Chapter Directors 2018 Chapter Couple of the Year Mike Melton & Anne Sheets P.O. Box 61885, North Charleston, SC From your Chapter Directors I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, with lot s of time with Family & Friends. I was invited over for Thanksgiving dinner, and although it was not as grand as the picture, it was real close. And now we are getting ready for the Christmas activities, with several things planned. Our Christmas Party/Gathering will be December 1st (just around the corner) along with our first Christmas Parade in Hanahan. See later for more details. Then the next weekend will be our Christmas Parade in Edisto Beach, which is also a lot of fun. Then the next weekend is the Wreath s Across America at Beaufort National Cemetery. This has become a tradition for Chapter G, and we hope between all these activities, you can find something you want to participate in. Next up we need someone to step up as a Chapter Director. Technically, this will be my last article as the Chapter G Director. I will not be leaving the area at least until March, so whoever the lucky volunteer is, they can pick my brains (if they wish) for awhile. If we don t get a new director, that will severely impact the chapter. The two required positions to have a chapter is a Director & Treasurer. We have a Treasurer who is willing to stay onboard for the new Director. In fact, all of the current officers have expressed their willingness to stay onboard, if the new Director chooses. So, please give it some soul searching, and if you have questions, you are welcome to contact me at or our District Director, Buddy Summer at If we don t have a director by 1 Jan, the chapter starts the process to shut down, which takes a few months, but it is a process. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me during my fours years as the Chapter Director. I can t say it s all be easy, but I had lot s of help to get through the tuff times. We ve had some awesome rides, with lot s of help in pulling all of them off. Lot s of activities, and some great social times. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this adventure and it will always be one of my fondest memories of my life. I would like to name a few people, who have always been there to support me. First, George and Gloria. I loved the Scavenger Hunt, and wish I could have participated in the second one. And someone else running the Christmas Party was a welcomed relief. And the many hours of just talking, planning, strategizing and friendship will always be a part of my life. Thank you for the fond memories. Then we have Craig and Karen Miller. We have not always seen eye to eye, but I have always respected your opinion, being you have been members much longer than me. And your efforts in putting on rides and trips has been awesome, and a great advantage to the chapter. And I still need to do the Church Ruins ride, which I have managed to always miss. And the Spring Mountain trips you planned were always fun. I especially enjoyed our Murphy, NC trip, and our visit to the Fields of the Wood. I didn t initially think I would enjoy it. But once there, I really did, and was thankful for your input and recommendations. All of your trips have been great. Thank you for some fun experiences I will never forget. 2 (Continued on page 3)

From your Chapter Directors (Continued) (Continued from page 2) And then Anita Fender. My trusted treasurer after Evelyn passed away. She stepped right up, and she has a great supporter in all our efforts. Thank you Anita. Then we had Guy Lamb. It was a sad situation when I took over at the Director, but Guy was always there to support. He would lead rides, come up with some awesome ideas, and was a great ride companion. He started the Frogmore meet to eat, where we would do two Rider Education seminars, before the meal. He was a grand host, and very accommodating to everyone. He was a friend, a fellow rider, a mentor, and did I say a solid friend. Thank you Guy for all you did to help the chapter become what it is today. Thank you for being a friend. We also had John & MJ for a little while, standing up to be my ACDs for some time. I always enjoyed your inputs, ideas, and point of views. You kept things interesting, and continued to surprise me with the new stuff, like the Super Bowl Pot Luck/game night. They have always been a great success. Thank you to both of you for all you did. Hopefully, you will continue to be a supporting crew to whoever takes over. I don t want to forget Anita & Fred Hull. You started off as my MECs, and seemed to always have some great ideas. You voice of reasoning was always welcomed. I just wish Fred hadn t had to work every other Saturday. We missed you both when you couldn t make the rides, except that is for the Edisto Parade. We still need to work on that (hee hee). Then we had Bill & Cathy Tulluck. Bill what am I ever going to do without you? A wealth of ride ideas, planning that went into them, and always ready to pick up the line and make something happen. Again, we haven t always seen eye to eye, but you definitely kept things interesting, and all jokes aside, you came up with some great ride and event ideas. I would also like to thank Mike & Sherri Pawlak. They recently stepped up to be our new MECs and Sherri has been teaching the CPR/First Aid classes for us for two years running now. Mike is the quiet professional, sitting in the background, but always having the voice of reason about things from their perspective. I wish you would have come along sooner. Thank you both. And then there was Floyd and Kathy Truluck. They have hosted the Chapter Oyster Roast for years, and we ALWAYS have a great time there. Help with the Christmas Parties, planning rides to Jekyll Island, and many other things. I m quite honored to know you and have you be a part of my life, both in the chapter and out. Folks, I could go on and on. So many of you have stepped up with ideas and support. People from other chapters, who have worked with me on ideas, or even rode down and visited our chapter. There have been so many awesome memories associated with my involvement in the chapter. And I do have to say, the more involved I got, the more fun I had the pleasure of enjoying. Because this organization does live up to it s motto: Friends, for Fun, Knowledge and Safety. And lastly, I would like to thank everyone in the state of SC, Ga, and NC who helped with teaching the riding courses here in SC. This was probably the most rewarding part of my last 5 years. I actually got to see some of you come through my class twice, and you still said you learned something new. That was my goal, and thank you for helping me to achieve that goal. I m not disappearing, but I am stepping away a little bit. I ll be available to help where needed or wanted. Thank you all for the memories. I will treasure them forever. And here is probably my most exciting picture from all our trips. What awesome and fond memories. I hope you all will keep them alive. Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful, Mike Melton 3

