The Museum will be several hundred feet east and across from a feed store. Museum building number 611. Museum signage can be seen on Highway 2. Northwest Two Cylinder EXPO VIII Review Well, 2010 EXPO VIII has come and gone and our goal of reaching 200 Deere entries was reached with the official tally on Saturday morning of 168 John Deere tractors, 6 crawlers, 17 lawn, garden tractors and 7 stationary engines totaling 198. The unofficial count on Saturday noon was four additional tractors and another six lawn and garden tractors. The John Deere M series was well represented with an ample supply of Ms, several MC crawlers, MT wide front, MT single front wheel and standard MT tricycles. Integrated M series implements included plows, loader, disk, cultivator with fertilizer attachment and spring tooth harrow. The John Deere M series led the parade each day. We had bragging rights in having Ted Spoelstra s 1923 Spoker D and GP Lindeman orchard crawler which are the oldest Deere tractor and crawler known. Both tractors were driven in the daily parade by Alan Brinson. Other crowd pleasers were Del Bosman s newly restored John Deere W stationary engine, recently restored by Dave DeGraff and John Corbin s John Deere B on aftermarket mud/snow tracks. Maurice Beld elevated Del Bosman s John Deere D on four coke bottles and ran the tractor in gear. This was a 1930 s marketing technique by John Deere to demonstrate how smooth the model D ran. Jerry Senner s John Deere stationary baler was used to bale straw from the threshing area. Ken Langel exhibited his two Waterloo Boy tractors which are two of the nicest restorations in the country. Harold Eastbury displayed his scale model Waterloo Boy along side Ken s two tractors. Another popular exhibit was Schuh Farms John Deere G running an ice cream maker. Tom Jensen was the official ice cream master making 25 gallons of high butter fat ice cream for the show. The donation bucket brought in $583 profit for the club. The John Deere pedal tractor ticket sales cleared $228 thanks to Judy Cookson and Larry McPhail. Winning the oldest exhibitor award was Ted Spoelstra, 92 years young from Forks, Washington and the exhibitor traveling the farthest was Steve Ebe from Palo Cedro, California, 700 miles. Gary Friend managed the slo race each day in front of the parade announcer s stand. A potluck dinner was held Thursday evening in the campground picnic area. Friday was a busy day with Greg Greenfield giving a information packed seminar on sheet metal buffing and color sanding. Kreig McBride was the official EXPO photographer taking pictures of all the Deeres as they moved through the Friday parade. If you did not pick up your free photo or if you wish to order more copies Kreig indicated that he would like to accommodate your wishes within reason. The special John Deere only pull was held Friday afternoon. Saturday, nationally renown two cylinder expert Albert Ulrich gave a informative seminar on John Deere two cylinder diesel issues and repair. Club member Larry McPhail did an outstanding job of announcing the tractors during the daily parade and promoting the John Deere pedal tractor raffle. A big tip of the green and yellow hat to all the club officers, directors, club members and especially the Rainier Two Cylinder Club for their help in organizing and conducting Northwest Two Cylinder EXPO VIII. The show co directors, Greg Greenfield, Paul Hieb, Alerd Johnson and Glen Pasemko appreciated your support! ajohnson

President s Message One of our busiest summer parade and show seasons ever, but much fun. Our caravan trip to Lopez Island was a great success and a thank you to everyone who helped. Putting on EXPO 8 was a big challenge but everything came together thanks to Alerd Johnson and Greg Greenfield. They put a lot of time in and it came out great. Also thanks to Del Bosman and Maurie Beld for setting the old John Deere D on coke bottles, very nice display. Two more thank yous to Tom Jensen for making ice cream, it was so good, plus a great fund raiser for the club. Also Krieg Mc Bride for taking all the pictures. When everyone helps, the show comes together. Our next meeting will be October 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Monroe fair ground Museum. See you at the meeting. Paul Hieb, President Going Back to Mount Pleasant Iowa The annual Old Thresher s Reunion in Mount Pleasant Iowa is one of those famous antique equipment and machinery shows that every serious collector would like to attend. Last year several of our members attended the Rollag show in North Dakota and this year a group spearheaded by Maurice Beld RVed back to Mount Pleasant in south east Iowa. Marlen and Audrey Knutson, Paul and Jan Hieb, Gary and Donna Friend and Loren and Joan Dahl left Skagit County on August 26 for the 1950 mile RV trip to Iowa. An early casualty was Gary Friend s fifth wheel trailer which needed some