Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California OKTOBERFEST KOMMT GLEICH! Yes! The Gold Country German-American Club's Oktoberfest is just around the corner! We'll have authentic food, authentic music, dancing, sing-alongs, a little ceremony, raffle prizes, a multimedia presentation, and, oh yeah, did we mention beer? We want to fill the Seaman's Lodge with people, like we did last year. The event is private, for Club members and their guests, so you are welcome and encouraged to bring guests. Dirndls and Lederhosen optional: Wear 'em if you got 'em! Admission: $10. Place: Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City, CA Date and Time: Saturday, September Doors open at 4; dinner ~ 6:30. Wir werden alle tanzen, essen, singen, und trinken! As written by Bob Scheetz in his "Notes from the Board" (page 2), this year we need some extra HELP, and this is the perfect opportunity for our NEW MEMBERS to pitch in. "Many hands make light work!" This is a really fun event, so first, show up! And second, volunteer to do something! Back by Popular Demand! The Papa Oom-Pah-Pah Band will include accordionist Patsy Hannebrink for a musical performance you won't want to miss. Be prepared to sing along with In München Steht ein Hofbräuhaus! Yes, in German! Karen Herrmann is keeper of the roster for Oktoberfest jobs and food items. We need donations of German potato salad, sauerkraut and, as always, appetizers and desserts. Contact Karen at: herrmann@colfaxnet.com or PAGE 1
Notes from the Board Oktoberfest is set for September 15 th (Saturday) at Seaman s Lodge. We need helpers. John and Renate have been managing our meetings for two years. Dennis Schuetzle is buying and cooking sausages. New members (Yes, we have a few!), step in and give a hand. It is very little time commitment, and I think you ll find it to be fun. Help we need: Kitchen at least 2 Servers at least 3 Set up at least 3 Clean up at least 3 German-American Day: No one has stepped up to be meeting director for German American Day, October 6. Without a Meeting Director (or directors), this is not going to happen. Like our Facebook page! Kristina Wetherbee has been working on our Facebook page, Gold Country German Club. Check it out and give it a!. Your Board would like to receive feedback from you questions, comments, suggestions, criticism, compliments, etc. Send an to any board member. For Western Night, we enjoyed chili and corn bread, and this cornbread casserole was a hit. Some folks asked for the recipe, so here it is, heart-stopping, fattening, of scant redeeming social value, but oh, so good! Kathy's Cornbread Casserole 2 lg. onions, chopped One or two 17 oz. cans creamed corn 6 Tbsp butter 1 (1 lb.) package corn muffin mix 2 eggs 1/2 pint sour cream 2 Tbsp milk 2 c. shredded sharp cheddar cheese Heat oven to 410 F. Butter 13" x 9" pan Sauté onions in butter; Mix eggs & milk 'til blended; Add muffin mix, creamed corn; mix well. Spread batter in pan; spoon onions on top; cover onions with sour cream. Bake 25 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and bake 10 minutes more until cheese has melted. Cool 10 minutes before serving. PAGE 2
Activities German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Herr Erhobenem Zeigefinger at right) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club! Classes are FREE with club membership. The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class members' homes. For more information, call Rebecca at (916) Conversational German Group The German Conversational Class will meet September 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Christel Hermansen's, 150 Sutton Way, Apt 132. Hope to see you there! PLEASE call her if you are coming If anyone would like to join the class, give Christa a call at New members are welcome! The Happy Wanderers Hiking Group Karen Clark taking a refreshing dip in Flora Lake on a recent hike with the Happy Wanderers. She swam across a corner of the lake without losing her hat or dark glasses. Well done, Karen! Twenty-one Happy Wanderers starting out on a 6-mile trek to Flora Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail near Donner Pass, elevation 6,800 feet. The clear, cool air was a welcome break from wildfire smoke and heat at the lower elevations. PAGE 3

Saturday, October 6, German-American Day December -- Christmas Party (how can we even be talking about Christmas in this heat?) Beer, with a flower bouquet, and shakers of salt and pepper. Why not? They could use some cold beer in Deutschland, right about now. Read below: Global Warming Touches Germany July of 2018 was the hottest month in Germany since temperature have been recorded. The extreme heat has caused the water in the Elbe River in the eastern German states of Saxony-Anhaalt and Saxony to drop to its lowest level since Police have collected at least 22 pieces of unexploded ordnance from World War 2 that have been unearthed and exposed in the river bed since water levels have fallen. Another effect of the high heat and drought in Germany is that the wheat harvest is down. Normally, Germany is the second-highest wheat producer in Europe (France is first), but this year, withering heat is causing a 20 percent decrease in crop yield and the worst harvest in 24 years. The grain harvest is below domestic consumption levels, and the cost of the remaining wheat is rising accordingly. PAGE 4

Unsere Leute New Member In Memory of Walter Grob Tom Maher, above, retired after 31 years with PG&E is now one of our Happy Wanderers. His passion for hiking and the outdoors began when he visited Yosemite for the first time, at age 14. Tom loves traveling and recently toured Italy. Other favorite locations are Point Reyes and Point Lobos near Monterey. A long time resident of Grass Valley, now he's a club member. Welcome, Tom! September Birthdays From Christel Denzler: A lady named Paula called me on Sunday afternoon, August 19, to ask if I knew a Walter Grob. I said yes, that he belonged to the GCGA club and played the accordion for us on many occasions, the last time at Christmas. She met him some months ago when he played at their church in Auburn. She was so delighted to hear him play Christmas music on the accordion and befriended him. She found out where he lived and brought him a pot of minestrone soup several times, which he just loved. She even invited him to her house for dinner once. Walter asked her to buy Swiss Bratwurst at Morants, since he no longer felt well enough to drive to Sacramento. Then all of a sudden he no longer answered her phone calls or opened the door. The last time she called, his phone was disconnected. Gery and I and several other people had the same experience. Paula went to every Assisted living facility and hospital in Auburn to find out if he was there, to no avail. I gave her the phone number of one of Walter's son's who lives in El Dorado Hills. She called and found out from Walter's ex-wife, that he died a month ago of bladder cancer. 7 Extreme Hobbies in Germany -- Model Airplanes!? German-made Moki 5-cylinder radial motor, 400cc, 4-stroke. Ja, genau! Above are two German model airplane enthusiasts at Airfield Bad Sasseldorf, Soerst, Germany, with an impressive scale model of an American B-25 Mitchell bomber, such a those used by the Allies during World War II. The radio-controlled (RC) model plane has a 20-foot wingspan; the original airplane's was 68 feet. To maintain authenticity, both in appearance and sound, the model B-25 uses radial motors (Sternmotoren), similar to the one shown above right, in its engine nacelles. These scale model motors are a specialty of the German company, Moki, who offer a complete line of exquisitely designed and manufactured model engines. Unlike their full-sized Pratt and Whitney counterparts, the Moki motors start readily, run smoothly at a wide RPM range, and do not belch blue oil smoke and flames.