Assistant Chapter Directors George & Gloria Servant George Gloria acd-1@gwrra-sc-g.org Nashville Cats After attending Wing Ding s 40th Anniversary in Knoxville Tennessee, we continued a little bit further West on to Nashville. Not being huge country music fans, the thought of visiting Nashville was not top of mind for us. However, when you do visit Nashville, you just cannot help but to become immersed in the flavor of the country music capitol of the United States. Of course, we took a tour of greater Nashville and got the lay of the land, our trolley driver and guide pointing out all the famous landmarks. These included the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium, the Parthenon, Music Row, all the bars, lounges and honkytonks downtown and even a one of a kind guitar scoreboard. One of the things that struck us was the contrast of old and new Nashville, as captured here. The old town full of life with folks frequenting all the dancing and drinking establishments featuring music blaring unto the streets most of the day and into the night. Nashville is undergoing a huge construction boom evidenced by all the cranes erecting new tall modern buildings. The Batman building is AT&T s new home, just a block from all the action. We rode into Nashville from our campground the next day and visited the Marathon Motor Works Factory Museum and several stores that occupy the old warehouse. We started our tour visiting a Bourbon distillery and tasting just a few of their products. Then onto the Jack Daniels store - no tasting there. 4

We watch a good bit of American Pickers at home, and remembered that they opened a second store in Nashville. For those of you that don t know about them, Midwesterners Mike Wolff and Frank Fritz travel across the country in their van in search of rare artifacts and national treasures, picking through collectors homes, barns, garages, basements and warehouses looking to haggle and buy things that they can resell in their stores. This Antique Archaeology location featured a Von Dutch XAVW motorcycle from Mike s personal collection. Got the T-shirt. Submitted by George and Gloria Servant 5

District Rider Educator Rich Kitco 6 Ernie Court Irmo, SC Capn_rich_1@yahoo.com Cold Weather Rides Cooler, well OK, cold weather is here and there are a few things we need to keep in mind if riding all winter is something you like to do. Most important is the tires. Need to install the winter air right. That is a running joke but not too far from the truth. Tire pressures are related to temperature and when temps go down so does tire pressure. Upon checking tires on all the vehicles in the driveway this fall all pressures were down 4 to 6 pounds or more. So get that air gauge out before taking a ride. How about dehydration? Your body still loses moisture in the winter even though you have several layer of cloths on. You just don t notice it because no sweat is running down your face. While outdoors in cooler weather stay hydrated as you would any other time. Always keep a few bottles of water in the bike. Another is hypothermia. Out riding in the cold can suck the heat right out of your body if not properly dressed. If you own heated gear wear it and turn it on. It is easier to stay warm than to try to warm up once chilled. Dress in layers and wear something windproof. A rain suit makes a good wind block. Don t let a nice winter day go by, go for a ride. Richard Kitko, South Carolina District Educator OK, a little from the ride desk. We had a great ride to Lexington for Chapter P s meeting but had to cancel the ride to Savannah because it was so cold. The weather is going to get colder and make it harder to get rides in early to be back before dark. So I would like to know who would like to know if we come up with a ride on the spur of the moment? The big problem is we never know who is going. So I would like to have a list if people that would like to be notified if we plan something at the last minute. If you would please TEXT me at I will start a list and either call or text you. You can me at twowingcircus@yahoo.com. We will try to do some rides when the weather is warm enough to ride and not freeze us to death. If you have any ideas for a ride please let me know and we can talk about it. The big thing is when we plan a ride we need to know who is going. So I think we will have a sheet at the meeting to sign up on. If we get no one to sign up, then we won t go. Also, we are looking for someone to step up and fill the Chapter Director s spot. If you would like to do this we would be happy to talk to you and help you succeed as a Leader of the Chapter. It would give you a way to get some of YOUR ideas out and put your mark on Chapter G. Till next month. RIDE SAFE!!! Craig Miller, Ride Coordinator 6

