1 DBF Rules Rules Dwnlad DBF Rules Summary: The AIAA thrugh the Applied Aerdynamics, Aircraft Design, Design Engineering and Flight Test Technical Cmmittees and the AIAA Fundatin invites all university students t participate in the Textrn Aviatin/Raythen Missile Systems - Student Design, Build, Fly Cmpetitin. The cntest will prvide a realwrld aircraft design experience fr engineering students by giving them the pprtunity t validate their analytic studies. Student teams will design, fabricate, and demnstrate the flight capabilities f an unmanned, electric pwered, radi cntrlled aircraft that can best meet the specified missin prfile. The gal is a balanced design pssessing gd demnstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affrdable manufacturing requirements while prviding a high vehicle perfrmance. T encurage innvatin and maintain a fresh design challenge, the design requirements and perfrmance bjectives will be updated fr each new cntest year. The changes will prvide new design requirements and pprtunities, while allwing fr applicatin f technlgy develped by the teams frm prir years. Check the rules package carefully as items and appraches that were legal in past years may nt be legal fr this cntest year. Only the cntents f this year's Rules package alng with the current FAQ and Q&A dcuments hld bearing n the requirements and/r allwances fr the current cntest year. It is the respnsibility f the teams t knw and fllw all prvided rules, the FAQ, and all cntest day briefings. Cash prizes are $2500 fr 1st, $1500 fr 2nd and $1000 fr 3rd place. The winning team may be invited t present their design at an AIAA cnference. The team with the best Reprt Scre will receive a $100 prize frm the Design Engineering Technical Cmmittee. 3 General Infrmatin Dwnlad DBF Rules Team Requirements: All team members (except fr a nn-student pilt) must be full time students at an accredited University r Cllege and student members f the AIAA. At least 1/3 f the team members must cnsist f freshman, sphmres r junirs (belw senir year, fr nn-fur year prgrams). The pilt must be an AMA (Academy f Mdel Aernautics) member. Teams may use a nn-university member fr the pilt if desired. We will prvide qualified pilts at the cntest n an as-available basis t assist teams wh are unable t have their pilt attend. There is n set requirement fr the number f students that must attend the flyff. It is preferred, but nt required, fr the team advisr r respnsible faculty member t attend. Team members may be updated/changed at any time during the cntest but must always cmply with the 1/3 rule. Fllwing the initial team pstings at the cntest beginning we will make a One Time update t the team member lists psted n the website. We will ntify teams when the website update change infrmatin may be sent, nrmally in February. Teams wishing a team member list update at that time must submit an updated cpy f the cntest entry frm with all fields fully filled (but nly the team member infrmatin may be changed). Each educatinal institutin may submit ne (1) team entry. The team members may be changed during the cntest perid, s schls may use an internal selectin prcess t determine their final design and team members prir t the written reprt submissin and fly-ff. Fr schls with multiple campuses in different cities each campus will be cnsidered as a separate entity. Tw r mre schls may cmbine t submit a single entry. Schls which already have an entry may nt have additinal students frm their schl participate as members f a team frm a different (shadw) schl. There is n entry limit this year. Past Year Reprts: Winning team design reprts frm prir cntest years are psted n the cntest website as examples. Nte that the frmatting and cntent has evlved frm ne year t the next. Only the rules nted in Scring apply fr the current year. The tp scring reprt(s) frm this year s cntest will be placed n the cntest web site fr the next year s cmpetitin. Spnsrship: Teams may slicit and accept spnsrship in the frm f funds r materials and cmpnents frm cmmercial rganizatins. All design, analysis, and fabricatin f the cntest entry is the sle respnsibility f the student team members. Cmmunicatins:

