Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at the Marion County Fire Station, 300 Cordon Road NE, in Salem, Oregon. In attendance were 41 members and 7 guests. Immediately after the call to order, Tom Quintal introduced Jeff Murray who was invited to speak by our program committee. Jeff spoke about the Missoula Floods and the locations of erratic boulder deposits in the Willamette Valley. To recap, Jeff explained to the members that a glacier advanced into Idaho causing an ice dam which blocked the Clark Fork River. This created a lake which extended into Montana. The water was estimated to be over 2000 feet deep. Leaks occurred at the dam which weakened it and sent water and ice into Washington and Oregon at 65 mph, carving a path. Most of the water went out to the Pacific through the gorge. But it also created a lake filling the Willamette Valley as high as 300 feet above sea level. With the ice came boulders that fell from the ice and were deposited throughout the valley. For more information on this subject you can go to or The members thank Jeff for this great program. For the March program, Chief Roy Harl of Marion County Fire District #1 will go over some first aid and give a tour of the station s ambulance medical unit. This will let members know what they can do and what happens if a member needs emergency help. Meeting Minutes from the previous meeting were approved a motion to ed as written in the February newsletter. Treasurer Marshal Phares gave the Treasurers report which was also approved as read. Marshal handed the floor over to Lloyd Bridgman to discuss the information investigated on in regards to the Willamette Valley Miners investing in CD s. Lloyd handed out some figures and after some discussion there was a motion to invest $2500 in a CD with State Farm Bank for 12 months at a rate of 4.88%. The motion was approved Paul Messersmith told the members that the maps and the instructions to the new claims are complete. If they are not in this newsletter and you have a desire to go before the maps come out, contact Paul. His phone number is on the front page of the newsletter. The committee is in the process of reworking the existing claims package in a similar format as the new Dad s Creek claims. The Walker Creek map is also still being worked on. The claim committee hasn t made it to Dad s Creek to post the signs yet. The dates for this work party have not been set up yet. If you would like to go down Thursday Sunday or just to help for a day, contact Paul. Do some mining and some clearing, maybe an informal outing, any help would be appreciated. Paul talked about the new WPGF General Permit 600 which each member with an old 600 permit should have received in the mail. This permit is for high banking and is free unless you move more than 1500 cubic yards per year. It can be confusing. Paul stated that you should mark private as your legal status. Facility Contacts: you are the responsible official and put same for facility contact. Then comes the trick questions. For most, Number 5 should be seepage and evaporation thru disbursement. Next, ground water impact: none. Surface water impact: none and finally, vegetation should not be disturbed, hope that helps.the Eastern Oregon Miner s Association will be having a raffle to help with their legal funds. They are challenging the new Oregon Suction Dredge Mining Permit (700 pm). With many prizes ranging from an ATV 4x4 to coins, it will be great for all members. The raffle is being called the EOMA 2007 Mother of all Raffles and will be held July 22, All prizes, entry forms and rules can be found at or This ruling affects all miners so please help and encourage friends and family to help also. Members motioned to purchase $ worth of tickets, as a club, to help out. The motion was approved. 5 Directions to WVM#2, WVM#3, WVM#4, WVM#5 and WVM#6 Dad s Creek From the Glendale Exit This is the recommended short route to Dad s Creek Traveling South on I-5, take exit 80 at Glendale. At the stop sign, set your trip indicator to 0, go straight across the intersection toward Glendale and proceed for 2.6 miles. There will be an old gas station on your left. Turn right onto Brown Road. Go a short distance, over the Cow Creek Bridge and turn left onto Ruben Road (which becomes Cow Creek Road). You will travel through a mill property for a short distance. Continue on. At approximately 11.8 miles you will come to Road Number on the right. Turn onto this road Dad s Creek Road. Please consult the attached claims map for more details as to the relative location of each of the five (5) WVM claims on Dad s Creek. WVM#3 (ORMC #159208) is a 40 acre claim and is a short distance upstream on Dad s Creek Road just after you make the turn you should see a Federal Mining Claim sign on a tree to your right. The upper boundary is marked with a Federal Mining Claim sign on a tree across from a spur road that veers off to the left with a small tributary stream running beside it. There are three trails to access the claim which are difficult to detect walking the road will reveal the trails. Access is easiest at the upper end of the claim. WVM#2 (ORMC #159207) is a 20 acre claim and is approximately 2.1 miles further up Dad s Creek Road. You ll come to a very large borrow pit. A Federal Mining Claim sign for the lower extent of WVM#2 is on a tree across from the upper end of the borrow pit. This claim lies next to and west of WVM#4. WVM#4 (ORMC #161029) is a 20 acre claim situated to the east of and next to WVM#2. Its upper reaches include the confluence of a small tributary stream coming in from the east and a small portion of Dad s Creek. A spur road takes off to the right from the main road near the upper portion of the claim and ends in a meadow. There are a number of nice camping spots in the meadow area. WVM#5 (ORMC #161030) is a 40 acre claim that includes a section of both the tributary stream flowing into WVM#4 and a goodly stretch of Dad s Creek north or upstream from WVM#4. The western boundary of this claim pretty much follows the road and creek. WVM#6 (ORMC #161031) is a 40 acre claim that lies north and generally west of WVM#5. The northern boundary is very near where the road deteriorates and Y s into two unimproved spur roads. NOTE: At about the 1 mile mark you will see a small, older Airstreams camper. This belongs to Tom Smith Nugget Farm claim. It would be appropriate to notify Tom if you re going to work the upstream claims in that he relies on Dad s Creek for his domestic water supply. The dogs are harmless and Tom likes to talk and knows a lot about mining in the area. Douglas County Sheriff s Office Number:
