Effective as of last Friday Dottie and I have stepped down as the chapter directors. This has nothing to do with the outcome of the ICOY selection, the chapter, any person in the chapter, or GWRRA in general. We are stepping down for entirely personal reasons. Wesley and Cindy Neal have accepted the position of Chapter Director. Please join me in Congratulating them. I look forward to staying a part of Chapter Y and riding with everyone. 2 September 2016 Page 2 Wes & Cindy Neal Y s Assistant Chapter Directors Hello Chapter Y! I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer, lots of family time. Now it looks like the weather is going to give us a riding break before it starts getting cold outside. Wes and I are looking forward to seeing everyone on some rides with us. We have a couple of great trips coming up where we always have tons of fun! Wings over Smokies is upcoming, and a month later we will have our Fall Color Ride to Cherokee. I'm looking forward to hanging out with friends and playing some games. Some great dinner rides are also headed our way. Remember to watch your s for spontaneous rides that are always fun...let's go ride and enjoy the fun together. Cindy & Wes Neal, Y s ACDs Leonard & Mikki Costanzo Y s Ride Coordinators & Assistant Chapter Directors Hello, Chapter Y participants. *See more photos of Len s trip on Page 11 of this issue. * I am back from the open spaces of Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. I have lots of pictures and stories to be shared. I had a flashback from years back when we took pictures with our Polaroid cameras, 35 millimeter cameras...and how many of you remember the Brownie cameras? Friends could not wait to see you pull in your driveway and invite them over for show and tell. It would turn out to be a fun time in the afternoon and perhaps an evening BBQ supper looking at your photos and hearing of your experiences as you traveled! Well, I ll still be excited to share my adventures with my Chapter Y Family...but will we have to wait until the Chapter Gathering to see my pictures and stories of WING DING and the FUN that was enjoyed? No, we do not. With all the new technology that we have today, we do not have to wait due to Facebook, Twitter, Facetime, Walgreens Photo Sharing, etc. At the beginning I was slow to warm up to the Facebook scene but I have since adapted to it. Yes, I am now guilty of posting or checking in to see what others are sharing after a particular event. Perhaps you have already seen my posts, pictures or even videos. If you have, you are a step above the rest. Here is another aspect to consider when you go to a distant rally, convention or vacation spot. For instance, the Tiptons and the Malones took a trip across our country earlier this year and shared lots of pictures and stories of special places they visited. Thanks so much, Larry, Sandy, Tim and Betsy. When going on a trip with friends or with a group versus going solo, you experience different views of travel. While together you enjoy the ride, scenery, and the weather. Individually you might notice the smells of damp fields in the early morning, the hot pavement as the day progresses, the exhaust fumes from cars and trucks, and don t forget the smells of the pastures filled with cows or the chicken houses as you travel down the road. You will notice pleasant as well as unpleasant odors. When traveling alone to a faraway destination, you tend to do a lot of thinking and pondering. Some smells cause you to see something in a different way. For instance, I can smell a car or truck a distance away and know that they are smoking. Sure enough, sometimes they throw that cigarette stub right out the window. Or...there might a really different smell, a smoky kind of smell...and yes, you guessed it...marijuana. When you pass these cars, you can see them passing around a joint. Well, let s just say smells can certainly bring up lots of thoughts past and present, good and bad. Thanks for reading! 4 September 2016 Page 4 Rider Education Division TN-Y s Chapter Educator Colleen Edgell Hello, Y. As most of you know Arnold and I have had to quit riding. This was a hard decision to make and a long time letting the bike go, but we did sell our bike last week. I cannot say that I did not cry. Don t worry though... we are not going anywhere. We will still continue to participate, Chapter Y. Over the last eleven years of participating with the Chapter we have taken every safety course GWRRA has to offer. Everyone that rides should take them. Why? you ask. The courses are taught for your safety, your co-rider s safety and the safety of people with whom you ride. Below is quick review of one of the courses. I ve simplified a few rules to always observe when group riding. (Take this course and the rules will be taught with much more detail.) 1. Ride your own ride. 2. Be considerate of the other riders. Remember the two second rule. 3. Follow the Road Captain s instructions. 4. Keep your eyes on the road and report to the group any problems that you see. (The Road Captain and Tail Gunner can only do so much.) 5. If you haven't taken the Road Captain's course, I strongly suggest that you do. This course will help you to understand this important position for the safety of the group. Ride safe, ride often. Colleen Edgell, Y s Rider Educator Tim & Betsy Malone Y s Historians Hello, Chapter Y. The hot heat of Summer is almost gone and there are a lot of great Chapter Y opportunities to enjoy some nice rides! 