Chapter Director Mike Melton P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC Congratulations This month, I would like to start off welcoming some changes to our chapter. First, I would like to congratulate John & MJ LeBlanc in their selection for the Chapter Couple of the Year (COY). It is an honor to be presented this, and they have so earned this award. They have been instrumental in many of the activities within the chapter, and are proactive in supporting all of you. Please join me in congratulating them the next time you see them. Next, I would like to welcome our newest Assistant Chapter Directors, George and Gloria Servant. They have both expressed an interest in helping with the chapter, in helping with the Chapter of the Year (CHOY) activities, and are interested in assisting with the rides. They have a very pleasant personality, and I think they will be a great addition to our Team. So again, next time you see them, join me in congratulating them to the team. Then, I m proud to announce, our Chapter received Bronze Level for their Chapter of the Year submission. Now, all that means is, look out next year. We have two awesome folks keeping on top of this stuff this year, so let s see if we can do better next year. It is still an honor, but at the same time, just a step in the right direction. So, let s see if we can improve upon a good thing. One way to do that is Education. We need folks to take Education classes. We have three folks who have already completed the online OCP this year (congratulations to George, Gloria and MJ) and a few others working on it. We had our CPR/First Aid this year so that will help. But, if you still need a First Aid/CPR course (great for protecting your family), let me know. The instructor is willing to come back. And then we are going to have some education seminars ourselves. I m working on a Motorist Awareness Course, and several others. We will have our 2nd Annual Frogmore and Education Seminars in April. In addition, I m checking with Logan s to see if we might be able to get in early, and do a seminar before our Chapter Gathering. So look for those opportunities to improve. And if you have a suggestion for a course, let me know. Then we had visitors at our Chapter Gathering. Some even come bearing gifts, (The Hot Potato) of which we quickly handed off to Chapter SC-J later that evening. So, it s been an eventfully month, full of surprises. I hope some of you have enjoyed the ride, and those who have missed out, we would like to welcome to you to attend one of our many events this month. Until next time, ride safe and often, Mike Melton 2

Assistant Chapter Director MJ & John LeBlanc MJ John acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org The Biker s SUPER BOWL 16 For those of you who may not know, I am a football holic. We have moved many times in the last ten years, so I not only root for the New England Patriots but also for the Seattle Seahawks, the Philadelphia Eagles and now the Carolina Panthers. At the end of the football season, I start counting the days until the pre-season festivities begin. I participate in fantasy football with our son and we talk every week strategizing which players to keep and which ones to bench. I haven t won a season yet, but have lots of fun anyway. So this year we decided to host the Super Bowl dinner, although we were concerned we game and that s exactly what we got. With so many turnovers, fumbles and missed opportunities, we were all yelling and screaming for both sides. However, one of our guests (no name but his initials are MP) was almost flagged for unsportsmanlike behavior on a couple of occasions. Thank you to everyone who joined us to make this a great event. It really didn t matter who won (Broncos), it was the friendship and comradery that counted! BTW - the NFL schedule for season will be released in April.can t wait. didn t have enough room. We brought in the patio furniture, bought some folding chairs, took some chairs out of storage and started rearranging the living room. In the end we had seating for about 20 and the overflow could sit on the steps going upstairs (think of it as stadium seating J). Our GW family arrived just prior to the start of the game, each with a dish in hand. We had main dishes, side dishes, appetizers, desserts, snacks and beverages. Plenty to share and enough to feed the neighbors as well. So who did we think was going to win the game? Clearly the Panthers had the better record (15-1) but my heart was with the underdog Broncos (12-4). In fact, the Denver Broncos was my fantasy football defensive team and they were tenacious throughout the year. We just wanted to see a good John & MJ LeBlanc 3

Rider Education Safety Corner Chapter Educator Craig R. Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC QUICK TIPS: General Guidelines for Riding a Motorcycle Safely (Courtesy of MSF) Be visible: Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have. Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. If a motorist doesn't see you, don't be afraid to use your horn. Dress for safety: Wear a quality helmet and eye protection. Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. Remember the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear. Apply effective mental strategies: Constantly search the road for changing conditions. Use MSF's Search, Evaluate, Execute strategy (SEESM) to increase time and space safety margins. Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists' actions. Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible. Watch for turning vehicles. Signal your next move in advance. Avoid weaving between lanes. Asst. Chapter Educator Mike Melton P.O. Box North Charleston, SC meltong@cfl.rr.com Pretend you're invisible, and ride extra defensively. Don't ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Know and follow the rules of the road, and stick to the speed limit. Know your bike and how to use it: Get formal training and take refresher courses. Call or visit to locate the Motorcycle Safety Foundation hands -on RiderCourseSM nearest you. Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don't see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they've never been on a motorcycle and can't properly judge your speed. Information provided by: Motorcycle Safety Foundation Footnote: GWRRA offers their Advanced Rider Course (ARC) and Trike Rider Course (TRC) geared specifically towards the larger style cruiser bike or trike. Contact your local Rider Educator for class information. GWRRA has also recently announced the Refresher ARC/TRC. This must be taken within three years of a full up ARC/TRC, and can only be done once before a full up ARC/TRC. The advantage is a shorter class. It eliminates the classroom portion, requiring some classroom material on the course, and a slightly longer course time, but overall, a shorter course. Ride safe and have fun. Craig Miller 4

Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) Karen Miller 106 Heritage Ln, Summerville SC Several times in the past month I have heard safety talks that mentioned the co-rider and the role they play in riding safely. If you are a co-rider or have a co-rider, you should remember that you are actually riding as a TEAM. The co-rider is an extra set of eyes that can spot a hazard that the rider may not see because they are busy negotiating the hazards they DO see. You can also communicate to other vehicles on the road what your bike is about to do. That means you need to be in communication with the rider and/or be able to anticipate what the rider is about to do. As a co-rider you should be looking for obstacles or hazards right along with the rider. Once spotted, the rider will need to make snap decisions on how to get through them safely. You, the co-rider should be able to communicate to vehicles around you that you are about to make a change. That change could be a lane change or slowing down. Many of you may have noticed the gloves I wear with the red stop sign on the palm and the yellow hazard sign on the back. They are reflective so they will show up when lit by headlights. I am Craig s team member and when I know he needs to make a lane change I do two things. First I attempt to make eye contact with the driver of the car next to us, and second, I indicate the direction we need to move (right or left.) The symbols on my gloves are designed to get their attention. If we need to turn, I give the hand signal for the turn. If we are stopping, I give the two-handed signal for stopping with the red symbol facing the vehicles behind us. All the while, we are in communication with each other. Sometimes I might notice a vehicle that looks like it s going to do something unexpected, or I might notice one coming up fast. While I know he is scanning his surroundings and checking his mirrors, he cannot see all things at all times. I m his extra eyes and can warn him so he can react safely. He can also communicate the hazard or obstacle to others we are riding with so WE ALL can ride safely. Another thing I try to do is make eye contact with other drivers. That way I know they see me, and if they see me, they know we re there. We are no longer invisible. Generally I just give a friendly smile or wave, but sometimes I need to communicate with them using hand signals. Most drivers are considerate and courteous; they will generally yield. Occasionally, however, a driver will not yield. I need to communicate that to Craig, and Craig needs to communicate with other riders so they are aware. GWRRA has a Team Riding course that talks about the importance of communication among all riders. It is well worth takings. We also have a Co-Rider s Seminar that informs the co-rider of the issues a rider faces and how to get safely out of a situation should the rider become incapacitated in some way. It also instructs you in how to be an effective team member on the bike whether you are on a group ride or of by yourselves. It is also well worth the time investment. The key is the rider and co-rider are a team and need to function as a team. By communicating to other motorists around you of your intentions you can ensure that your ride is enjoyable and incident free. Other motorists will notice your riding technique and will remember. THAT, friends, is educating the motoring public about sharing the road. Ride Safe and Ride Alert! Karen Miller 5

2016 Couple of the Year The Next Adventure It was a very exciting moment - we were named the 2016 Couple of the Year (COY) at the Chapter Gathering in February. A total surprise! As we walked back to our seats, folks were congratulating us, wishing us good luck, telling us to keep up the good work, etc. But then panic set in, how could we possibility follow the footsteps of the 2015 COY, Ron and Sissy Morris, who set the bar so high with their enthusiasm and support for their GW family? We joined GWRRA in October 2014 after Mike and Guy followed John home one night. They were riding down Glen McConnell Parkway and saw John up ahead. John changed lanes, so did Mike and Guy. John took a left, so did Mike and Guy - following him right to our driveway. They extended an invitation to join them for two upcoming events, a Meet and Eat at East Bay Deli in West Ashley and a ride to Lexington to participate in a charity event called Ride for Kids. We were hooked and the rest is history. The District COY, John and Cindy Wood, told us to just keep doing what you are doing and have fun. Well during the past year our Chapter participated in a variety of things - we went to several district rallies, visited other chapters, attended Wing Ding in Alabama, took rider education classes, participated in MAD events and attended many social events. So I guess we will continue to do the same this year and hope to meet more GW folks along the way. Thank you for your vote of confidence, it is an honor and privilege. We will do our best to represent and serve as positive role models for our Chapter - we have big shoes to fill. John & MJ LeBlanc COY