4 The cntest administratin will maintain a website cntaining the latest infrmatin regarding the cntest schedules, rules, and participating teams. The cntest web site is Questins regarding the cntest, schedules, r rules interpretatin may be sent t the cntest administratr by at: directr@aiaadbf.rg Questins received prir t the fficial entry submissin date will nt be answered directly. Select questins may be answered in the FAQ prir t the entry submissin date. Official questins and answers received fllwing the entry submissin date will be psted n the website FAQ. The DBF Organizing Cmmittee will utilize Facebk as an additinal means f cmmunicating with the teams during the cntest weekend nly. This will NOT be a means f cmmunicating rules, FAQ's, prtests, etc, but nly used in case f emergencies, weather delays r cntest weekend schedule updates. Additinal infrmatin will be included in a cntest site/ schedule t be sent ut t the registered teams prir t the fly-ff. Flight Line and Order: A flight rder list will be generated and ed t the teams n the Wednesday prir t the fly-ff weekend. Teams will always rtate in this rder. The flight rder will be repeated cntinuusly. The flight rder list will carry ver frm Thursday t Friday, Friday t Saturday and Saturday t Sunday at whatever spt in the rtatin it leaves ff. Each team s psitin in the flight rder will be determined frm their written reprt scre, highest reprt scre ges first. Reprt scres will be available fllwing the pilt briefing at the start f the cntest (they will nt be included with the rtatin sequence ). There will be staging bx psitins near the flight line. If yu are nt ready t enter a staging bx when yur rtatin number cmes up, yu will miss (frfeit) yur pprtunity fr that rtatin. Nte: It is each team's respnsibility t mnitr the ntificatins frm the scring table in rder t respnd if ready. A cntest fficial will be available t help teams enter the staging bx. If yu chse t leave the staging bx fr any reasn, yu may nt attempt a flight until yur turn cmes up again in the rtatin rder. Flight Curse: The rientatin (directin) f the flight curse will be adjusted based n the prevailing winds as determined by the Flight Line Judge. The flight curse will be psitined t maintain the greatest pssible safety t persnnel and facilities. The nminal flight curse is shwn in the Figure belw.

5 Prtest Prcedure: Submitting a prtest is a serius matter and will be treated as such. Teams may submit a prtest t the Cntest Administratin at any time during the cmpetitin. Prtests may nt be submitted after the cnclusin f the cmpetitin. Prtests must be submitted in writing and signed by the team advisr, designees are nt allwed fr prtest submissins. If the team advisr is nt present, he may FAX r a signed prtest t the team fr them t present. Remtely submitted prtests must be n hard cpy (printed by the team) and have the advisrs signature. A phne number where the advisr may be cntacted must be prvided. Prtests may be psted fr review at the decisin f the administratin. Prtests and penalties (up t disqualificatin frm the cntest fr deliberate attempts t misinfrm fficials, vilate the cntest rules, r safety infractins) will be decided by the Cntest Administratin. Prtests submitted but nt upheld by the judges may be given a penalty f the lss f ne flight scre t the team submitting the prtest. The decisin f the Cntest Administratin is final.

6 Schedule Dwnlad DBF Rules Entries: The entry perid OPENS 15 Octber at 8AM (0800) US Eastern Time. N entries will be accepted befre that time. A cmpleted entry must be RECEIVED by 5 PM (1700) US Eastern Time n 31 Octber. Entries will be cllected thrugh the nline Submissin system. The DBF entry frm is different frm the nes used fr ther AIAA student cmpetitins. The DBF entry can be fund in Resurces. Be sure t include ALL infrmatin requested in the frm. We will use the first (valid) entry received s be sure all supplied infrmatin is crrect the first time. If AIAA membership has been applied fr, but a member number has nt been issued, use "pending" fr the member number in the entry frm. The data must then be updated and resubmitted. Team rsters may be resubmitted during the Prpsal and Design Reprt phases f the cmpetitin. Incmplete entry frms will nt be accepted. It is the team's respnsibility t make sure the cntact addresses they supply remain active during the entire perid frm entry t the clse f the cmpetitin as will be the primary means t prvide infrmatin and updates. D nt use an internal team crrespndence list server as yur pint f cntact address. Nte: The AIAA mail servers will nt send addresses. D NOT use a htmail address fr any f yur team cntacts r . Prpsal: Teams are required t submit the prpsal with the entry frm via the nline submissin system. Entry frms and prpsals are due by 5 pm (1700) US Eastern Time n 31 Octber. The prpsals will be scred as defined in the prpsal requirements sectin. The tp 100 prpsals plus ties will be invited t submit design reprts and ptentially becme eligible fr the fly-ff. Teams will be ntified n later than 17 Nvember if their prpsal has been accepted r nt. Prpsals submitted by will nt be accepted. Prpsals will be judged as received. N crrectins/additins/changes will be allwed by the rganizers s check yur reprts carefully befre submitting them. Once a Reprt is submitted, n changes are allwed. Submissin f Prpsals is electrnic nly (n hard cpy required). The details fr the electrnic frmat and submissin are at the end f the reprt sectin in this rules dcument. Design Reprt: Design Reprts will be submitted using the nline system.