6 September 2016 Page 6 Larry & Sandy Tipton Y s Membership Enhancement Coordinators & Y s 2016 Couple of the Year Hello Chapter Y! Wow! Have we been busy having FUN! One thing for sure, Chapter Y is not a lazy chapter. We have had participants going everywhere! It s hard to keep up with where everyone is and the FUN they are having. We would like to say how much we enjoyed hosting the Chapter Picnic at our house last month. We were having a great time until the storm hit, canopies started flying and apples started falling! Thankfully, it was after we had eaten and after our corn hole tournament. (I realize I may be just a little bit competitive, but I am not the only one!) I am sorry that the horseshoe tournament was cut short though! Thank you to all that came and brought food and, most of all, shared a lot of FUN with us! It took all of us to make the day the success that it was! THANK YOU to those who represented us at Wing Ding this year...especially to Dottie and Allen for their participation in the International Couple of the Year Selection. We know it was a tough competition and you spent a lot of time and effort preparing and participating. We appreciate the example you set for all of us in Chapter Y and we are very proud to have you as our Chapter Directors. For this month s Spotlight on Participants we will learn a little more about Suzi Adams, our Thursday Dinner Ride (TDR) Coordinator! When did you start riding a motorcycle? Suzi: I started riding in My dad rode a bike and so did my sisters. I wanted to learn to ride so I took the Motorcycle Course at Bumpus Cycles....So you have been riding about 11 years. And since you didn t grow up riding motorcycles, you would have had a little anxiety when you signed up for the course at Bumpus Cycles. Suzi: Yes, I was a little afraid, but after I dropped the bike the first time, I was okay. I dropped the bike three times during the course! When I received my certificate, I also got a gift from the instructor... A new set of light covers for the broken tail lights on the bike I had been riding! I understand how you would be glad for the experience of knowing how it would feel to drop your bike, knowing how to pick it up and how to move on. How many bikes have you owned? Suzi: Yes, I was glad to get that experience behind me. I have owned four motorcycles since The one I like the most is the one I have now. It is a 2013 Harley Sportster. You seem really comfortable on your bike and you look like you are having a great time riding it. What is the longest trip you have made so far? Suzi: I am very comfortable on it. The longest trip I have taken so far is to Indianapolis. How did you learn about GWRRA? Suzi: I learned about GWRRA from Becky Griffin. We work together at State Farm and she would share with me about her life with GWRRA. I joined GWRRA and Chapter Y in So, for being a fairly new member, you have really jumped in and become very active with the Chapter. You have been a blessing to Chapter Y for sure. You are an inspiration to all of us ladies in Chapter Y, with owning your own bike and riding it so well. Also, on behalf of Chapter Y, I would like to thank Suzi for organizing our Thursday Night Dinner Rides (TDRs). The rides have carried us near and far and every ride has afforded us the opportunity to enjoy fellowship with each other. One thing is for sure, we have not lacked in having FUN this passed month! We have had Thursday night dinner rides, spontaneous weekend rides, and rides have that have taken several of our members out west! But, soon all of our ducks will be back in a row and we will be traveling, mostly together, starting with our Wings across Tennessee ride to St. Jude Children s Research Hospital, and then east to the North Carolina Rally and then on our Fall Color Ride, which is my favorite! If you are like Larry and I, you are looking forward to those rides and all the FUN activities in between. As the Fall temps arrive and we get a break from the heat, let s enjoy all the rides we can! Larry & Sandy Tipton Chapter Y's MECs & Y s Couple of the Year 2016 A special THANKS to our participants who submit articles and pictures or post photos on Walgreen s site. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of some valuables. She yelled, STOP! Acts 2:38. The burglar stopped in his tracks, dropped the goods, and put his hands in the air. The woman had speed-dialed the police station and given a quick explanation. The police in her neighborhood responded quickly and cuffed the burglar. One policeman asked, Why did you just stand there? The lady simply yelled a scripture to you. Scripture? replied the burglar. She said she had an AX and TWO 38 s. Moral: Knowing scripture can save your life in more ways than one.

10 September 2016 Page 10 Happy Grandparent s Day! How Children Perceive Grandparents *Submitted by Glenn Kilgore* 1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" 3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" 4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" 5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. 6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." 7. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" 8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa.. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights." 9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised... "Mine says I'm 4 to 6.." 10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting." she said. "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'." 11. Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. 'It means carrying a child." 12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "They use him to keep crowds back," said one child. "No," said another. "He's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants." 13. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport." 14. Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good things, but I don't get to see him enough to get as smart as him! 15. My Grandparents are funny. When they bend over, you hear gas leaks and they blame their dog.

