; but there are other seminars you can attend. The vendor you wanted to visit may not be there, but there are other vendors you can visit. In fact, Craig and I found a new vendor and were able to purchase safety vests for riding that are cool and comfortable. Second, go with a group and plan an enjoyable ride to your destination. Craig and I met up with several folks from South Carolina and rode back roads through beautiful Georgia countryside to Eufaula. We had eight trikes, a truck and 16 people. We enjoyed riding through areas we don t see everyday and just enjoyed riding with each other. Third, participate in the activities that are planned. Some of them are just as fun to simply observe. On day One this year there was a moving tribute to America and 9/11 following a delicious dinner and before the costume contest. It was a perfect way to kick off the rally. On Day Two there was the COY reception, where we got to meet all the District COYs. One of them would represent all of us in Region A at Wing Ding in Huntsville, Alabama in September, All five of them were awesome! The VERY funny talent show brought down the h o u s e a n d S o u t h Carolina s very own Chapter S took first place in group comedy. The day ended with an escorted lighted bike parade through Eufaula to Sonics where we could enjoy h a l f - p r i c e d m i l k shakes. Day Three included a very nice ride to Dairy Queen in Dothan, Alabama for the Order of the Red Spoon. What G W R R A member wouldn t want to ride to a Dairy Queen for ice cream? While you re at it, let s have some silly fun. We had 60 folks at this event. Dairy Queen did a WONDEREFUL job handling all the whacky silliness. The event ended with closing ceremonies where prizes and MONEY was awarded. We didn t win any though. W e h o n o r e d o u r v e t e r a n s a n d emergency responders and our new Region A COY was introduced. Finally, there was the ride home, and there were lots of flexibility in how you go. Next year the rally will be at the same beautiful location on the last weekend in October. I hope you all start making your plans to go so Chapter G is well represented. Karen Miller 7

Tid Bits of Information Here are some other news items you may find of interest. Submit info for this page to INITIAL SAFETY RECALL NOTICE GL1800 Motorcycles September 8, 2014 September 2014 NHTSA Recall 14V-472 IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE Dear GL1800 Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. What is the reason for this notice? Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in model year GL1800 motorcycles. The secondary master cylinder repair conducted in 2011, pursuant to NHTSA recall 11V-567, was not sufficient enough in preventing the rear brake from dragging. Under certain conditions there is still a possibility that the combined braking system s secondary master cylinder may cause the rear brake to drag. Unexpected braking increases the risk of a crash and riding the motorcycle with the rear brake dragging may generate enough heat to cause the rear brake to catch fire. What should you do? You can continue to ride your motorcycle if you carefully inspect it before and after each ride. Please read and follow the accompanying instructions regarding steps you can take to inspect your motorcycle for this issue. A permanent repair remedy is not yet available and Honda will send you another letter when a permanent repair becomes available. If you suspect that your rear brake is dragging, contact your Honda Motorcycle dealer to set an appointment for an inspection, free of charge. For more information, you can go to the following link: Chapter G Maintenance Day We are planning a Chapter Fall Maintenance day in November. It will be on November 15. This one will be held at Ron & Sissy Morris s garage. So this is a heads up so you can plan for the event. In our planning, we thought it would be good to have a maintenance day in the fall and spring. Not everyone can make one or the other, for whatever reason, so here is double your chances of learning about your bike. The team of experts there will guide you through most any maintenance you want to perform. We are hoping these experts can assist you in learning how to do the various easy maintenance tasks on your Gold Wing. We do everything from changing oil, brakes, bleeding the brakes, adding accessories, repairing little issues, and other like items. But it helps if you let us know what you want or need, and then we can see if someone will be there with that expertise. And remember, we are not there to do this for you, but to help you. So plan to be part of the effort. Even if you don t have any maintenance requirements, it is an opportunity to lend a hand and learn. But some items take longer than others, so again, we need advance notice for what you want. And of course, you are welcome to just come and socialize. We will have a covered dish pot luck for lunch, and this is always fun. You get to try some of the finest cooking in the south. So, plan the date and get with us to see just what all can be done. Please let Mike Melton know at meltong@cfl.rr.com for your maintenance needs or desires. The G-Force 8