When full, add tomato juice and seasoning to create a "free" soup, Instant potatoes are a good stew thickener. When cooking vegetables that grow above ground, the rule of thumb is to boil them without a cover. A lump of sugar added to water when cooking greens helps vegetables retain their fresh color. To cut down on odors when cooking cabbage, cauliflower, etc..., add a little vinegar to the cooking water. Egg shells can be easily removed from hardboiled eggs if they are quickly rinsed in cold water after they are boiled. Also, add a drop of food coloring to help tell the cooked eggs apart from the raw ones in your refrigerator. Two of them were riding new Hannigan Trikes & we met a man who said he is the Hannigan dealer in Conway. About half of our riders (who had previously eaten at Scott s & Kenny s) ate at Kenny s and the others went to Scott s; however, they said it was too crowded at Scott s so they returned & ate at Kenny s. We heard about another place nearby (Big D s) that we will probably check out the next time we are heading up that way. 10 Valentines Weekend - Jekyll Island Trip February 11-14, 2016 Jekyll Island is located about 10 miles east of Brunswick Georgia. In the 1770's general James Oglethorpe maintained an out post on the island. In 1794 a French family, the Bignon's bought the island. In 1886 the Bignon family sold the island to the Jekyll Island Club. The Jekyll Island Club was limited to 100 members which included the wealthiest American businessmen of the time. Considered the most exclusive social club in the country, its membership included the Astor s, Crane s, Vanderbilt s, Pulitzers, Morgan s, Gould s, McCormick s and Rockefellers. The members built a large club house, now the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, and a number of luxurious "cottages". It was here that in 1910 the concept of the Federal Reserve was conceived. The Federal Reserve was founded by six wealthy financiers and a U.S. senator. In 1931 it was estimated that 1/6 of the world's wealth was controlled by the members of the Jekyll Island Club. In 1942 the U.S. government evacuated the island and in 1947 the club sold the island to the state of Georgia. Today Jekyll Island is a Georgia state park. In addition to the historic district, Jekyll Island offers ocean front hotels, restaurants, 4 golf courses, hiking and biking trails all over the island and plenty of beaches! It also has a great camp ground, lots of good fishing, many other water sports and a good size water park with a giant water slide. Our wonderful weekend began Thursday February 11, 2016 with Dan and Evelyn Pittman, Lupe and Dee Carrera, Dennis and Sue DeFendi, Floyd and Kathy Truluck, along with Kathy s mom Mary Ogden, checking into the Hampton Inn, Jekyll Island. And then we had two brave cold weather folks Rick and Esther Palmer got checked in and got their camper setup up at the Jekyll Island Camp Ground. After every one had checked in and gotten settled we met for our 1 st meal together at The Wee Pub. We enjoyed wonderful conversation and good food. Friday morning all of us except for Rick and Floyd headed to St. Simons Island for the day. We began by wandering around and shopping at the St. Simons Pier Village area. Located on the south end of the Island, St. Simons' Pier Village district serves as the downtown social hub and is a popular destination for shopping, dining, gathering on the pier, nearby lighthouse, playground and picnic areas. Overlooking the ocean and Jekyll Island across the way, you'll find the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, Neptune Park with its ocean side pool and facilities, playground, miniature golf course, and an oak shaded picnic area, fishing pier, public library and theatre. We saw the St. Simons Lighthouse, built in 1815, but replaced many times. The1st one was a harbor light, then a coastal light replaced it. Located on the southern point of St Simons Island it marked the entrance to St Simons Sound. The lighthouse board raised the status in 1857 by installing a 3rd order lens, but is was destroyed during the Civil war. In 1870 work on the new one started then completed and lit in September It can be seen for 16 miles and is still working to date. We regrouped and headed to Palm Coast Café for lunch. The weather was good so we sat outside in the garden and enjoyed soups, salads, Greek (Continued on page 11) 10

Valentines Weekend - Jekyll Island Trip (Cont) (Continued from page 10) plates and sandwiches. After lunch we walked down to the pier then headed off for a tour around the island. Meanwhile, still on Jekyll Island Rick and Floyd are chasing golf balls around the Jekyll Island Golf Course and having a wonderful day enjoying the sun and golf cart rides. After their game of golf they drove over to St. Simons to meet the group for an early dinner at Barbara Jeans. Then we headed back to Jekyll Island to the camp ground for S 'mores around the camp fire at Esther & Rick s. For several folks it was the first time eating s 'mores and we all enjoyed them very much! Saturday morning after breakfast we headed out to the Jekyll Island Historic District on the west side of the island for a tour of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a hospital for sick and injured sea turtles, and is the only rescue and rehabilitation hospital of its kind in Georgia. The Center is open to the public and offers an interactive exhibit gallery and rehabilitation pavilion where you can see and learn about sea turtle patients. During the nesting months of summer (June and July), the center leads nightly turtle walks. Once the turtles hatch in August, the center gives hatchling walks at dawn a few times each week. After the tour we stayed in the historic area and toured the cottage shops and imagined what it was like over 100 years ago! The historic district is very fascinating with many beautiful buildings and gardens The district is also just across the street from the marsh with beautiful sunset views. We especially enjoyed the beautiful live oak trees. Then we headed off to visit Drift wood Beach at the north end of the island. Down near the Jekyll Pier there is a curve on the beach where you discover a bunch of mangrove trees overlooking the ocean. Following the trail we went straight to the Driftwood Beach! Beach animals such as porpoises, egrets, periwinkle snails, fiddler crabs and herons can be seen from this unique area. The beach is absolutely beautiful with driftwood scattered everywhere and there are horseback rides on the beach by a local tour group. Our Valentines' Day dinner was Saturday evening at Zachary s Grill in Brunswick where we enjoyed a lovely evening together celebrating. Again, a great time had by all, including Rick and Esther, whom took a break from their camper. Of course, then Sunday rolled around, and off we go heading back home. All in all it was a wonderful weekend, with great weather, fun by all and we look forward to the next trip. Kathy Truluck. 11