Recipe of the Month Coconut-Pecan German Chocolate Pie Prep: 50 min. + chilling Bake: 35 min. + chilling Ingredients 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons cold lard 3 to 4 tablespoons ice water FILLING: 4 ounces German sweet chocolate, chopped 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 4 large egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans TOPPING: 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 1/4 cup butter, cubed 2 large egg yolks 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup chopped pecans Preparation In a small bowl, mix flour and salt; cut in lard until crumbly. Gradually add ice water, tossing with a fork until dough holds together when pressed. Shape into a disk; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 30 minutes or overnight. Preheat oven to 400. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim pastry to 1/2 in. beyond rim of plate; flute edge. Line unpricked pastry with a double thickness of foil. Fill with pie weights, dried beans or uncooked rice. Bake minutes or until bottom is lightly browned. Remove foil and weights; bake 6-8 minutes longer or until light brown. Cool on a wire rack. Reduce oven setting to 350. In a microwave, melt chocolates in a large bowl; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. Whisk in milk, egg yolks and vanilla; stir in pecans. Pour into crust. Bake minutes or until set. Cool 1 hour on a wire rack. Meanwhile, in a small heavy saucepan, combine brown sugar, cream and butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat. In a small bowl, whisk a small amount of hot mixture into egg yolks; return all to pan, whisking constantly. Cook 2-3 minutes or until mixture thickens and a thermometer reads 160, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and vanilla; cool 10 minutes. Pour over filling; sprinkle with pecans. Refrigerate 4 hours or until cold. Test Kitchen Tips Use any single-crust pie pastry your heart desires, including pre-made if you're short on time. Hold the scrambled eggs, please! 10 Last year, Chapter G made a $400 donation to One80 Place in Charleston to benefit homeless Veterans. This year we have accepted donations, held another Scavenger Hunt/Ride Fundraiser and raffled off 10 baskets and a framed picture at our October Gathering. Our goal for 2018 was to raise at least $500. We have just surpassed our goal and still have three beautiful quilts to raffle off at our December Gathering/Christmas Party. A - 38x50 Red, White & Blue Lap Quilt B - 68x68 Patriotic Themed Quilt C - 32x32 Wall Hanging/ Doll Quilt Three separate drawings will be held at the Chapter Christmas Party on December 1st. Need not be present to win. All money raised goes to One80 Place. If you just want to donate some money and need a receipt for tax purposes, you are welcome to write out a check to One80 Place and give it to Gloria or Anita and you will be provided with a receipt. Your generous donation will be added to the funds we have collected and presented to One80 Place after the Christmas Party. We thank you in advance for all you can do! $.93 of every dollar you donate goes to funding services, and when your dollars go to work, they help nearly 1,000 individuals return to housing annually and about 90% will stay housed, even after two years. 10

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A rookie police officer pulled a biker over for speeding and had the following exchange. Officer: May I see your Driver s License? Biker: I don t have one. I lost it after my fifth DUI. Officer: May I see the Owner s Card for this vehicle? Biker: It s not my bike. I stole it. Officer: The motorcycle is stolen? Biker: That s right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the Owner s Card in the tool bag when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There s a gun in the tool bag? Biker: Yes sir. That s where I put it after I shot and killed the dude who owns this bike and stuffed his dope in the saddle bags. Officer: There s drugs in the saddle bags too? Biker: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the rookie immediately called his captain. The biker was surrounded by police and the captain approached the biker to handle the tense situation. Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Biker: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Who s motorcycle is this? Biker: It s mine, Officer. Here s the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your tool bag so I can see if there s a gun in there? Biker: Yes sir, but here s no gun in there. Sure enough, there was nothing in the tool bag. Captain: Would you mind opening your saddle bags? I was told that you had drugs in them. Biker: No problem. The saddle bags were opened. No drugs. Captain: I don t understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn t have a license, stole this motorcycle, had a gun in the tool bag, and that there were drugs in the saddle bags. Biker: Yeah, and I bet he told you that I was speeding, too! 11
