1 Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California German-American Day Celebration Next regular meeting meeting at Seaman's Lodge, Friday, October 6 we will celebrate German-American Day. Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. Ceremonies will begin at 4:30 -- National Anthems, Flag Ceremony, and a brief history of German-American Day, and video presentation (see below). Dinner will be served at 5:45. Please bring you own table settings! Be sure to RSVP so that we prepare enough food! John Hettrich, jhettrich@gmail.com, Who didn't like Ike? America's only 5-star General was Dwight D. Eisenhower. He commanded the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War II, and after the Allied victory, Eisenhower acted as Military Governor of the U.S. Occupation Zone in Germany. In response to the devastation of war, he arranged for distribution of American food and medical equipment to the German civilian population. Later, in 1952 and in 1956, he won landslide victories in the U.S. Presidential elections. He was of Pennsylvanian Dutch (Deutsch) ancestry, and will be featured among many other notable German- Americans in the video presentation planned for German-American Day at the next Club meeting on October 6. 2 Notes from the Board October Newsletter The GCGAC Oktoberfest was a fabulous success. The food was great thanks to a tremendous effort from Renate and John Hettrich and several members who pitched in to help. The Papa Oom-Pah Band highly professional as usual set the tone of the party at a very high energy level. Help Wanted: Your club needs volunteers to help with events and activities. German-American Day Friday, October 6 needs volunteers to help with food preparation, setup and cleanup and more. This is the only event still needing a Meeting Director. Publicity: I would like to get one or several people to help put our club into social media Facebook and other. A sad Facebook page (which Bob Scheetz created) has only one photo and little more, but it is getting some activity. With a little work, it could be a communications channel for members and a way to attract new members. There will printed copies of the full roster at each meeting. If you would like a PDF copy, please send a request to Bob Scheetz bobscheetz@gmail.com. Your Board would like to receive feedback from you questions, comments, suggestions, criticism, complements, etc. Send an to any board member. President Bob Scheetz bobscheetz@gmail.com Vice-president Dave Emanuel daveandjess50@comcast.net Treasurer Christa Benson cbenson1@suddenlink.net Secretary Dave Moss modavek@aol.com Program Director John Hettrich jhettrich@gmail.com At Oktoberfest, audience participation was key! Lilli Sackl and Margot Schulze helped lead the singing while the Papa Oom-Pah-Pah Band (above) set the tone, led by Kapellmeister Paul Trethewey. PAGE 2

7 Hofbräuhaus in München Last month, we had a report about the history of the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, and here we have a photo of one of our own members, John Hettrich, at that very place, last July, when the weather was warm enough for outdoor dining. John is enjoying a generous portion of Schweinhaxen, washing it down with a similarly generous liter-sized Mass of Bier. (John says it was a hot day!) If people in Germany eat like this every day, why aren't they fatter? John reports that Schweinhaxen is not available in the USA, at least not around here. You have to travel to Munich to get the real deal! Did you know that in Munich, there is a city ordinance that prohibits construction of buildings over four stories high? Keine Wolkenkratzer! Improves the view of the clouds for everyone!
