1 Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California OKTOBERFEST KOMMT GLEICH! Yes! The Gold Country German-American Club's Oktoberfest is just around the corner! We'll have authentic food, authentic music, dancing, sing-alongs, a little ceremony, raffle prizes, a multi-media presentation, and, oh yeah, did we mention beer? We want to fill the Seaman's Lodge with people, like we did last year. The event is private, for Club members and their guests, so you are welcome and encouraged to bring guests. Dirndls and Lederhosen optional: Wear 'em if you got 'em! Place: Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City, CA Date and Time: Saturday, September Doors open at 4; dinner ~ 6:30. Back by Popular Demand! The Papa Oom-Pah-Pah Band will include accordionist Patsy Hannebrink for a musical performance you won't want to miss. Be prepared to sing along with In München Steht ein Hofbräuhaus! Yes, in German! Papa Oom-Pah-Pah Band Patsy Hannebrink, accordion PAGE 1

2 Hofbräuhaus in München The Hofbräuhaus in Munich is owned by the Bavarian state government. Originally founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V, it was the Royal Brewery for the kingdom of Bavaria. Wilhelm's son and heir, Maximilian, demanded the brewery develop a variety of beers, including Weissbier and Maibock. It is recorded that during the Thirty Years' War in 1632, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden invaded Bavaria and threatened to sack and burn the city of Munich. He agreed to leave the city in peace if the citizens surrendered some hostages, and 600,000 barrels of Maibock beer. The citizens complied, and the city was spared. [How large were those barrels?] Beer from Hofbräuhause was also once used to put out a fire at the Munich opera house. In the early days, the Hofbräuhaus was reserved only for high society -- members of the royal court and their friends. During the reign of King Ludwig I, the Hofbräuhaus was opened to the general public. As early as 1900, the Hofbräuhaus was already a tourist attraction. The song, "In München Steht ein Hofbräuhaus," was written in 1935 by Wilhelm ("Wiga") Gabriel. Wiga was mostly known at the time as a composer of marches for military bands in the German army. The song was a smashing success, and soon became the anthem of beer gardens everywhere. Today, Hofbräuhaus is a franchise. Several beer gardens bearing the Hofbräuhaus name have been built in places as far from Germany as Korea, Brazil, Australia, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Where are the "Notes from the Board" this month, we hear you asking? A board meeting was held and the gist of it is: Oktoberfest and German-American Day were planned. We need more publicity and promotion. Hank Stoffel gave a report from the national level. The dance group at Sacramento Turn Verein reportedly invited our Alpine Dancers to join them. New club members were approved. And we have money in the bank. Next month, Bob Scheetz will give a better report. See page 4. PAGE 2

3 Activities German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Herr Erhobenem Zeigefinger at right) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club! Classes are FREE with club membership. The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class members' homes. For more information, call Rebecca at (916) Conversational German Group Will meet Tuesday, September 5 from 4 until 6 p.m. at Christel Hermansen's, 154-B Sutton Way, Grass Valley. PLEASE call her at or christelhermansen@comcast.net if you are coming or not. Anyone who is interested in joining the group, please call Christa at Did you know? Club member Dennis Schuetzle serves as secretary in the California Baden-Württemberg Sister States Organization, which was formed in 2016 as a nonprofit corporation to promote business opportunities, collaborative environmental programs, German-American cultural ties and student exchange programs between the States of California and Baden-Württemberg. Baden-Württemberg (B-W) is a state in southwest Germany bordering France and Switzerland with the Rhine River serving as the Western and Southern borders. Stuttgart is the capital city, and the Black Forest lies in the mountainous southwest. In Baden-Württemberg is also the city of Kandern, the birthplace of John Sutter who founded Sutter s Fort and Sutterville in Sacramento, and Sutter s Mill in Coloma. So, there is cause to declare Kandern and Sacramento as Sister Cities. Beyond the cultural and economic aspects of state and city sisterhood, above, California's Governor Brown (Braun) recently formed the Under 2 Coalition with Winfried Kretschmann, the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, to support efforts to reduce the impending threat of global climate change. Dennis Schuetzle recently presented background materials to Governor Brown and several travelers from Baden-Württemberg, titled Historical and Predicted Global Climate Changes and Recommendations on Potential Accelerated Climate Moderation Approaches. 4 Unsere Leute What on earth!? Our very own club president, Bob Scheetz, had a bicycling accident! He veered off the bicycle path, took a spill, and ended up with a broken femur and road rash, "all over"! Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet, so no head injury. The doctors patched him up, but now his leg will set off the metal detectors at airport security. Although Bob will be attending the Oktoberfest, he is not likely to be dancing. Get well and on your feet soon, Bob! September Birthdays Gute Besserung September 2 September 2 September 10 September 12 September 22 September 25 Helena Manfred Kim Spranger Anneliese Welch Roland Bueche Margot Schulze Andrea Jensen Fini Hackl Bill Nickerl Stefan Arth Bob Scheetz Helene Suess Please notify Christel Denzler when you are well or when you want to be taken off the Gute Besserung list. Thank you! Tune to KNCO Radio AM 830, weekdays at 7:50 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. to hear your birthday greeting from GCGAC! Who could be more American than Miss Crabtree? Do you recognize this actress? She played the part of school teacher Miss Crabtree in the Our Gang and Little Rascals comedies. Her stage name was June Marlowe, but she was born Gisela Valaria Goetten on November 6, 1903, in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Her parents were German immigrants. She was the very essence of 1920's femininity and sweetness. We all wanted a teacher like Miss Crabtree! PAGE 4