12 September 2016 Page 12 *Shared from GWRRA s Insight Focus Newsletter August 2016* Epilogue to a Crash In last month s article for Insight, I described a serious motorcycle crash I was involved in on June 10th in Hillsborough County, FL. I was subsequently hospitalized for two days and my 2012 GL1800 was heavily damaged. All as a result of a careless and inattentive driver who violated my right-of-way when he abruptly changed lanes into my path of travel from a left turn storage lane he'd been occupying. The driver was charged with improper lane change. As we've all heard before, having the right-of-way doesn't matter much if you are "dead right". I have to say that my insurance company (Dairy Land) did a marvelous job of taking care of their financial obligation while Medicare and Humana took care of my medical expenses. As of this writing, I have not had to pay any out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the crash. Total repair costs to the bike were just over $10,000. Since then, my bike was rebuilt and repaired at Gables Honda in Wesley Chapel. I picked it up on August 2nd and they did a fantastic job making it like new again. I really enjoyed the ride home. It seemed like a long wait, but the bike had lots of custom paint and other accessories which needed repair or replacement. I was fortunate in locating a expert motorcycle custom painter in Inverness, FL (Patrick Busby) who completely restored the damaged pieces and perfectly repainted them. He was even able to repair some pieces which had artwork on them, filling scratches and blemishes with fiberglass and blending the paint so as to make the ABS panels look like they'd never been damaged. My injuries (four broken ribs and a punctured lung) are slowly but steadily healing. I hope to be able to ride to Wing Ding. That will all depend upon my physical condition in about ten days to two weeks and how well the bike is performing after all the repairs. I have a new Arai helmet and new GWRRA riding jacket to replace the ones damaged in the crash. I'm about as ready to ride as I can be. It's all up to the healing process now. Please remember, All the Gear All The Time! This could have been a fatal crash or much more serious injuries from which I might have never recovered. That riding gear is what saved me, no doubt about it. Bob & Nan Shrader GWRRA s Deputy Directors A, N

Man, did we have a crowd or what? There were members from Chapters A, A2, B, E, O and Y. Hope I did not miss anyone. Chapter E won the largest Chapter outside their District, Tennessee folks won the money, and grand prize, and the trailer they gave away. Tennessee also did very well with the light show and bike show. Thanks to all of those who went up to Cave City and helped Kentucky have a good District Rally. The weather was nasty with a lot of rain. I applauded all those who rode up on their bikes. Wing Ding is next up. I hope to see you there. Tennessee has been assigned registration again. We are set to work Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. If you are going to be at Wing Ding, we are going to need your help working this assignment. We did not set up a work schedule but ask that you come by and set up a time to help us. We really appreciate all that you can do. Patti and Vickie have been working hard to get the Winter Event set and ready to go. Our new MEC s, Dennis and Anne Greer, have also started off working hard to make this a great event. We would like to encourage each chapter COY to attend, even better we would like to see them join in the selection process. We would like to see all our chapters there to celebrate the new year and welcome our new District Couple of the Year. They have put together a great program and there should be something fun for everyone. The Region N Rally will be in Johnson City on November 4th & 5th. This will be the first Region Rally in about eight years. This will include the Region COY Selection. Come and support Leonard and Mikki as they try for the Region N COY. We know they will make us proud, let s give them our support. Flyers for this event are on the District web page and in the newsletter. The Region OPS meeting will there also on November 3rd before the Region rally. Our District OPS meeting is November 19 at the New Heart Christian Church in Lebanon. Location is just off of Highway 109 at 49 Business Park Drive. We have been told that there are changes to the financial report for I encourage all the CDs and Treasurers be there for this update. If you attend this Fall, Feasible there will be a seminar covering this change. I don t know what else is going to change until we complete the Region OPS Meeting on November 3rd. I just want to get this out to everyone early so you can make plans to be there. We have blocked rooms at the Sleep Inn 105 East Gate Court just off I-40. They have made rates of $74.00 a night for king size beds and $79.00 a night for double beds. Be sure and mention GWRRA when you call. If you are headed to Wing Ding, be safe. We will see you there. If not, we will see you at the North Carolina Wings Over the Smokies, if not there possibly the Virginia Rally in the Valley, if not then we hope to see you at the Region N Rally, or at the Wings across Tennessee. If you are unable to attend any of these we will see you at a chapter gathering. I need to add one additional thing in this message. If you should see Vickie Hurt, be sure and ask her about the snake. While in Kentucky Vickie told this story about a snake in the house. I will tell it as it was told to me, truth nothing but the truth. Vickie was doing laundry at her home when she just happened to look back down the hallway to see something laying in the floor near her little dog. It was a snake. She immediately went into action. The snake was a copper-rattler-boa-anaconda somewhere between one foot to 30 feet depending on where you were standing. The snake was between her and the phone. Vickie went into action and dumped a load of dirty clothing on the snake, grabbed the dog and left the building and called Troy. Troy told her to go back into the house and keep an eye on where the snake was located. Vickie went back into the house and found the snake slithering under her dresser... The dresser where her unmentionables are located. Troy s father came with a hoe. They pulled out the dresser drawer filled with Vickie s unmentionables, and low and behold was the snake. So to make a long story short, Vickie killed a snake in her panties. I am sure I have told this story as it was told to me, I just cannot remember who was wearing the panties, the snake or Vickie. Oh, yes, if you are approached by Renee Thomas and asked to taste this, be very very suspect. She got me in Kentucky and man oh man was it bad, just as I thought it could not get worse, Max asked me if I wanted a mint to get the taste out of my mouth. Well, the mint was the stronger of the two. As I was gasping Renee offered me a drink of water, as I was drinking down I realized that I was drinking the dog s water cup. Watch these two very carefully. Ride safe and have fun. Gary & Patti Hamilton Tennessee District Directors

16 September 2016 Page 16 We like to think of September as the month of homegrown apples. Here are a few recipes for this fruit of the season: Apple Cinnamon Waffles *Shared from Old Farmer s Almanac Website* 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 eggs, separated 1/4 cup melted butter, plus extra for waffle iron 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 sweet apple, such as Fuji or Gala, cored & grated Preheat waffle iron. In a bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Set aside. In another bowl, whisk together egg yolks, milk, butter and vanilla. Stir egg yolk mixture into dry mixture until combined (some lumps are fine). Gently fold in egg whites, then fold in apple. Brush melted butter over hot waffle iron. Spoon batter into waffle iron and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until nicely browned. Recipe makes 4 servings. Pie Crust *Shared from Old Farmer s Almanac Website* 2 heaping cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 large mixing spoons Crisco (about 1/2 cup) 1/3 to 1/2 cup iced water as needed Blend the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Then, using a pastry blender, cut in the shortening until dough forms small pea-sized and still crumbly lumps. (This usually takes about 60 quick strokes.) Spoon a hole in the center of the flour-shortening mixture and add 1/3 cup water. With the spoon, fold in the water, adding more if needed, until the dough forms a ball that just holds together when squeezed. Roll out the bottom crust. Lightly flour the board and rolling pin, spoon out half of the dough, fashioning it into a rounded cake. Working from the center, roll out a round crust as thin as possible about 1/8 inch. Carefully drape it in the bottom of the pie plate, pressing it lightly and trimming off any excess. When the pie is filled, roll out the second crust in the same manner. When rolled out, spread the crust with little milk and additional Crisco, and sprinkle it with flour. Cut small vents as needed. Fold crust over and transfer to filled pie. Crimp with a fork the top and bottom crust edges together. Bake according to recipe below. Apple Pie *Shared from Old Farmer s Almanac Website* Pastry for a double crust 9 inch pie (See recipe above.) 6 cups Northern Spy sliced apples (Granny Smith, Pippin, Gravenstein make good substitutes. Keep in mind that cooking times for apples vary with their hardness.) 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Scant teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons butter, melted 3 tablespoons flour, plus extra to sprinkle crust 2 to 3 tablespoons Crisco, to brush top crust 2 to 3 tablespoons milk, to brush crust Fill to rounding with sliced apples. Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, vanilla and butter to apples; toss together lightly. Sprinkle flour over all. Cover with top crust. Spread Crisco, several tablespoons of milk, and a sprinkling of flour over top crust, and make vents. Bake in preheated 450 degrees F oven for 15 minutes. Lower heat to 350 degrees F and continue baking 30 more minutes. This pie serves 6 to 8. Country Apple Dumplings *Shared from allrecipes.com Website* 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored 1 1/2 cups white sugar (or Splenda) 2 (10 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 (12 ounce) can or bottle of Mountain Dew 1 cup butter 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. 2. Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Roll each apple wedge in a crescent roll dough starting at the smallest end. Pinch to seal and place in the baking dish. 3. Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apple dumplings. Pour Mountain Dew over the dumplings. 4. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.

Tommy replied, "My Daddy's a lawyer." "Honest?" asked Billy. "No, just the regular kind," replied Tommy. My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 165 in about 2 seconds. I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started... "Life Is Short. Live It To The Fullest.
