One of the reasons was to get away from snow and ice. Well, this year it has been proven that we did not move far enough down south to get away from it. Before Chesapeake, we lived in Keflavik Iceland for four years, talk about having enough snow and ice. During this last storm we were lucky enough that our power did not go out. As for the members who did have power outages, glad to hear you survived. The Valentine Weekend down to Jekyll Island, GA that Kathy Truluck planned for us was a great weekend! We left at the right time (just after the ice storm). It sure was beautiful on the island. There was wild life everywhere and they were not afraid of people, so I got to take a few pictures that turned out really well (even though I had a few issues with the camera ;-). This winter has been tough to ride because of the weather and having to cancel the rides. We did have one good day that Rick & I rode up to Myrtle Beach and met up with Anita & Henry Lee. We spent the day shopping at the Bass Pro and riding the main drag at the beach. We can t wait for our upcoming mountain trip to Boone, NC. Those who are going should make sure to get your rides ready for the curves and elevation changes. One big thing to check is the brake pads. Don t put yourself and co-rider in an unsafe condition. There are many events this spring and summer to ride to. One is the South Carolina District Rally, May 1-3, being held in Florence, SC. Now is a good time to make your reservation if you haven t done so yet. This year s rally should be lots of fun with friends from all over. I need volunteers to help with our responsibilities at the convention. So if you are going and can help out, please let me know. We continue to look into our fall trip to the Florida Keys. This may be a little challenging to get the cost affordable but we are trying our best. If you have any ideas please let the staff know. That is all for now. Don t forget to check the calendar for upcoming events. Esther & Rick Palmer

2 Hello Family of Friends! I m certainly glad February is almost over! What a strange month of weather we have had, with not one, but TWO ice storms in one month. The first was not a big deal for us, no power loss. The 2 nd storm we were fortunate to only lose power for about 8 hours, but my parents lost theirs for over 3 days, and were finally convinced to come down to our warm house! We already had my daughter Kelli and 5-yr old Bridget here, they couldn t get home to Cary, NC so we had some fun with family! I love playing games and cooking, it was great times. The only bad part was Bob & I had to cancel our room reservation at the Sweetheart Weekend in Jekyll Island, GA. I truly missed going on that trip as we were looking forward to the getaway. But there will be other times, like the upcoming Spring Chapter Mountain Trip to Boone, NC!! I feel sure Old Man Winter will be gone by then! The FAMILY LODGE cabin is full. However, there are a few people going to a nearby hotel cabin. Billy Jackson will let us know which hotel. THE REMAINING FUNDS DUE FOR THE FAMILY LODGE cabin ARE DUE AT MARCH GATHERING. CHECKS CAN BE MADE TO ROBERT SINGLETARY. Call Lynne with questions. I have recorded payments received so far, as many of you are paid in full. The week after the mountain trip will be our ANNUAL POKER RUN, (which supports the Lowcountry Food Bank) to be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014, starting at the LOWCOUNTRY HARLEY-DAVIDSON and ending at KICKIN CHICKEN MT. PLEASANT. I need volunteers to help with setup, teardown, leading riders, tail gunners to ride cleanup, etc. Also can use any DOOR PRIZEs you may be able to obtain from someone you do business with. Provide them with the MERCHANT LETTER (Dennis or I can you a copy if needed). Pass out Poker Run Flyers wherever you can! Thanks in advance for your help! If nothing else, please come out and support the chapter by participating as a rider in the poker run! attack... Even with the weather, Chapter G was very active this month! Bob & I managed to get one ride in this month, on a sunny warm Sunday! My Dad enjoyed an impromptu Monday ride led by Bill Tulluck from Summerville over to Walterboro for lunch with a nice group! Hopefully the weather will continue to warm up and feel like Charleston weather!! I know I m ready to RIDE! Ride Safe ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME Lynne & Bob Singletary AC-D Chapter G POST SCRIPT DO NOT FORGET - MAINTENANCE DAY Saturday, March 29 TH THIS YEAR IT S AT A NEW LOCATION - THE HOME OF RON & SISSY MORRIS. BRING ALL YOUR SUPPLIES/PARTS AND GET YOUR BIKE READY FOR THE RIDING SEASON! MORE DETAILS BY G-MAIL At last month s gathering, I announced the poker run and mentioned that for each dollar raised for the food bank it would feed 10 meals; well, with inflation it is now $1 feeds 6 meals!! Just wanted to set it straight! We had a nice potluck Super Bowl Party at Floyd and Kathy s home. There was a movie matinee and dinner afterward this month, and the plaque 2

