On The Road Again Our merry band of RVers launched their 2015 caravan on August 23. This year s group included Paul and Jan Hieb, Loren and Joan Dahl, Gary and Donna Friend, Allan and Lorene Brinson and Jim and Cheryl Rowland. The destination this year was the 50 Years of Progress at Rantoul, Illinois, 130 miles south of Chicago. This biennial show is staged at the old decommissioned ( )Chanute Air Force base and is scheduled every other year. The show grounds are so large that a golf cart ($100 a day rental) is needed to move around the various exhibits. Friday attendance reached 30,000 spectators. Other than static displays, planting and harvesting are demonstrated each of the four days. The vintage agriculture power included horses (hay), gas, diesel and steam tractors. Horse pulls, tractor pulls, daily parade and a caravan are featured. The event displays the largest 120 foot by 65 foot United States flag in the world. After two days of the 50 Years of Progress show, the Hiebs and Rowlands traveled to Chicago to visit Gordon Hieb and family. The remainder of the group traveled to Davenport, Iowa to visit the various John Deere company attractions. A couple of visits to the famous Machine Shed restaurant were in order. After regrouping, the travelers started the slow trek back home. The Dahl s, who were traveling in their car, starting west early so Loren could exhibit at the September 12 th Anacortes Antique Machine Show. High lights were the Amana Colonies, Corn Palace and Glacier Park with a drive through the Highway to the Sun. Another tractor show in Kalispell, Montana was visited. The group arrived home on September 14, two weeks and one day after leaving Washington State. John Deere Candy Store Have you ever been in the candy department, and couldn t make up your mind which candy bar to choose? Well that s what happened to Dale and I when we saw Ben Rust s collection in Winthrop. Luckily we both didn t want the same tractor. Some didn t run when we purchased them, but they all run now, after cleaning carburetors, and some new gas and spark plugs. The collection included; 7 John Deeres; slant dash AN, unstyled AR, B, unstyled BO, unstyled D, D, G, Farmall A, Fordson. Also in the mix was a Chev car. After Dale had some issues with his pickup, Gray Friend and Gordy Wiren helped transport all of the tractors and car over the mountain. We have now decided which ones we are going to keep for ourselves, and are now offering the rest for sale. Details for each are in the Green & Yellow Wand Ads. Jim Sorensen

The Veteran s Day parade will be November 7 in Burlington. Contact Loren Dahl. We will move our Christmas Pot-luck dinner one week earlier this year to December 5, the first Saturday of the month. Summary of Summer Events Sedro Woolley Caravan July 18 Good weather and a good turn out with 21 tractors. An extra bonus was a stop at Dale Robertson s shop to see his collection of tractors, cars and trucks. Dale s classic Kenworth petroleum truck was in the final stages of restoration. Puget Sound Antique Tractor and Machinery Show July 29 August 1 80 degrees and warmer each day of the show. 75 plus Deeres in the show grounds. Attendance was a little lower this year but a good variety of machinery and trucks. The Slow Race and the daily parade were popular activities with the Deere crowd. Belleville Threshing -August 15 Four wagons of barley were threshed by 1:00 pm. Cloudy but no rain with temperatures in the low 70s. Antique tractors, equipment, cars and trucks were exhibited and operated. Frank Orr and son accompanied by Judy Cookson provided lunch music entertainment. A big thanks to Oscar and Nels for continuing this historical hands on event. Anacortes Antique Machinery Show -September 12 The 20th year and the last for this show on a beautiful day. Models were the feature of the show. Good representation by our club. We will miss this one day antique agriculture, logging and marine machinery display. Separating the Chaff from the Grain 2016 Caravan Our club has been invited back to Lopez Island for our caravan next year. So, Saturday, July 16 is the date to put on your 2016 calendar. The Washington State Ferry system will take reservations so it will be important that participants commit early for this event. No host lunch and dinner will be in town and some refreshments may be provided by the club. This is our most popular caravan location! More details next year. Future of the Anacortes Antique Machinery Show? The leadership of this very successful show has aged out and brought the event to a close last month. A group of our members are concerned about losing another tractor event and we will be discussing the future of this show at our October meeting. We will be inviting representatives from this show and Branch 26 leaders to discuss future possibilities. Donated John Deere Model M tractor The Club received a donated JD model M tractor that can be used to stimulate some classic Deere interest in the youth. Several of our board members are looking for a worthy young person who would bring the tractor up to show standards and exhibit. This tractor would not be able to be sold.

This will more or less coincide with the 100th anniversary of the John Deere dealership in Lynden. It also leads nicely into 2017 where John Deere will be the featured tractor at the Lynden show. The John Deere dealership was once located in the city museum building. During the summer a John Deere model M tractor was given to the club by the Shadle family of the Bay View area. The idea is to give the tractor to a young man with stipulation that he get it running and show it a some future events. More discussion at our next meeting.
