Chapter Director Mike Melton P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC Things Happening Within the Chapter Well, we are going to try again. Last month, I announced we took Bronze for the Chapter of the Year (CHOY) award. Sadly though, we did not make the District CHOY. So, we are going to try again this year. So, how can you help our chapter to win, and what does it mean to you? First of all, attendance and participation. Those are the two primary ways to get points. The points are awarded based on what percentage of members we average at our Chapter Gathering. The closer we get to 50% of those people, the higher the points. Last year, we averaged 31 members for our 11 Chapter Gatherings. To put this in perspective, as of January 2016, we had 171 members on our roster. That means we have less than 6% of our people (yes, that is a single digit 6%) attending our chapter gatherings and enjoying the family fellowship we try to offer. And then, we actually have less than that attending the fun filled events that are planned. I wish I knew how to get those numbers up. So, for example, for last year, if we had 9 people attend an event, we received 4 points (maximum of 8). In order to receive the max, we had to have 16 people at the event. We fell short of that most of the time (except our meet to eats). Your participation in the events is the key to the fun factor, and for our submission for CHOY. April 9th we will be having our 2 nd Annual Frogmore. This includes two seminars prior to lunch. We would encourage everyone to participate, as this is educational for you and it helps our points system towards winning CHOY for next year. I will be announcing the two seminars as we get closer, but will try to ensure we touch on subjects applicable to the group as a whole. Starting in May, we may try doing a ride/seminar one night a week, or over the weekend. You should contact me and let me know which one you could attend. These will be based on the Seminar Cards, so as you fill a section, you get a hanger bar for your vest, or just the education that goes with them. We submit your attendance to District, who then records your training in the National Database. It s official. April 16th we will have an ARC in Easley/Liberty. Classroom will be that morning, with the parking lot that afternoon. Classroom will be at Mutt s BBQ, so there is a good place to eat before you go out to the range. The range is about 10 minutes away, and the course work will take most of the afternoon. If you would like to attend or if you have questions, contact me (Mike Melton) at meltong@cfl.rr.com or So, all that said. What does it mean to be the District CHOY? For one, we get recognition. Two, you get to have fun participating. Three, we get special seating during the District Rally at certain events. And did I mention, we all get to have fun doing things we wanted to do anyway? So, please, do your part, and help the chapter reach this award. And if there is something you would like to do, and we could do it as a group, by all means, contact me and suggest it. So far, my telepathy abilities have been severely impaired, so I could use your help. Until next time, ride safe and often, Mike Melton 2

Assistant Chapter Director 2016 Chapter Couple of the Year MJ & John LeBlanc MJ John acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org The Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S. The Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S. We started making plans to attend the GW Florida rally but soon decided it would be nice to add a side trip to Key West what s a few more miles. We mentioned the idea to one person, then another and before you knew it, a road trip was born. We quickly outlined a route travel down on the west side of Orlando, go east through Everglades National Park and then travel south through the Keys. On the return ride we would visit FL1G chapter for the Dairy Queen patch, attend Daytona bike week and end with a stop in St. Augustine. Before we left, George mapped out the itinerary that included distances between our main stopping points as well as the names of the restaurants, lodging places, gas stations and points of interested along the entire route a superb job! To this Bill added a few details like phone numbers and it was ready for distribution. Our caravan consisted of two bikes, four trikes and two cars a few left on Friday and the rest left on Saturday. We traveled about 400 miles the first day, staying overnight in Kissimmee. After all that riding, we walked to one of the nearby restaurants for a relaxing Italian meal. Day two took us along the Panther National Wildlife Refuge (was that fencing to keep Melvin out?), an airboat tour thru the mangrove jungles and grasslands, a stop at the Big Cypress visitor s center along old alligator alley and ending in Homestead. A big thanks to Ron for securing hotel accommodations at the AFB. The ride to Key West was about 130 miles along US Highway 1. We met Bob and Lynn for breakfast at the Island Grill on Key Largo and then headed out. Traveling from island to island, we crossed about 40 bridges including the famous seven-mile bridge. The ocean waters on both sides were various hues of turquoise and simply breathtaking. Due to the shallow waters, we could see birds sunbathing on the exposed white limestone sand dunes. Of course we had our picture taken at (Continued on page 4) 3