7 The design reprt submissin perid OPENS 1 February at 8AM (0800) US Eastern Time. The design reprt must be submitted by 5 pm (1700) US Eastern Time n 22 February. The reprts will be scred as defined in the design reprt requirements sectin. Reprts submitted by will nt be accepted. Reprts will be judged as received. N crrectins/additins/changes will be allwed by the rganizers s check yur reprts carefully befre submitting them. Once a Reprt is submitted, n changes are allwed. Submissin f Reprts is electrnic nly (n hard cpy required). The details fr the electrnic frmat and submissin, including a requirement fr a separate 3-view, are at the end f the reprt sectin in this rules dcument. Cntest Fly-ff: The cntest fly-ff is scheduled fr April 2018 and is anticipated t run frm 12PM (1200) t 6PM (1800) n Thursday, 8AM (0800) t 6PM (1800) n Friday, 7AM (0700) t 6PM (1800) n Saturday and 7AM (0700) t 5PM (1700) n Sunday. Awards will be presented at 5:30PM (1730) n Sunday. All teams shuld plan their travel s that they may stay fr the awards presentatins n Sunday. A final cntest schedule will be ed t the teams prir t the cntest date. Tech inspectins will begin n Thursday and will cntinue as required n Friday, Saturday and Sunday. T help streamline the cntest flw and maximize pprtunities fr each team t get their flights in, the Tech inspectins will be cnducted in the same rder as the flight rtatin (which is based n reprt scres) s that the first teams inspected will be the first teams in the flight queue. Teams may use the sequence t help estimate when they need t arrive at the cntest site t make sure they d nt miss their slt in the first tech inspectin rtatin. PLEASE NOTE: All schedule deadlines are strictly enfrced All deadlines are based n when an entry r submissin is Received (Save and Finalize) by Cntest fficials via the nline submissin system. Late entries and prpsals will NOT be accepted. Late reprt submissins will be disqualified. There is n allwance fr cmputer, internet, r pwer utages by the submitter, r any ther type f errr beynd the cntrl f the DBF Organizing Cmmittee. Teams which d nt submit the required electrnic reprt and 3-view will NOT be allwed t fly. It is the team s respnsibility t assure that all deadlines are knwn, understd and met.

