1 Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California Summer Activities What's happening at the Gold Country German-American Club this summer? We can always depend on the Happy Wanderers hiking group for beautiful scenery, great exercise, and an opportunity to visit the higher altitudes with their promise of cooler temperatures. Some adventurous souls even go swimming in these cold mountain lakes. Club members Bob and Lynn Scheetz, John and Renate Hettrich, and Susanne Bader and Phil Missimore, have returned from visits to Germany, Italy, and Croatia this summer. Rick and Diane Range are planning a tour of Germany by bicycle in the coming month, similar to their adventures last year. Their itinerary includes the picturesque river bike paths along the Weser, the Elbe, and the Oder Rivers, riding the Deutsche Bahn railway, and staying overnight at Zimmer frei. They plan to bicycle about 60 km (37 miles) per day and to order Märzen Bier as wellearned refreshment after each day's travel. They'll be speaking German they have learned in Rebecca's language class. Gute Reise, Rich and Diane! And be careful where you park your bikes... Club meetings have gone torpid for the summer, but we'll be picking things up soon, starting with Oktoberfest in mid-september. PAGE 1

2 GOLD COUNTRY GERMAN-AMERICAN CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST,, 2017 Kuckucksuhren You used to see them in everybody's houses -- cuckoo clocks! They were very trendy in the 1950's and '60's, perhaps because American tourists recognized old world craftsmanship available as souvenirs at bargain prices. The body of the clock was typically carved of wood from the linden tree, a European hardwood. Sometimes walnut was inlaid. The clock mechanisms were Swiss-made and kept remarkably accurate time. Intrinsic to the assembly was the tiny carved likeness of a cuckoo bird, and a mechanism with tiny bellows and pipes to produce a "coo coo" sound along with a chime to indicate the hour. Fancy models like the one below also featured an animated procession of miniature carved folk dancers and a music box to play tunes such as "Edelweiss" and "The Happy Wanderer" every hour. The body is typically carved in a "hunting lodge" or "Chalet" style. The clock shown here has deer with antlers, crossed Schießgewehre (rifles), upside-down hanging game animals, a hunting horn surrounding the clock face, and various bits of forest debris. The face of early cuckoo clocks were sometimes made of tin or porcelain, in various shapes and styles according to customer preferences. This seal attests to the authenticity of the clock, having been made in accordance with the Black Forest Clock Association. Large, ornately carved clocks like this one can cost as much as $10,000. Times have changed since postwar Germany in the 1950's. A cottage industry has become big business. Clocks with modern spring-activated or electronic quartz clock movements can be bought, but part of the charm of a cuckoo clock is its traditional mechanism that harkens back to an earlier age. Some very early clocks used wooden gears to compensate for the effect of humidity on the mechanism. Hanging by chains from gear wheels, individual lead weights, cast to resemble pine cones, drive the clock, the chiming mechanism, and in this case, the parade of townspeople above the clock face. Resetting the weights generally lasts for 8 days. PAGE 2

Schulze on July 8, Otto was a long time member of the club and was known and loved by all of us. Margot Schulze, Ottos' wife for nearly 62 years, is presently in mourning, and is somewhat overwhelmed. She will be able to provide a photo and some memories of Otto in a future edition of this newsletter. Our hearts go out to you, Margot. Herzliches Beileid. This year, Theresa and Stefan Arth celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! Who could be more American than Doris Day? Actually, she's German-American! She was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio. All four of her grandparents were German immigrants. She began her career singing with the Les Brown band in By the 1950's, she was one of the top ten singers on the pop scene. She started a film career in 1948 and by the early 1960's was a star in more than ten blockbuster movies. She now lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and works in animal welfare activism. She lives so close, maybe we could visit? PAGE 4