KEY WEST TRIP (Cont) the famed southern tip buoy and with Betsy the Giant Spiny Lobster Lupe and Gloria were the official photographers. We ended the day with dinner at the No Name Pub. Not sure how much money is stapled to the ceiling and walls but we heard estimates of $100K a very nice tip indeed. By day four, we needed some down time. A few stayed in Homestead and others took a relaxing ride to Key Biscayne. We all joined up for dinner at Shiver s BBQ and topped off meal with key lime pie. The next day we headed to Deltona, home of FL1G Chapter. We took the scenic route pass miles of nurseries, horse farms, cow farms and stopped at Lake Okeechobee, Florida s largest freshwater lake (very impressive). That evening we gathered Authentic German Dinner at Hollerbach s Willow tree café in Sanford Fl at Hollerbach s Willow Tree Café in Sanford. This quaint historic town is totally charming with its brick paved streets and illuminated trees. We enjoyed great authentic German food (bratwurst, schnitzel and sauerkraut to name a few), along with an evening of lively music. The following day we left early to attend the 75 th Annual Daytona Bike Week, in particular, the international speedway. The midway had every bike vendor imaginable, displays to test new products and plenty of demo rides. And let s not forget the bike accessories clothing, glasses, helmets, shoes, lighting, wheel components, novelty items, luggage, etc. We certainly didn t leave the place empty handed. Later that night we rendezvoused with FL1G chapter who took us on an official Order of the Red Spoon ride that ended at a local Dairy Queen. The Wizard (CD Tom Mitchell) led the induction ceremony and presentation of the patches. This was the final adventure of our road trip and we all had a truly enjoyable evening. As you can tell, we had a grand time, traveling about 1,700 miles. We left Charleston when it was about 45 degrees (leather jacket and chaps required) but after that the weather was perfect. Unfortunately, we did have a few hiccups. Ron lost his brake pads and elected to leave the group on day two. Someone forget their GPS, a headlight went out, a directional light stopped working, fog lights stopped working nothing that collectively we could not address. Both George and Gloria were sick and opted to travel by car. They served as our road captain most of the time - redirecting us through congested traffic, adding rest stops if warranted, making sure we were satisfied with the planned route, providing timetables for the next scheduled stop, etc. Their misfortune was our gain and we thank them wholeheartedly for their willingness to guide us. Our journey was successful because we are friends for fun, safety and knowledge. Everyone helped in the planning, took turns as road captain or drag, and were flexible as we made changes to the itinerary. Plans are already in the works for the next adventure we ll keep you posted. MJ and John LeBlanc 4

Rider Education Safety Corner Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Some keys to riding on safe tires? So, we are getting into the riding season, and how many of you are really ready for that ride? We had a great Maintenance Day, with a couple of items taken care of, but we missed many of you. We did the coolant and clutch on two bikes, worked on air horns, some wiring, and miscellaneous other things. We also saw some cupped tires on a bike, the owner was completely unaware of. So here is that gentle reminder, we need to be looking everything over really good, especially for those who have garaged their bike/ trike for the winter (or several months). Tires are important, especially knowing the date of manufacture. And you ask, how do I know that? Well, let me tell you, and for some of you old timers, just refresh your memory. Other than size, the other useful information on the tire's sidewall includes its manufacturing date. Look on the side for a raised block with four digits; it's usually next to the U.S. DOT tire identification number. The first two digits indicate the week of its manufacture, and the last two digits are for the year. For example, 1702 would indicate the tire was manufactured in April, Prior to 2000, there were only three digits, with the last one indicating the year. Asst. Chapter Educator Mike Melton P.O. Box North Charleston, SC meltong@cfl.rr.com Some tires may have raised triangles, or the letters TWI, to show where the tire wear indicators are in the tread. When these marks are equal to the tread, it is time for new tires. And that wear means, ANYWHERE on the tire. Understanding how tread and grooves in your tire work is important. What we want (as riders) is for the tire to cut through the water on the roadway, to ensure maximum traction. Therefore, tread depth is important. As a rule (and law in most states), once the tread gets below 2/32 in depth, you need to replace the tire. If you want to use a Lincoln Penny, if you cover part of Abe s head when you set it down into your tread. (See the picture below.) Anything less, it is time to replace them. So, check those tires out, and if you have questions, ask. Just a reminder, the rubber on the tire is the only thing keeping your traction on the asphalt highway. Better to have good rubber, than to visit it with your hands and knees. Hope this was educational, Mike Melton 5

Importance of T-CLOC inspections By now, we have all heard about performing a T-CLOC inspection (Tires and wheels, Controls and cables, Lights and electrics, Oil and fuel, Chain/driveshaft and chassis) of our bikes and trikes every time we ride. But honestly, do we??? Sure, we check out the tires for wear, air pressure or maybe just kick them to make sure they are not soft once in a while. We are usually running late and in a hurry to join up and ride after all. Maybe we check the oil once a month or so. How often do we check all the nuts and bolts, wires and cables, and the rest? In the weeks prior to our recently planned Florida trip, we had the brake recall performed at a Honda dealer, bought and installed a new front tire, took the trike to another Honda dealer for its 32,000 mile service and had the front fork seals and bushings replaced while in their shop for two weeks. We had lost our Garmin/Sirius XM antenna connection but the GPS was still working, so I asked them to check all the connections while they had the fairing and seat off for service. They said everything was fine, so off we went. Still, "No Antenna Connection Found" (Error Message). I mentioned this to Ron and he offered to help, being much more mechanically savvy than me. When we turned the handlebars, we noticed that the cable to the GPS motorcycle mount was frayed. Upon closer inspection of the cable, several wires were completely severed, others were frayed and the ground wires nearly cut through. This was a result of a missing grommet in the fairing and constant wearing of the cable against a sharp edge of the fairing. There was a good chance that the ground wire could have shorted out and left the trike completely incapacitated on our trip. The story ends well - as fate would have it, we took the car on the trip and avoided a potential disaster. A $60 replacement Garmin motorcycle mount and all the wires, help from Ron and Melvin, and we're back in business. Moral of the story - be sure to perform a thorough T-CLOC inspection every time!