8 Missin and Vehicle Design Dwnlad DBF Rules Missin Task Matrix: Reginal and Business Aircraft The bjective fr this year is t design a dual purpse reginal and business aircraft. General Paylads Missin 1 n paylad Missin 2 Passengers carried in the passenger cmpartment; passengers must be carried internally Missin 3 Passengers in the passenger cmpartment and paylad blcks in the paylad bay(s); all passengers and paylad blcks must be carried internally All passengers and paylad blcks must be secured sufficiently t assure safe flight withut pssible variatin f aircraft CG utside f design limits during flight Passengers Super Balls (r buncy balls) as shwn in Figure 1 Passengers will be prvided in tech inspectin and n the flight line The nminal size and weight f the balls are prvided in Table I The passengers will be randmly selected frm a pl f passengers with a distributin as shwn in Figure 2 Figure 1. Passenger Cmpartment Each passenger must have its wn, individual seat with an individual restraint system that accmmdates all passenger sizes All seats must be n ne level and n a single, planer surface Lngitudinal spacing between the largest passenger size must be a minimum f 0.25 inches Side-t-side spacing must accmmdate the largest size passengers withut interference N mre than tw adjacent seats and n mre than fur seats in a single rw There must be a lngitudinal aisle with a minimum width and height f 2.00 inches running the length f the passenger cmpartment; if there are nly ne r tw adjacent seats per rw, the aisle may be n either side but must still meet the minimum size requirement Paylad blcks will be a rectangular cubid with L (in) + W (in) + H (in) greater than r equal t 9 inches Teams will prvide their wn paylad blcks N side may be less than 2 Paylad blcks may weigh n mre than 8 unces

10 Paylad Bay(s) All paylad blcks fr each team must be the same size (cannt vary by mre than ¼ inch per side) Paylad bay(s) must be a cmpletely separate cmpartment frm the passengers cmpartment Paylad bay(s) must be behind and/r belw the passenger cmpartment There is n limit n battery weight this year Aircraft must demnstrate serviceability by replacing Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) LRUs will be defined in the Grund Missin Sectin f these rules General: Missin Sequence: Aircraft must be designed t be capable f perfrming all required missins Aircraft must pass the wing tip lad test with the largest paylad lading intended t fly The maximum lad demnstrated will be recrded and cannt be altered after cmpleting tech inspectin The Flight Missins must be flwn in rder A new missin cannt be flwn until the team has btained a successful scre fr the preceding missin Flight Missin 1 and the Grund Missin can be cmpleted in either rder Flight Missin 2 cannt be attempted until Flight Missin 1 AND the Grund Missin are successfully cmpleted After successfully cmpleting all three flight missins, teams will be allwed ne additinal attempt fr bth Missin 2 and Missin 3 in rder t imprve their scre. A Missin 2 repeat must be attempted befre a Missin 3 repeat can be attempted. The Missin 2 passengers and Missin 3 passengers/paylad blcks cannt exceed the maximum apprved during tech inspectin The aircraft will be brught t the staging bx ready t lad passengers with the paylad blcks already installed (Missin 3) The assembly crew member must lad the passengers and prepare the aircraft fr flight within the 5 minute windw If yu frget smething yu must leave the staging bx and frfeit the flight attempt Only the assembly crew member, pilt and bserver may g t and enter the staging bx r Grund Missin area The assembly crew member is the nly persn wh can tuch the airplane while inside the staging bx while preparing the aircraft fr flight The passenger lading and aircraft checkut must be cmpleted in less than 5 minutes

