4 page 4 The online Iroquoian By Gary Wrathall The summer, 2012 Iroquoian is the fourth edition delivered in part via the Internet. And it s saving the Iroquoia Club lots of money!! With almost 2,200 members, we now have 1,300 members or 59 % -- taking the newsletter via the Internet. The result is a significant savings in the money spent by the Club on printing and mailing newsletter copies. The process for receiving the newsletter via the Internet is relatively simple. First of all, you need to have an account on the website of the Bruce Trail Conservancy ( org.) If you iroquoia bruce trail club don t currently have an account, you can easily create one by using the Haven t logged in as a Member before? link on the website. Once you ve created your account, you will automatically receive a brief message four times a year from brucetrail-news@brucetrail.org telling you that the latest Iroquoian is available from the Conservancy website. A copy of the newsletter in PDF ( portable document format ) is posted on the website, and the message provides an instant link to this document. You don t have to follow the usual log-in procedure. Simply click on the link to see the newsletter. You can read it on screen, or print it on your computer, or save it to your computer for viewing and/or printing at another time. This online edition is more interesting and colourful than the traditional black & white, mailed edition. Most pictures used in the Iroquoian are in full colour, digital format, and are re-produced this way in the online edition. Many advertisements are also in full colour. The Club recognized that some members don t have a computer, or don t want to receive their newsletter via the Internet. Accordingly, we still offer printed, mailed copies to members. If your address was on file with the Bruce Trail Conservancy head office, you may have received the message described above containing the link to the online edition. If you don t want to receive these notices, and want the mailed copy instead, simply do this: Call the BTC membership coordinator, Laura Tuohy, at , ext. 29, and ask to remain on the mailing list, or her with the same request at ltuohy@ brucetrail.org. If you ve never had an address on file with the Conservancy, then everything remains the same. You are mailed a printed copy. Going the online, digital route is more convenient, if you have computer access. In addition to the Iroquoian newsletter, you can also choose to receive any of the following: A brief monthly, electronic newsletter from the BTC called BTC enews, Trail Change Notices as soon as they are posted to the BTC website a good thing if you re are an active hiker or hike leader because they are available between editions of the Bruce Trail magazine, updates from the Iroquoia Club, offering important information on club events, changes and other things between the quarterly editions of the newsletter.

5 Iroquoia bruce trail club page 5 Official Iroquoia Club End to End October 20, 21, 27, 28 The annual Iroquoia Club End to End is held in four hikes over two weekends, and will take place on October 20, 21, 27, 28. 6 page 6 iroquoia bruce trail club A 50 kilometre trail challenge Imagine this 50 hikers -- following the blazes of the Bruce Trail for 50 kilometres in the same day! What is it? It s the 50 KM Trailblazers Challenge a fundraising event of the Bruce Trail Conservancy to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Bruce Trail hike. It takes place in the Caledon Hills and Dufferin Highlands sections of the Bruce Trail on Saturday, June 24th. It won t be easy! Hikers will meet in the Mono Cliffs Provincial Park in the Dufferin section of the Trail for a pre-hike rally, then take a bus south to a spot in the Caledon section to start the hike. Along the northward hike they can take advantage of refreshment stations, and if they reach the end, a post-hike feast & celebration. Because it s a fundraiser, all hike participants are required to pre-register, and have a minimum of $ 500 in pledges to support them. The funds raised will go to the BTC goal to secure, steward and make available to the public an additional 5,000 acres of Niagara Escarpment landscape. Here s how you can help Two members of the Iroquoia Club veteran end-to-enders Fiona Nisbett and Dan Welch are the official club participants in the 50 km challenge. Anyone who knows them will know they can hike the entire distance. You can make or pledge donation to either Fiona or Dan in one of two ways: Dan Welsh s fundraising page: Fiona Nisbets s fundraising page: Call our Club s vice-president Gary Wrathall at (Burlington) or him at gary.wrathall@ sympatico.ca to make a donation. Those making an eligible pledge donation will be issued a tax receipt.

7 Iroquoia bruce trail club page 7 Grindstone Creek One of the most pleasant walks of the Iroquoia section is crossing the Grindstone Valley, from Snake Road to Smokey Hollow, south of Waterdown. The 3.4 km trail is considered to be 87% secured, as the properties being crossed are subject to an easement or owned by the BTC or Conservation Halton. This significant achievement is thanks to the efforts of volunteers such as Eric Best and Paul Toffoletti, and staff members Antoin Diamond and Scott Langley, among others. We continue to be in touch with the remaining landowners, and look forward to the day when the entire valley is secured. 8 page 8 A notice to all hikers. Following a few simple guidelines will help make your hiking more pleasurable. Be honest with yourself when judging the length, speed and difficulty of the hike you wish to attend If in doubt, call the leader. Always carry I.D. and your Health Card. Dress in layers suitable for the weather. Hiking boots and raingear are essential. Stay with the group when hiking. Don t go ahead or fall behind. Please follow any instructions given by the leader. Bring food and water. Stay around for a few minutes at the end of the hike to see if you are needed to drive other hikers back to their cars. If bad weather is forecast, call the leader. Remember, all of our leaders are unpaid volunteers. You are invited to attend, but do so at your own risk. Thoughts from Hike Management Director Anne Armstrong I have just completed my first year as your Hike Management Director. It has been an exciting year of learning experiences, with many successes and some challenges. I have had the support and encouragement of the other members of the Iroquoia Board and friends and, most importantly, the support and cooperation of all of our volunteer hike leaders who spend hours planning and leading all the hikes which you see in our magazine. Without them there would be no hiking program. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of them. I look forward to another year of managing our hiking program and providing support to our leaders in conjunction with our Board of Directors. I would like to draw your attention to some important points. As you know our Slowpokes group has disbanded due to lack of interest. While it is sad it is also a sign of a club going through transition. Many of our members will have fond memories of their times with this group. The strength of our club lies in having a strong hiking program and to do that we are always in need of new leaders. If you have ever thought of being a hike leader, don t hesitate to come forward. We will be happy to iroquoia bruce trail club All map and kilometer notations are from the 26th Edition of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide, unless otherwise stated. Please judge your abilities appropriately according to the hike ratings: Pace speed of hike Slow km/hr Moderate km/hr Medium km/hr Fast km/hr Very fast km/hr + Difficulty of terrain: Mostly flat and easy, good footing Normal, some hills and poor footing Strenuous, hilly and poor footing Difficult, very hilly, rocky, poor footing Most rugged, very hilly, very rocky, Bad footing help you in any way we can by providing hike leader training and mentoring you on your first hikes. Please think about offering your services and if interested, let me know. We have had a number of new leaders come into the hike program and would love to have more. One of our challenges is to reach newer, younger hikers and to that end, one of our leaders, Valerie Dobson, has been and continues to lead family walks directed at families with young children. She is hoping to attract families out to her hikes. Some of us have grandchildren who come out with us, but we can always invite others we know who have potential younger hikers. Valerie s hikes are listed in our current hike schedule. At times you may have some concerns about a hikes in which you have participated. If at any time you have a concern with what has taken place on a hike, please talk to the hike leader about it. He or she will not know of your dissatisfaction or concerns unless you talk to him or her about it. If you don t feel comfortable in talking to the hike leader, please call me or me. My contact information is in the Iroquoian magazine. Please do not call BTC at Rasberry House. They have nothing to do with our hikes and will not be able to address your concerns. Thank you for coming out to our hikes. I hope you enjoy them and find a warm and friendly welcome when you come. Happy hiking.
