1 The Newsletter of the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club The Iroquoian Vol. 46 No. 4 Winter 2011/2012 Eldon Spurrell, a memorial Eldon also volunteered with the Pathfinders, a seniors hiking group based at the Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre in Oakville, where he was president of the group for many years. With the Pathfinders, he completed six Bruce Trail end-to-ends and was working on his seventh. I m sure all who knew him would agree that Eldon was a character, but he was also a man of character; a man who could be depended on to fulfill any commitment he made. He had a larger than life personality, best characterized as kindly curmudgeon. He loved life, and could always be counted on to add zest to any gathering. At the many BTC annual meetings attended by myself, Eldon and his wife Elma, he participated enthusiastically in the silent auction. He also loved to dance, and made sure any lady attending a party on her own had a spin on the dance floor. Eldon s outgoing personality, honesty and friendship will be truly missed by all who knew him. By Heather Latto, Iroquoia member Last May 27, Eldon Spurrell, former treasurer and newly-elected president of the Iroquoia Bruce Club passed away. His passing was unexpected, and a great shock to all who knew him. A personal friend for nearly 30 years, Eldon was also a good friend to the Bruce Trail Conservancy, giving generously of his time, energy and money to support the Dream. He served as treasurer of the Iroquoia Club for several years, where he was affectionately known as Dr. No. At the club annual meeting in April, he was elected president, a role he would have filled admirably. Eldon and Elma lived in Oakville, where they raised sons Rod and Colin and daughter Nancy. They also had six grandchildren. Besides the two groups mentioned above, Eldon had been involved with the Boy Scouts, the Hopedale Presbyterian Church, and had served as president of the Oakville Minor Soccer Association. Elma has asked us to convey the following message: On behalf of the Spurrell family, I wish to extend my appreciation to Eldon s Bruce Trail friends and fellow hikers for their compassion, kind thoughts, and expressions of sympathy to us in those trying days after his sudden death. Your generous gifts to the Conservancy in Eldon s memory were greatly appreciated. Continued on page 3

Eldon never stopped working towards that dream and was so proud to be part of the effort to realize it. Our thanks to all of you for being such a big part of his life in those happy retirement years. The Oakville Pathfinders Club has published a pictorial book about Eldon s involvement with the Club. Look in the next edition of the Iroquoian (spring 2012) for more information. Royal Botanical Gardens Arboretum Nature For the first time ever, the Iroquoia club held a family hike as part of Bruce Trail Day. This hike took place at Kerncliff Park in Burlington. The next time you take a hike along the Iroquoia section of the trail, take a second look at the sparkling new blazes along the way. This herculean effort was taken on by 20 volunteers this past summer. In spite of hot and humid weather, our blaze team managed to cover 120 kilometres of main trail, paint approximately 4500 blazes and dedicate close to 900 volunteer hours to the task. But it was worth it say our volunteers and many hikers who have already expressed their appreciation. Centre, 16 Old Guelph Road, Dundas. 5 Iroquoia bruce trail club page 5 So far, so good Clothing for winter hikes Don t let the cold stop you By Bob Humphries Here I sit at the end of what has been another long summer of hot weather for hiking. The winter edition of your Bruce trail club quarterly newsletter is in your hands, and I have just finished entering into the system the hikes I have planned to lead this winter, for publication. To many of you, the prospect of winter hiking is something that you might consider with a mixture of fear and trepidation. Hey, it s cold out there. You ve gotta be nuts! is a response I can hear now, from scores of comfortable armchairs and sofas, in nice warm basements. Yes, it can be cold out there, and if you go out in bad weather, or dressed inappropriately for the conditions, then yes, it can be decidedly dangerous. To the first of these you just apply common sense, and so if a blizzard is in the forecast, you don t go, but stay home, it s as simple as that. For appropriate clothing though, if winter hiking is something you have not tried before, then I suspect that if you look in your closet, you will find that you already have most of what you need right there already. Starting at the extremities, and first of all with the feet, your regular hiking boots will do just fine. The same goes for your socks, whether you wear the traditional double-sock combination (like myself), of merino wool over a polypropylene liner sock, or modern acrylic heavy duty socks with in built wicking capability. At the other end of your body comes your head, which is definitely important to keep warm in winter, and the answer to that is a good old Canadian woolen toque, of a generous size that you can pull down over your ears. (if it comes expressing some past or current allegiance to the leafs, then fear not, you will have something to discuss with your fellow hikers, especially those of us who are re-vitalized Winnipeg Jets fans!) On your hands you will require some form of warm, insulated gloves or preferably mitts. Ideally these should be moisture resistant, such as with a Gore-Tex outer shell, but if conditions are dry, you can always start off by using those bright red mitts you bought from The Bay for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Now we come to the main part of your body, where the key word is layering. Basically, there are three layers to consider, base, mid, and outer. These layers are relatively thin, and should be easily adjustable (with zips) or removable for temperature management. The key to winter hiking is temperature management, for you are exercising, and thus converting energy into heat. You don t want to get too hot and sweat profusely, nor be too cold, so you will need to regulate your temperature by removing, adjusting, or adding these layers. It is not unknown to start a winter hike with three layers, and over the course of a hike come down to one, remembering of course to add them again when stopped for lunch. Your hike leader should be competent enough to stop every couple of kilometres to allow the opportunity for hikers to make these adjustments. Avoid nice puffy, polyester winter wear, or down-filled parkas, as these offer too much insulation for finetuning your temperature control. Remember, you are hiking on the Bruce Trail in southern Ontario, not in Winnipeg or Yellowknife. So, to the layers The most common and available base layer is thermal underwear, top and bottom, which must be made of a synthetic wicking fiber to keep you dry. On no account do you wear cotton. Avoid it like the plague! The big problem is that cotton retains moisture from perspiration, which will soon make you uncomfortable. Sure there is thermal underwear out there, sold in the big-box stores at the mall, made of cotton, but it s for standing around waiting at transit bus stops, not getting exercise by hiking. Take yourself to your outdoor equipment store, and start reading labels carefully. Continued on page 6

6 page 6 iroquoia bruce trail club Continued from page 5 An alternative to a synthetic wicking fiber is merino wool, but is less readily available, and should obviously be avoided if you are allergic to wool against your skin. For a mid, insulating layer, an acrylic fleece is the first choice, with an old woolen (not cotton) sweater as an alternate. Whether zipped at the front or pullover is a matter of personal choice, although a zipped front does allow better temperature regulation. Meanwhile on your legs, a pair of pants made from a synthetic fabric such as woven nylon will do just nicely. Finally, your outer layer should be a waterproof breathable jacket, something you most likely have for those summer hikes when it rains. For the lower half, either gaiters, or waterproof breathable pants make a fine outer layer to keep your legs warm and dry. Looking back over all that I suspect, with the possible exception of the thermal underwear, you already have clothing suitable to get started in winter hiking. So what s stopping you? Come on out and keep in contact with all your fellow hikers, you walked with the rest of the year!

Five members came out to do their part in making the Niagara Escarpment a cleaner place.
