1 Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California You're a Grand Old Flag! That's the theme for this year's Fourth of July Parade in Grass Valley. And here are some of our club members, carrying the flags in last year's Fourth of July parade in Nevada City. We will enter our beloved GCGAC Chalet in the parade. The parade starts at 11:00 am. The Chalet needs to be decorated and the plan is to meet near downtown Grass Valley at 9:00 am to decorate (Location TBD). The Chalet needs to be at our designated number (TBD) location by 10:00 am. We need members of our club to march in the parade and carry flags and banners. Please contact David Moss via at modavek@aol.com if you will participate in the parade and if you will carry a flag or banner. 3 Activities German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Herr Erhobenem Zeigefinger at left) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club! Classes are FREE with club membership. The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class members' homes. For more information, call Rebecca at (916) Conversational German Group Will meet Tuesday, July 11 (change of date due to July 4 celebration) From 4 until 6 p.m. at Christel Hermansen's, 154-B Sutton Way, G.V. PLEASE call her at or christelhermansen@comcast.net if you are coming or not. Anyone who is interested in joining the group, please call Christa at HAPPY JULY 4 TH TO EVERYONE. Christa Summer Solstice in Germany The Summer Solstice this year occurs on June 20 at 9:24 p.m. local time, near midnight in Germany. 364 summer solstices ago, on June 20, 1653, the Nuremberg town council issued a decree allowing folks to celebrate the occasion with bonfires. And, as often happened, the church co-opted the holiday and added it to their own calendar as Johanistag (John the Baptist Day), slightly offset to June 24. The peasants believed that the bonfires would cast out evil spirits, heal ailing domestic animals, and generally bring good fortune. To the present day, summer solstice is still celebrated in Germany with bonfires, although without as much superstition as in earlier times. Seems like fun, but don't get any big ideas about lighting a bonfire in Nevada County during the summer. Be sure to check out the official club web page! It has all kinds of interesting stuff, including photo galleries, links, and prior newsletters. It s located at: PAGE 3

In addition, Croatia is now on the list of preferred destinations, considered as "a cheaper Italy" with activities like boating and scuba diving. Our own Bob and Lynn Knoll Scheetz just toured Croatia -- including Zagreb, Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. We are expecting a full report at an upcoming meeting, complete with amusing anecdotes and a slide show. The same goes for our other world travelers. Entertain us! PAGE 5

7 "You're a Grand Old Flag," German Style CENSORED CENSORED War ensign of the Reichsflotte ( ) North German Confederation ( ), off and on. Nazi-era Hakenkreuz ( ) Weimar Republic and present-day Bundesrepublik The Stars and Stripes of the USA have maintained their same basic motif since 1776, but the German flag has undergone many changes during that same time. The black-red-gold tricolor flag first appeared in The black-white-red tricolor was adopted as a concession to Prussia (black & white) and the red and white Hanseatic colors. This flag was used through World War I. The Weimar Republic used black-red-gold, same as modern day, but people considered the flag to be a symbol of humiliation following Germany's defeat in the war. In 1922, the black-white-red flag was re-adopted. When the Nazis came to power, they maintained the same color scheme with a novel design, as Adolf Hitler wrote, because "a really striking emblem may be the first cause of awakening interest in a movement." [No argument, there.] After the defeat of the Nazi regime, the Federal Republic of Germany re-adopted the present-day flag. East Germany used the same colors, but added a coat of arms. Since re-unification in 1990 the country uses the Bundesrepublik flag shown at right above.