11 There is n wrk allwed n the aircraft after the 5 minute lading and checkut time including cnnectin f batteries, receivers, etc. The aircraft must be ready t fly prir t being called t the flight line less the installatin f the arming plug After passenger lading and checkut is cmplete, the assembly crew member may be swapped fr a different flight line crew member, if desired Aircraft will use grund rlling takeff and landing Takeff field length will be limited t 150 ft The initial upwind turn n the first lap f each missin will ccur after passing the turn judge (signaled by raising a flag). The aircraft must remain in unaided visual cntrl distance f the pilt at all times. The Flight Line Judge may require turns t be made t remain in a safe visual cntrl range at his discretin Aircraft must cmplete a successful landing at the end f each missin fr the missin t receive a scre A successful landing is utlined in the general missin specificatin sectin belw The aircraft empty weight will be recrded after each successful flight missin Tech Inspectin The Aircraft will enter Tech Inspectin fully assembled and flight ready The Aircraft will underg the wing tip lift test with the maximum flight paylad installed (maximum weight cmbinatin f passengers and carg) Flight Missins: Missin 1: Aircraft Missin Staging There is n paylad fr the demnstratin flight Takeff within the prescribed field length Teams must cmplete 3 laps within the flight windw There will be a 5 minute flight windw fr this missin Time starts when the aircraft thrttle is advanced fr the (first) take-ff (r attempt) A lap is cmplete when the aircraft passes ver the start/finish line in the air (the landing is nt part f the 5 minute time windw) Time stps when the aircraft passes ver the start/finish line in the air at the end f the third lap Must cmplete a successful landing t get a scre Scring: M1 = 1.0 fr successful missin Missin 2: Shrt Haul f Max passengers The paylad fr the Shrt Haul is passengers Teams may select the number f passengers flwn but it cannt exceed the maximum number f passengers declared at Tech Inspectin

14 N frm f externally assisted take-ff is allwed. All energy fr take-ff must cme frm the nbard prpulsin battery pack(s) Must be prpeller driven and electric pwered with an unmdified ver-the-cunter mdel electric mtr. May use multiple mtrs and/r prpellers. May be direct drive r with gear r belt reductin Mtrs may be any cmmercial brush r brushless electric mtr Fr safety, each aircraft will use a cmmercially prduced prpeller/blades. Must use a cmmercially available prpeller hub/pitch mechanism. Teams may mdify the prpeller diameter by clipping the tip and may paint the blades t balance the prpeller. N ther mdificatins t the prpeller are allwed. Cmmercial ducted fan units are allwed Yu can change the prpeller diameter/pitch fr each flight attempt Mtrs and batteries may be limited in current draw by means f a fuse in the line frm the psitive battery terminal t the mtr cntrller. There is n set limit n the fuse rating. If used, it is the respnsibility f each team t prperly size the fuse t prtect the battery, mtr, and cntrller against vercurrents frm any surce. Fuse(s) must be lcated such that n prpulsin system cmpnent: mtr; mtr cntrller; r battery may see mre current than the stated limit (fuse value) Fuse must be placed in the psitive (+) lead frm the battery, and shuld be as clse t the battery(s) as feasible Must use ver the cunter NiCad r NiMH batteries. LiP batteries are nt allwed. Fr safety, battery packs must have shrink-wrap r ther prtectin ver all electrical cntact pints. The individual cells must be cmmercially available and the manufacturers label must be readable/dcumented (i.e. clear shrink wrap preferred). All battery discnnects must be "fully insulated" style cnnectrs There is n limit t battery pack weight this year. The prpulsin battery pack must pwer prpulsin systems nly. Radi Rx and servs MUST be n a separate battery pack. Batteries may nt be changed r charged during a flight missin attempt. Aircraft and pilt must be AMA legal. This means that the aircraft TOGW (take-ff grss weight with paylad) must be less than 55-lb, and the pilt must be a member f the AMA Since this is an AMA sanctined event, the team must submit prf that the aircraft has been flwn prir t the cntest date (in flight pht) t the technical inspectin team. We will prvide qualified pilts at the cntest n an as-available basis t assist teams wh are unable t have their pilt attend The aircraft must remain substantially the same as dcumented in the reprt (fr example yu cannt change a flying wing design t a cnventinal tail design). Yu may make small mdificatins t the design t imprve flight perfrmance after the reprt submissin (ne example wuld be changing a cntrl surface size). The three-view drawing supplied in pdf frm as described belw in the electrnic reprt sectin will be used t verify the flight article during tech inspectin The aircraft must have an externally accessible switch t turn n the radi cntrl system. It cannt be internal r under a panel r hatch.