6 HAPPY WANDERERS HIKING SCHEDULE FOR SEPTEMBER Sept Lakes Basin (Hike to Sierra Buttes) This is part of our annual camping trip to the Lakes Basin, and for that day we are planning (requested by many of you) to hike to the top of Sierra Buttes... an experience of a lifetime! It is a strenuous 5.5 mile round-trip, but well worth it. If anyone is interested in coming up for just that day-hike, please let us know ahead of time for time and meeting place. We usually end the day on the way home by stopping for a refreshing dip in Sand Pond Lake near Sardine Lake. Sept Mount Judah This is one of our challenging hikes but spectacular and beautiful. We hike along Pacific Crest Trail (P.C.T.) from the old Donner Pass on the old highway #40 to Roller Pass and up to the top of Mount Judah, where we have lunch with a 360 degree view. We hike on to Cold Stream Pass and a little optional side trip to Donner Peak with another great view over Donner Lake This is a 6.5 mile strenuous hike with an elevation gain of about 1000 feet. First section is uphill on a rather rocky trail. Paved to the trailhead. We meet in Colfax and in Nevada City at 8:30 am We ALL meet at Soda Springs exit. app. 9:30 am Sept. 21,... Scotts Flat Lake This hike goes across the dam down to lower Scotts Flat Lake. We have lunch at the campground where swimming is possible. It s a 6 mile hike rated easy to medium. We all meet at 9:00 am at the store at the corner of Banner-Quaker Rd. and Pasquale Rd. in Nevada City. Joan Hardy will be leading this hike. Sept Castle Peak / Basin Peak First we hike to Castle Pass, and from there we go one mile up a steep trail almost to the top of Castle Peak. We continue over the ridge to Basin Peak ' - where we have lunch. We'll have views from the Coastal Range to far into Nevada. From there it's all downhill to Peter Grubb's Hut and on back to the cars. Total length is 7-8 miles. The most strenuous hike of the season! We meet in Colfax and the Government Center in N.C. at 8:30 am Second meeting place is Castle Pass Trail Head on the north side of I-80 at the Boreal turnoff app. 9:30 am If you are not a regular hiker with the group, and would like to hike with us, call Fred first, since the hike might have changed for various reasons. 7 Grundig Rundfunkgerät In the days before transistors and stereophonic sound, table radios such as this Grundig 2540, made in West Germany (circa 1965), were popular in this country among discerning customers. The Grundig was one of the first radios capable of receiving FM broadcasts, which offered much better sound quality than AM. The radio could also receive short wave, which was utilized in Europe for broadcast. Some European stations (e.g., Radio Deutschland) could be heard the US. However, in this country, only ham radio operators transmitted on short wave, so the radio made eavesdropping on those conversations possible. Radio bands were selected with the piano key buttons below the dial. The dial face had lower frequencies on the right and the higher ones on the left, opposite from American radios, and the tuning ranges were those used in Europe, which overlapped the US tuning range. Max Grundig, the company's founder, was a stickler for details. These vacuum tube radios were well built, by hand, using point to point wiring rather than printed circuit boards. The cabinet of the radio was made of real wood, but it was typically finished to such a high gloss that it looked like plastic. In the late 1970's, Grundig lost market share to lower priced stereo gear made in Japan, and the company was acquired by Philips in Vintage Grundigs in good condition, such as the one pictured, are still fetching several hundred dollars on Ebay. You might get lucky and find one in a thrift store.
