3 B R U C E T R A I L C L U B A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I sincerely hope that 2018 is off to a great start for you and your loved ones. At the board level, we are all working hard to make this a great year for our club. As of our January board meeting I have assumed the role of club President. We needed to make some changes when our Club Treasurer resigned to tend to his young family and hectic travel schedule. I want to take this opportunity to thank Justin Park for his many contributions to our board. The treasurer role is a heavy portfolio and this change left a sizeable hole in our board. Thankfully, Doug Stansbury volunteered. Doug is a talented and capable financial manager in his own private company. Doug holds a Diploma in Public Accountancy and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting & Finance from McGill University. We are in very good hands in regards to the club s financial operations. I want to sincerely thank Doug for his leadership and many contributions to our club. Doug has been an excellent President, and we are very lucky that he remains on our board. I know I will be relying on his expertise as I learn my new role. Thank you to the Nominations Committee for all of their work in facilitating the new roles. We also ratified a new board member at our January meeting. I would like to welcome Cecelia Keller to the board. Cecilia has assumed a Director-at-Large position. It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I take on the role of club President. For me the Bruce Trail is a treasure in the truest sense of the word. Its very existence has provided me with every kind of wonder, joy and happiness imaginable. I constantly share my love for the trail with family, friends, co-workers and on social media. It is because the Bruce Trail has provided me with so many gifts that I feel I need to give back. I have been a trail monitor, a trail captain, a hike leader and board member. I feel very lucky to work with like-minded passionate and dedicated volunteers. I want to publicly thank our board for their support and tireless efforts. I promise, I will work hard with our talented board to preserve and secure the trail for future generations. I am looking forward to an amazing year. I hope to meet you on the trail! Cheers, Michael McDonald Board Nominations Committee - submitted by Gloria Pennycook The Iroquoia Board initiated a Nominations Committee about one year ago. The purpose of the Committee is to develop a slate of candidates for the Board to be approved by the membership at the AGM in May. In this process, we hope to identify potential candidates through posting the open positions on our website, as well as the BTC website. In addition, the ongoing applications of volunteers who express interest in leadership are also considered. Potential candidates for open positions are asked to send a short resume and they will also be interviewed by 2 members of the Nominations Committee (NC). The NC will then select the best candidate. The Board may approve new members in between AGMs. The NC will keep an ongoing list of potential candidates even if all positions are filled. A nominations slate will be presented to the Membership 2 weeks prior to the AGM via the website. The final vote will be held at the AGM. If you are interested in a Board position, please complete the Volunteer application on the BTC web site or send me an directly with your background and interests. "3

5 News from the Crews B R U C E T R A I L C L U B To cut or not to cut? that is the question! - submitted by Lyne Desforges We always appreciate when hikers let us know of any hazards they may encounter along the trail and we do our best to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Some of you may wonder why, in certain cases, we do not remove or cut down certain trees. Tree removal has specidic guidelines as well as risks, which we must assess. Consider these two cases: Case #1: Tree fallen over the trail. According to our guidelines, if the top of fallen trunk is less than 12 inches from the ground, it is not necessary to remove it because hikers can easily to pass over it. It may be removed at a later date if deemed necessary. Case #2: Tree leaning over the trail As trees fall, they sometimes end up wedged in the branches of upright trees. They are stuck in position and pose no immediate threat. Removing them is very difdicult and dangerous. Therefore, these trees are monitored regularly. If our crews suspect that a tree will soon fall down, then we would hire a professional arborist to take care of it. "5

9 The Happy Trail Worker B R U C E T R A I L C L U B By Lyne Desforges Registered Holistic Nutritionist Instead of a Happy Hiker article on Health and Wellness, I thought you would enjoy an article by Don Cangiano, one of our dedicated trail captain. Don was editor of the Bruce Trail Treadway, a publication for Trail Workers. This is a reprint from the February 2012 edition. Hopefully this will make you chuckle, and everyone knows that laughter is very good for your health and wellness! Why Do 20 Volunteers Show up at a Work Party to Take Down ONE Dead Tree? The of'icial answer: As a volunteer, you are concerned for the safety of hikers and react promptly to the removal of any obstruction on the trail that could cause injury to a hiker or the surrounding environment. The real reasons: It is a beautiful day. Why waste it doing frivolous tasks around the house that could just as easily be done some other time. You ve been cooped up in the house since December and the only person that you ve spoken to, other than your spouse, is your pet. It s seniors day at Shoppers Drug Mart and your spouse would like you to accompany them to the store to get in on some bargains. You d rather eat your lunch on a log than at your kitchen table. After the work party, you know the crew is heading out to Tim Hortons for coffee and cookies. Your Christmas lights are still up and your spouse has been embarrassed long enough they must come down today! Your car is badly in need of a wash and the carwash is on the way to the job site. The work party is really a hike. Some of your friends are trail workers, and in some cases, your only friends. You received a new Thermos for Christmas and you haven t used it yet. It snowed the night before and if you re out long enough it just might melt away before you get home. You re training for a long hike later this year and you want to get in shape a work party is cheaper than a gym membership. You ve lost 15 pounds since Christmas and you want to tell someone who just might care. You re on some new medication and you want to see if anyone else is taking the same stuff. You have a new lime-green jacket that glows in the dark and the only place that you can really wear it is in the bush. You can pretty well say anything you want when you re out on the trail, nobody listens anyway. Nobody in the group is texting or even knows what that is. You re sick and tired of being politically correct and you want to tell someone how it really is. "9