major frame welding before continuing on the trip the next day. The group joined up with Maurice and Irene Beld in South Dakota and continued to Des Moines, Iowa where they met Alan and Loreen Brinson and Leon and Carol Meyers. Once the RVers arrived in Mount Pleasant they were joined by Ken and Ester Korthuis. The second day at the Old Thresher s reunion they were joined by Jim and Cheryl Rowland and Jack and Roselee Crane. Since Mount Pleasant is a small town, spectators usually camp on the 60 acres of campgrounds near the show grounds. Upwards of 3000 campers use the campgrounds during the show week. Camping fees are $25 for the four day show with no hook ups but water is available. Admission fees are $12 a day or $20 for the entire show, September 2 thru 6.. Of special interest to our group was the featured tractor being John Deere. An excellent display of over 200 two cylinder Deeres was exhibited with many rare models. Some New Generation John Deeres were also exhibited in the John Deere area. Paul Hieb noted that the bulk of the Deere models were medium horse power models that were commonly used on row crop farms in the 1930 s thru 1960 s. Few were big tractors such as Rs or 830s. In addition to tractors, the show included antique machinery and equipment used on the mid west farms, lumber and transportation industries. The show has one of the largest displays of steam tractors highlighted with a huge 110 Case steam tractor 100 years old. A functioning display of the Midwest Electric Railway and Midwest Central Railroad was a permanent attraction. Antique cars, trucks, tractors, hit and miss engines and stationary engines; both gas and steam were on display. Active displays included a saw mill, veneer mill, carousel, horse pull, tractor pull and daily parade. The night activities include the steam engine spark show and professional entertainment with singer Roy Clark. Lots of food and craft venders were available to keep both the men and women entertained. The admission price was $12 a day or $20 for the complete show. After the Old Threshers Reunion several of the group traveled to Branson, Missouri for a few days more of entertainment before the slow trek back to the Pacific Northwest.

Separating the Chaff from the Grain C2CC Caravan 2010 happened on July 24 with another fun filled, successful tractor drive on Lopez Island. 11 tractors left the Anacortes Airport and took the Washington State Ferry journey to sunny Lopez Island where they were joined by several other Island Deeres. A big thanks to Island hosts Jim Smith, Ken Rose, Bob Burt and Phil Weinheimer. The Island hosts continue to fine tune the caravan to provide a little more social time and a little less road time. In excess of 60 people attended this year s event. Pictures are posted on the Cascadetwocylinderclub.org web site and will be at the Holiday general meeting. The rumor is that the C2CC Caravan 2011 will be touring Samish Island and the Bayview Agriculture area of Skagit County. Belleville Threshing Show threshed on Saturday August 21 at a new location on the Cook Road. This is one of the most fun hands on activities the club does. A good variety of cars, trucks, tractors and implements from the days of threshing grain. Activities ranged from feeding the threshing machine to baling straw. Good weather and ample help made short work of the available grain bundles. Potluck was held after the work was done. Oscar says that the binding usually takes place on the second Saturday of August and the threshing is done on the third Saturday each year.. Oscar says he always needs more help with the binding so put this on your calendar for Thanks to Oscar and Nils Lagerlund for organizing this part of Skagit Valley history. The 15th Annual Anacortes Antique Machinery Show was held on September 11 and attended by club members Loren Dahl, Rick Kiser, Dave Yount, Harold Eastbury, Ken Langel, Kreig McBride, Bob Folk and Alerd Johnson. The show enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with a variety of tractors, engines, motorcycles, cars, trucks, boats and logging equipment displays. Exhibitors receive a high quality brass plaque or belt buckle. Good quality displays. Saturday, September 25 was a busy weekend with Gary Reineke, Bob Folk, Marlen Knutson and Harold Eastbury attending the Stanwood- Camano Harvest Jubilee in Stanwood. A humorous event happed in the parking lot when a large lock washer and nut was found between two club member s trailers. After some time of checking the tractors for a missing nut and lock washer, the Deeres were driven to the display area where one tractor was used to pull the people wagons. When the day was over, the tractor was unhitched from the wagon and the hitch ball fell off the drawbar. The ah ha moment occurred. Paul Hieb, Phil Smoots, Alerd Johnson, Dean Flaig and Loren Dahl exhibited at the Down Town (Continued on page 4)