3 SAFETY CORNER Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller Chapter Asst. Educator Mike Melton Well, we are getting in to the riding season and we now want to look at our bikes to see what maintenance needs to be done. The Chapter will be having a maintenance day in March so the little things that need to be done can be done there. Remember, you need to have all parts and fluids with you. There will be people to help you, but not to do it for you. Also, remember that you cannot get big jobs like forks and such done. This is because it takes too many people away from helping others. You can learn a lot about your bike also. Karen and I have been busy this month. We visited Chapter J (Myrtle Beach) and Chapter O (Chesterfield/Hartsville) then went to Chapter V (Sumter.) I visited Chapter P in Lexington. Then this last weekend we went to Anderson for the Plaque attack. Dennis & Jack took the Hot Tweety to Anderson. Now how many of you are planning on going to the Convention in Florence? We need as many folks as possible to get registered early. This lets your District Staff know who is coming plus it helps them plan on what we need for the dinner on Thursday. So please get registered as soon as you can. We will have vendors and snacks in the vendor area. There will be a lot to do inside also. This facility has so much to offer that you will have to see it for yourself. There are a lot of hotels in the area. The Chapter had a movie day on Sunday Feb 16 there were about 10 or 12 people there to see Monuments Men. Then we went to Dickey s BBQ. I hope to see you all at the Gathering Saturday. Maybe the weather will let us take a ride after the gathering. Ride Safe and Have Fun Craig R. Miller Chapter G Educator This month has been full of surprises. On two different occasions, I was very tempted to ride my motorcycle on my out of town trips for work. On both occasions, I did my normal, of researching the weather for home, my destination, and in-between. On both occasions, I felt like the risk was too high to put myself in a weather condition that would not be favorable for two wheels. I m glad I did my homework. The first trip, I left Fayetteville, NC with three inches of snow on top of my truck, and in the yards. The roads were clear, and I thought had I rode the bike, it would have been a neat picture and ride in the snow. I got down into SC, and still had snow, but the roads had been clear. My thoughts were, I could have still done this on the bike. But as I was coming into the Florence area, my picture changed. I was looking at two clear tire tracks in each lane of I-95, being very grateful I had chosen four wheels over two. Then, the next day, we had the ice storm here in Charleston. Then the following week, I had a nice lovely trip up to Havelock, NC (close to Cherry Point). My initial thought was how awesome it would be to ride out to the outer banks while up that way, and come down the coast home. But, again, I checked the weather forecast. Although the trip up would have been awesome, the next day was calling for thunder storms and high winds. My gut said, this could turn bad, and the trip home could be ugly, so again, I chose four wheels over two. How glad I was as I felt the car move in the roadway a couple of times, as I had started home before the squall came through, and got caught in the middle. At one point, we were down to 15 mph, and I could barely make out the roadway in front of me, with a tractor-trailer beside me throwing additional water on my windshield. 3

