1 Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California Next Meeting: WEDNESDAY November 7, 5 p.m., at Seaman's Lodge: German Movie Night, showing "Good Bye, Lenin!" In German with English subtitles. IMDB Synopsis: "In 1990, to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long coma, a young man must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared." This is a funny premise! The movie is only about an hour and a half long, so come and see it! Doors open at 5:00, bar open, movie starts at 5:45 p.m. At 6:40, intermission with popcorn. Please bring appetizers or desserts! This year, we combined Oktoberfest with German-American Day ceremonies. (Normally, German- American day is October 6. We celebrated early!) We presented the colors, and sang both the American and German national anthems. Our dancers marched forward in preparation for their exhibition, and we performed our Burgermeister's beer keg tapping ritual to officially start the Oktoberfest party. Alles Zusammen! Geht's los! So, there's no general meeting scheduled for October! PAGE 1
2 Notes from the Board Oktoberfest was a great success. The brats (Weisswurst) were delicious. Renate s pretzels were a big hit. The Papa Oom Pa band led by Paul Trethewey was wonderful. About 75 members and guests attended. The club meeting for October has been canceled. Our next meeting is Saturday, November 3. The Christmas Party follows on Saturday, December 8 th. Like our Facebook page! Continue to take a look at our Facebook page, Gold Country German Club and give it a LIKE. Your Board would like to receive feedback from you questions, comments, suggestions, criticism, complements, etc. Send an to any board member. In this photo, they look like they're doing all the work, but really it was a team effort that included too many people to list. Thanks to all who brought food, worked in the kitchen, served, bartended, decorated, set up and tore down! Couldn't have done it without 'ya! The Alpine Dancers, performing the Zillertaller, Rohrbacher, Landler, and Öffner. Pictured here, Susanne Bader, Dave Moss, Larry White, and Kristina Wetherbee. Kay Moss is there, too, at the ready! 3 Activities German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Herr Erhobenem Zeigefinger at right) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club! Classes are FREE with club membership. The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class members' homes. For more information, call Rebecca at (916) Conversational German Group The German Conversational Class will meet October 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Christel Hermansen's, 150 Sutton Way, Apt 132. Hope to see you there! PLEASE call her if you are coming If anyone would like to join the class, give Christa a call at New members are welcome! The Happy Wanderers Hiking Group It bears repeating: Being a Happy Wanderer in the Gold Country German-American Club is such a bargain! Just look at that scenery, at right! This is from the 3-day outing at Saddleback Lake, last August, hiking at thousand foot elevation. Can you see Fred in that photo? For the cost of yearly club dues, you get free guided hikes from Fred and Karen Herrmann, who know all the good trails in Nevada County and neighboring counties. In addition to that, Fred is a horticulturalist who can identify many of the wildflowers seen on the hikes. It's great exercise with congenial companions. The hikes take place on Thursday, usually from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. If you're a 9-5 M-F worker, consider taking a Thursday off to join the Happy Wanderers. It will be good for your body and your soul. 6 Unsere Leute New Member Susan Vogt, left, has been a club member for nearly a year, so this introduction is overdue! Susan recently retired from a nursing career at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She climbed Mt. Tamalpais in Marin when she lived in that area, and now she's an avid hiker with the Happy Wanderers. She also is a spinner and a weaver, and has won blue ribbons at the Nevada County Fair for her work. Her son and 5 cute grandkids live in Nevada County. Somebody, please have a name tag printed up for Susan! She comes to meetings and has nothing to wear. Here's Susan, jumping in mit beiden Füßen to her role as Tarbender, offering Fred Herrmann a choice of social lubricant during the recent Oktoberfest. 7 GOLD COUNTRY GERMAN-AMERICAN CLUB NEWSLETTER OCTOBER, 2018 The largest chemical producer in the world is BASF. The company was founded in 1865 as Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Its first business was extracting analine from coal tar and using this to make synthetic dyes. The product line branched into soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, fertilizers, and explosives. By the mid-1950's, the company was making plastics such as nylon and styrene. In the 1970's, a division of BASF produced recording tape, such as that shown below. It was a quality product with unique protective packaging that offered exceptional archivability. Since the 1980's BASF has left the consumer product arena and is practically invisible, even though they employ over 115,000 people and have annual sales of $80 billion. BASF Over the years, BASF underwent several mergers and acquisitions. One such acquisition in 1965 was that of the Glasurit paint company. Today, Glasurit automotive paint is marketed by BASF as a high end "refinishing" product and it is a favorite of classic car restorers. In the 1960's, Glasurit enamel was Porsche's brand of choice for painting their new cars. Some old Porsches still have their original Glasurit paint today!
