UPDATE Volume 48, Issue 06 AMA CHARTER CLUB 797 June 2016 The SANTA BARBARA RADIO CONTROL MODELERS INC. is incorporated in the State of California as Chapter 797 of the ACADEMY OF MODEL AERONAUTICS (AMA). The purpose of this club is to promote the hobby of model aviation in a safe and enjoyable manner. Regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Santa Barbara Airport Visitor s Center, 45 Hartley Place (off of Hollister at David Love Place). Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Please phone or any officer for further information. President s Message Next Club Meeting 6:30 pm Thursday, June 2, 2016 Santa Barbara Airport Visitors Center 45 Hartley Place, Goleta, CA Help make the monthly meetings as interesting as possible. Contact Jim Kolanek at j.kolanek@cox.net if you can contribute with a "show and tell", a good story, a guest speaker, building tips or disasters, etc. It will be appreciated. Several photographs have been posted on the SBRCM web site showing runway before and after it was cut and site visit activities for those unable to attend on the 15 th. I think everyone agreed that this site has a great deal of potential. As reported in an earlier to the members, the ranch has authorized a 60-day trial period for the members to use the site. The plan for now is to have Russell Chamberlin drag and scrape the runway. Assuming this is completed during the first week in June, the site should be available for use by the second week in June. The runway will remain a dirt strip until after the trial period but it should be usable for the smaller airplanes. Hope to have an update by the next meeting. The ranch does not want to cut the crop so for the time being parking will be restricted to the runway area used for the site visit. A porta-potty will also be set up for member use. Following the trial period, we will proceed with installing a fabric runway for a more permanent flying surface. Many thanks to Tom Wolf, Dale Byers, and TJ Moran for preparing the runway, T.J, Scott Loepkey, and Bernie Rios for putting on the flying demonstration most importantly, Dale for bringing the donuts. As most of you know, long time member Milt McIntosh passed away early last month. Memorial services were held on May 14 th and attended by many SBRCM members. Milt was one of the core members known for his sense of humor and a leader in the true sense. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to get
reacquainted with him after my long hiatus from the club. He will be missed. That s all for now. Hope to see many of you at the next meeting. Jim Kolanek, President Club Meeting Minutes May 5, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 6:35 PM by Vice President Glenn Dorfman. President Jim Kolanek was absent. A total of 12 members and no guests were present. Old Business: Treasurer s Report: The club has $26150 in the checking account. New flying field initiative. Tom Wolf reported on the progress with the Chamberlin Ranch proposal. He went over the details of the upcoming site visit by club membership on Sunday, May 15. The timeline for the event and directions to the site were provided during the discussion. A follow-up to the club membership will be sent out by Tom to provide the details in writing. The sequence of events moving forward are as follows: 1. Site visit and flying demo for Chamberlin family to assess the sound impact to the nearest neighbor. 2. Club membership and Chamberlin family approval to move forward with the project day trial period, flying off of a dirt runway. Russell Chamberlin offered to use the ranch s drag to remove the grass stubble and uneven features (gopher mounds, etc) on the runway, to facilitate flying airplanes with smaller wheels on a temporary basis. 4. Assuming trial period goes well, Chamberlin family approval to proceed with site development including a hard surface runway, tables, storage shed, improved entry road, porta-potty, parking area, etc. GATE fly-off competition: Five club members will be judges for the GATE fly-off competition on May 18 at Isla Vista School. The volunteers are: Dale Byers, Jim Kolanek, Jim Becker, Fred Wudl and Tom Wolf. This competition is between teams from several elementary schools in Goleta, each flying rubber band powered airplanes of their own design, and is the culmination of an aviation education program that Tim Lawton runs in conjunction with the GATE program at the schools. The club has supported this event for many years. Santa Ynez Airport Day, Saturday May 21: The club will have a display area for approximately airplanes at this event. Volunteers to staff the display area and bring airplanes or helicopters for display are needed. More information will follow when it is available. An will be sent to the membership providing details. New Business: There was no new business discussed. Show and Tell: No one brought in anything for show and tell. Program: There was no program for this meeting. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:25 PM. Submitted by: Tom Wolf, SBRCM Secretary GATE Aviation Education Fly-off Competition May 18, 2016 SBRCM once again supported the fly-off competition that culminates Tim Lawton s GATE Aviation Education program that is sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Airport. Students from GATE classes at area elementary schools participate in classroom studies of aviation related topics and then form teams and construct rubber band powered aircraft designs that start from standard Gillows balsa airplanes. At the fly-off, the teams compete in three categories: Design, distance flown and maximum altitude. Each team takes two Page 2
flights with their airplanes and the results are averaged together. Five SBRCM members volunteered to serve as judges at this year s event, which was held at Isla Vista School on May 18. Thanks to Jim Becker, Dale Byers, Jim Kolanek Fred Wudl and Tom Wolf for helping with the judging. The students arrived very excited to compete with their creations, some of which flew quite well and a few not so well, but a good effort was shown for all of the teams. More photos can be found on the club s web site. This team took home the ribbon for the best design. Fred Wudl and Jim Kolanek being briefed by Tim Lawton on the plan for the competition. The first place trophy went to Isla Vista School Santa Ynez Airport Day May 21, 2016 The beginning of what was to be the longest flight of the day: Over 60 feet Page 3 Five SBRCM members participated in this year s Airport Day at the Santa Ynez Airport, manning our display area and bringing the display aircraft. Scott Loepkey had his full-size L-19 Bird Dog on display and the SBRCM display area was adjacent to his airplane. As usual, there was a lot of interest in our aircraft by the kids. Several
people expressed interest in joining the club, including at least one possible youth member. All in all, it was a highly successful event. Thanks to Scott Loepkey for being our airport liaison, and to Jim Kolanek, Bernie Rios, Bob McDermott, and Tom Wolf for manning the display area and bringing the display aircraft. Photos from the event follow. For more photos, visit the club s web site. Jim Kolanek, Bernie Rios, Scott Loepkey and Bob McDermott represented SBRCM at the event. Scott s L-19 Bird Dog was a big attraction. This WACO was simply gorgeous! Not a spot anywhere on the airframe. The kids really liked to sit in the pilot s seat of the L-19. Big grins were seen all day. Page 4

New Projects: There was no submission for this feature this month If you have a new project that you would like to be featured in the Newsletter, send the editor a short description of your project along with a few photographs. The demonstration aircraft and flight crews arrived early to be ready for the flying demo for the Chamberlin family Around and About: Chamberlin Ranch Site Visit TJ Moran hard at work mowing a temporary runway at the Chamberlin Ranch. This work was done in preparation for the club s site visit and flying demo that was held on May 15. Thank you TJ for driving all the way from Ojai to do this Page 5 Club members met several Chamberlin family members. Russell Chamberlin and his son Layne are at the left.
TJ Moran flew his giant Quaker as part of the flying demo. This airplanes very large wheels and short take-off were well-suited for the rough runway conditions. Scott Loepkey flew a standard size Quaker for another flying demo; this one with a four-stroke glow engine. Take-off! TJ s Quaker safely back on the ground after the first demo flight Page 6 The final demo was flown by Bernie Rios with Dyle Byer s electric Ultra Stik