4 So, what does all this mean? Safety first. I really love to ride my bike, and weather is normally not a deterrent. But, severe weather is always a cause for concern, and it is better to be safe than sorry. We can dress for the cold, the hot, or even the rain. But it becomes much more difficult to safely maneuver an open carriage in high winds, ice, or even snow. Lightening is just dangerous to be in any time on a two or three wheeler. Then the weight distribution for the open carriage is even more important IF we do get caught in the changing weather conditions. Also, one of the very important things is to always have the gear necessary for the potential conditions, not just the current conditions. This time of year, a cold front can come through in 30 minutes or less, and the 70+ degrees, drop to 55 or minus. And if you read my article from last month, where I talked about the wind factor for temperatures, you would know 55 degrees, at 55 mph, is an equivalent wind chill of 33 degrees. Frost bite can set in quickly, so having the right gear is extremely important. So, March should start bringing in some warmer temperatures (at least I hope), but is still subject to the cold fronts. So, Enjoy the ride, and ride to Enjoy. But keep it safe. Have a wonderful March and I look forward to riding with each and every one of you. Mike Melton Chapter G, Assistant Educator Ten Little Motorcyclists 10 little motorcyclists, cruising down the line. One had a heavy hand, and then there were 9. 5 Membership Enhancement Hello Chapter G, Being a member of GWRRA Chapter G involves lots of fellowship and benefits. One of the best benefits is that we all gather several times a month to see each other, share stories, ideas, etc. We also eat a lot! All kidding aside, we do have twice a month gatherings entitled,! These are planned by our Team Leaders at various locations around the Lowcountry. The team tries to be fair and not have them all in the same vicinity but all the venues are great! We have other activities besides eating, like movies, bowling and conventions which are great!!! Our Christmas party each year is so much fun. We all look forward to it. And, our oyster roast, well what can I say, food, food, food!!! At every monthly gathering we have door prizes, where members bring an item to the Gathering. Everyone at the Gathering gets a numbered ticket, towards the end of the gathering we draw tickets, if your s is selected you can take your pick of the items on the door prize table. Also, along with the door prize drawing, we do 50/25/25, etc. If you participate, you can go home with more cash than you arrived with!! This is lots of fun. We have a safety section of our gatherings that is given by our Rider Educator, Craig Miller. He shares a wealth of knowledge for all in attendance so that we can all go on a ride together and get to and from our destinations safely. We have lots of fun, so come on and join us!! You will make a lot of new friends, I know Fred & I have!! Happy Goldwing Riding!!! Anita &Fred Hull Chapter MEC s 5

12 TOP SECRET RECIPES VERSION OF Panda Express Mandarin Chicken By Todd Wilbur Recipe Type: Entrée Calories: 310 Cook Time: 20 Minutes Here's a dish from the rapidly growing Chinese food chain that should satisfy anyone who loves the famous marinated bourbon chicken found in food courts across America. The sauce is the whole thing here, and it's quick to make right on your own stovetop. Just fire up the barbecue or indoor grill for the chicken and whip up a little white rice to serve on the side. Recently, Panda Express took this item off their menu and replaced it with Grilled Teriyaki Chicken. Celebrate this dead food by continuing to make it at home. INGREDIENTS 2/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger 1/4 cup water 4 teaspoons arrowroot 6 skinless chicken thigh fillets On The Side - Steamed White Rice INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine sugar, soy sauce, lemon juice, oil, garlic, and ginger in a small saucepan. Combine water with arrowroot in a small bowl and stir until arrowroot is dissolved. Add to saucepan and turn heat to high. Stir often while bringing mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 4 to 6 minutes until sauce is thick. 2. Preheat your grill on high for chicken. 3. When the grill is hot, rub each chicken piece with oil and cook the chicken for 4 to 6 minutes per side or until completely cooked. Chicken should have browned in spots. 4. When chicken is done, chop it into bite-sized pieces. Pour the chicken pieces into a large frying pan over medium heat, Heat until chicken sizzles then reduce heat and cover chicken until ready to serve. Spoon chicken into a medium bowl, then pour all the sauce over the chicken and stir until well coated. Serve with steamed white rice. Serves 2 (large portions) 12
