2 A Message From Our President From the President: "Spring has Sprung!" and summer is close. My garden is in, the rhubarb is flourishing and my husband and I both got big Tom turkeys on our Spring hunt. Life is good! I hope to enlighten and re-enlighten you guys on display case building and adornment at the next meeting. Any tips from seasoned members will also be appreciated. It would be great to have lots of our members display their treasures at the show in September so sign up at the meeting so we can plan ahead. It will hopefully be a good summer for collecting so we can share stories and finds at the club picnic August 4th in Huntley Park, ( besides sampling all that good food!) See you all at the meeting! - Janey Haburchak If you have a story, picture, or announcement for the Yellowstone Deposit, send to 2
3 May Program: Edwards Black Jade Lynn Edwards presented a program on Edwards Black Jade at the May meeting. The program featured a slide show on the discovery and mining of the deposit by Lynn s grandfather, Newt Edwards. Lynn maintains a website at where you can read about the story and see pictures of the mine. Lynn brought several specimens to the meeting for club members to admire. Right - This photo, used with permission from Lynn Edwards shows samples of the Edwards Black Jade Some of the examples of Edwards Black Jade on display at the May meeting. June is a popular month for birthstones, the American Gem Society lists Pearl, Alexandrite and Moonstone, and the Gregorian Birthstone poem says Agate! Who comes with summer to this earth, And owes to June her hour of birth, With ring of agate on her hand Can health, wealth, and long life command. 3
4 Field Trip News Bob Miller About 10 members enjoyed a trip to the Haugian ranch the weekend of May 11th. Good weather made a fun trip. June s trip will be to Glendive in search of fossils and fossil wood, Saturday the 15th the returning Sunday the 16th. Those wanting to go should meet at the old Flying J (now Conoco) at the Johnson Lane exit south of the Interstate, at 6:30 Saturday morning. It will be a three hour drive from there. The trip will be overnight, you can camp or stay in a hotel. It is recommended that you make reservations and have a tent backup due to the spill over of Bakken workers in the area! As in past years, Larry G. Field, 4226 Autumn Lane, behind Zoo MT, will be hosting his annual garage sale the Fri & Sat ( 9-5, Aug 2 & 3) immediately before the annual rock club picnic making it a three day rock event weekend for those that are interested. In addition to the normal rock hobby related items, this year's sale will feature lots of jewelry making suppliescabs, chains, beads, connecting rings, earrings, hearts, crosses & a whole lot more. Most jewelry making supplies featured in rock hobby catalogs will be available at this sale. 4 Junior Club News Laura Wilson At our last meeting, speakers from the Bureau of Land Management shared information regarding rules when rock and fossil hunting on BLM land. They brought several samples of rocks and fossils with them. We were very impressed with the skull cast of a "short faced bear". The Jr. Club thoroughly enjoyed the speakers. We plan to go on several field trips over the summer. Plans are in the making for visiting the mining museum in Butte, Mt. and to look for sapphires at Gem Mountain in Phillipsburg, Mt. as a group in July. We are open to suggestions for other locations in those areas for rock hunting. The Jr. Club, wish to send our thanks to those of the adult Gem and Mineral Club for their generous donations of their time and rock/fossils samples. It is truly appreciated. Federation Show 2013 Butte, MT - August 9-11, 2013 NFMS 75 th Anniversary Show Presented by: Butte Mineral and Gem Club Location: Butte Civic Center 1340 Harrison Avenue Butte, MT Hours: Fri 9 5, Sat 10 5, Sun 10 5 Cost: Adults $5, Seniors $4, Students $3, Under 10 free if accompanied by an adult. 26+ Dealers with 100+ exhibits Field trips every day, Silent Auction, Speakers
5 Destination, Phillipsburg, Mt Travel past Anaconda on the Pintler Scenic Route and you ll come to Phillipsburg, county seat of Granite County. Registered as a town in 1867, incorporated in 1890, and all but deserted after the Silver Crash of 1893, the 2010 census shows the population at 820. Nowadays, the main attractions are ghost towns, shopping, and the Rock Creek Sapphire deposit. Gem Mountain, Opal Mountain Gems, and Sapphire Gallery offer sifting ore for sapphires right in town, and if you work up a thirst or appetite, you can find good eats and cold beer in town! A great way to spend an afternoon is rambling around Granite ghost town, with it s ghost walk trail and remnants of the large Miner s Union Hall, famed for the Northwest s Finest Dance Floor. Head on up the Skalkaho Pass to Gem Mountain mine for a fun day hunting sapphires in the mine run ore. They supply all the necessary equipment. All this happens in some spectacular country. Last Miners Union Hall calf, we decided to head on home! spring, as we turned out of the lane from the mine, a young moose faced down our Ford Escape for a minute before turning tail and bleating for momma. When she came out of the thicket beside the road to see who was molesting her A necklace featuring 7 Gem Mt stones Above are some Gem Mountain sapphires 5