15 Safety: All vehicles will underg a safety inspectin by a designated cntest safety inspectr prir t being allwed t make any cmpetitin flight. All decisins f the safety inspectr are final. T speed the tech inspectin prcess each team must present a signed Pre-Tech and First-Flight Certificatin when called t begin their n-site tech inspectin. Teams may nt begin the n-site tech inspectin withut a cmpleted certificatin. The Pre-Tech and First-Flight Certificatin sheet is available n the cntest website. The Pre-Tech must be cnducted by, and signed ff by, a nn team member RC pilt r the team faculty advisr. The Pre-Tech will cver the same safety f flight requirements as the n-site tech inspectin and will assist teams in making sure they are ready and able t pass the n-site tech inspectin the first time. An expanded First-Flight requirement, which als must be signed ff by a nn team member RC pilt r the team faculty advisr, requires demnstratin f a cmplete flight including take-ff, flying a minimum flight pattern, and landing in a pre-designated lcatin withut damage t the aircraft. The nn team member RC pilt wh signs the inspectin and flight certificatins may be the same as a team's nn-student cntest pilt. Safety inspectins will include the fllwing as a minimum: Physical inspectin f vehicle t insure structural integrity: 1. Verify all cmpnents adequately secured t vehicle. Verify all fasteners tight and have either safety wire, lcktite (fluid) r nylck nuts. Clevises n flight cntrls must have an apprpriate safety device t prevent their disengaging in flight 2. Verify prpeller structural and attachment integrity 3. Visual inspectin f all electrnic wiring t assure adequate wire gauges and cnnectrs in use 4. Radi range check, mtr ff and mtr n 5. Check general integrity f the paylad system Structural verificatin: All aircraft will be lifted with ne lift pint at each wing tip t verify adequate wing strength (this is "rughly" equivalent t a 2.5g lad case) and t check fr vehicle cg lcatin. Teams must mark the expected empty and laded cg lcatins n the exterir f the aircraft. Special prvisins will be made at the time f the cntest fr aircraft whse cg des nt fall within the wing tip chrd. This test will be made with the aircraft filled t its maximum paylad capacity Radi fail-safe check. All aircraft radis must have a fail-safe mde that is autmatically selected during lss f transmit signal. The failsafe will be demnstrated n the grund by switching ff the transmit radi. The radi Fail Safe prvisins will be strictly enfrced: All aircraft must have a mechanical mtr arming system separate frm the nbard radi Rx switch. This may be the cntest specified "blade" style fuse. Or, an arming plug such as may be used. This device must be lcated s it is accessible by a crewmember standing ahead f the prpeller(s) fr pusher aircraft, and standing behind the prpeller(s) fr tractr aircraft (i.e. the crew member must nt reach acrss the prpeller plane t access the arming system). The "Safety Arming Device" will be in "Safe" mde fr all paylad changes. The aircraft Rx shuld always be pwered n and the thrttle verified t be "clsed" befre activating the mtr arming switch. The arming system MUST be munted n the utside the aircraft (they cannt be behind an access panel r dr) and MUST act as the "safeing" device. 23 Scring Dwnlad DBF Rules In the event that, due t time r facility limitatins, it is nt pssible t allw all teams t have the maximum number f flight attempts, the cntest cmmittee reserves the right t ratin and/r schedule flights. The exact determinatin f hw t ratin flights will be made n the cntest day based n the number f entries, weather, and field cnditins. In the event f a tie, Reprt Scre will take precedence ver Flight Scre as a tiebreaker. Judging Students must design, dcument, fabricate, and demnstrate the aircraft they determine t be capable f achieving the highest scre n the specified missin prfile(s). Missin scres will be based n the demnstrated missin perfrmance btained during the cntest. Each team must als submit a written Design Reprt. Questin: If the airplane is damaged n a flight can we use anther cpy f the aircraft which has the same design? Answer: N, yu must repair the riginal aircraft. Wind speed is nt the nly factr the that may be cnsidered. Aircraft Cnfiguratin Questins: Questins: Can there be thrust vectring via rtating the engine, nzzles, blwn surfaces etc.? Answer: Yes. Any f the abve ptins is allwed, and may be varied during flight. Hwever, "rtary wing" vehicles are nt allwed, s yu may need t cnsult the judges with yur specific design desn't crss ver the line int vertical flight capability. Questin: Can we change the aircraft gemetry, such as wing sweep r span, fr different missins? Answer: Variable gemetry is allwed prvided it is cntrlled remtely thrugh the RC cntrl system. Yu may nt "swap ut" parts fr different missins. Questin: D the external fuse accessibility requirements (frm behind if tractr, frm the frnt if pusher) exclude the use f a pusher-puller type multi-engine cnfiguratin?
