A Message From The President We are currently in the middle of winter, but spring will be here before we know it. Unlike many of the mammals and amphibians that are in hibernation along our trail, our board and our membership have been very active. Everyone that was lucky enough to attend our special event, Village Green A Kinks Tribute for the Bruce Trail, had a spectacular time. Most importantly we were able to raise funds for the Fisher s Pond property which the BTC successfully purchased this past December. This land is a real treasure, and I hope you find time to hike along the trail on this property sometime soon. Our members had a wonderful time at our club s annual New Year s Day hike. The weather was fantastic for hiking, and we had many long-time members, and some potential new members join us for some wonderful outdoor adventures. Over 160 people came out to start off 2019 in this beautiful and meaningful way. Thank you to the volunteers and hike leaders who made this such a great event. A sincere thank you to outgoing board member Meredith Baker. Meredith made significant contributions to many events our board held and she will be missed. I am pleased Meredith and her partner Stu will be volunteering as trail monitors for our club. For those of you interested, there are many ways to become active in our club. Our board is currently planning our club s upcoming Annual General Meeting in May. I would encourage you to attend. We have a wonderful guest speaker in place, and we also use the opportunity to hand out some awards. Our board is also at work planning for a spectacular Bruce Trail Conservancy AGM in September of Our club is hosting this year and we are planning to make this an AGM to remember. Spring brings with it a sense of excitement and renewal. I urge each of our members to make a resolution to get outside and explore a section of the trail that you don t visit frequently. Fall in love with a new section of the trail. I know a world of natural wonder awaits each of you. I hope that 2019 brings each of you lots of joy, adventure and happy hiking. Let s all continue to work together in Preserving a ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever. Cheers, Michael McDonald President, Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club 3

News from the Crews Winter Inspection Walks! By Lyne Desforges Trail Maintenance Director, Iroquoia Club During winter, regular work parties are replaced with regular inspection walks. Trail maintenance volunteers will hike various sections of trails looking for any possible tree hazards or other general trail maintenance issues. The absence of foliage permits a clearer view of the surroundings and enables volunteers to identify areas that may need work parties in the spring. Winter is also a good time to remove certain hazard trees without the added weight of foliage. Trail captains and trail monitors continue to walk their sections, even during the winter, to ensure all is well. SHARING THE TRAIL Are you a natural leader? An adventurer? An experienced navigator? Do you use the Bruce Trail often? Do you love the trail? Would you like to share your love of the trail? What better way to share the trail than to become a Hike Ontario certified hike leader. The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club is always looking for and inviting new members to join our roster of hike leaders in order to provide a complete and balanced schedule of guided hikes in our section throughout the year. Please consider becoming a leader. We are providing training through Hike Ontario in Burlington on June 8th, If interested, please check out the Hike Ontario website for more details and to register for the course. There are limited spaces. For additional questions, you can contact the instructor, Anne Armstrong, at hikingrandma@gmail.com BTC members should contact Anne for a security code prior to registering. Trail maintenance volunteers may also hike in other jurisdictions such as the Pipeline Trail, Waterfront Trail, Red Hill Valley trails, and Sixteen Mile Creek trails. We may also walk the Bruce Trail in other clubs (Niagara or Toronto). This allows us to socialize, to chat about what we do and to discuss plans for future maintenance activities and programs. The wintertime is an excellent time to get a clear view of the rock formations and geology of the Niagara Escarpment. So get out your hiking shoes, your crampons or snowshoes, hit the trails and enjoy the scenery. And if you see any hazards along the way, contact us so we can deal with it as promptly as possible. YOGATHON IN SUPPORT OF THE BTC The fabulous people at Yogashala are hosting the 3rd annual Yogathon in support of the Bruce Trail Conservancy on March 2, There will be a full day of yoga workshops. Come and join the fun! Registration through Yogashala, 312 Dundas St E, Waterdown, ON and yogabums@live.com Check our website for more details to come. $5 a class or $35 for the day. 5

The Happy Hiker Keeping Warm with Thermogenic Foods By Lyne Desforges & Helen Kwon Registered Holistic Nutritionists It s that time of year when we put on the extra layer of thermals to keep us warm on the trails. But did you know that there is another way to keep our body warm and comfortable during our hike? Thanks to the power of thermogenic foods, we can keep warm from the inside out. What are thermogenic foods? All the foods we consume produce energy and give off heat, courtesy of our digestive and metabolic systems, but there are certain foods that increase your body temperature much better than others. Foods with higher amounts of protein, good fats and fibre take longer to digest and this produces more energy and heat. These are known as thermogenic foods and because of their ability to rev up our metabolism this can also support healthy weight loss. Before you head out to the trails on a cold winter s day, consider consuming some thermogenic foods to keep you warm and toasty, from the inside out. Our Favourite Thermogenic Foods: Black Pepper, Ceylon Cinnamon, Cruciferous Vegetables, Fatty Fish, Ginger, Green Tea, Hot Peppers, Nuts and Turmeric. For more information on each of these thermogenic foods, consult our latest blog post at Want more thermogenic foods in your diet? Try out our Curry Chickpea Stew at cestlaviewellness.ca/recipes/curry-chickpeastew/. It is full of thermogenic foods to warm you inside and out. Bon appétit! 6

Skyline Hikers: Camp for Adults in the Rockies By Kelly Watt, writer, traveller and walker Kelly is the author of Camino Meditations and walked the Camino de Santiago in 2008 If you re hankering after that great Canadian wilderness experience, but don t like going solo, you have to try hiking with Skyline Hikers in the Rockies. It s like summer camp for adults. As members of the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club, my husband Allan and I are often on the lookout for fresh ambulatory adventures. This past July, Allan talked me into walking 17 kilometres into Bryant Creek in Banff National Park to camp for a week in a tent. I confess I m a reluctant camper at the best of times I ll take hotels over outhouses any day so I wasn t sure why I let him talk me into it. But once there, I loved it. Skyline Hikers offers what they call backpacking without the backpack. A non-profit adventure hiking outfit in the Canadian Rockies, Skyline was originally started by CP Railways in the 1930s and has managed to maintain some of its old-timey charm. Hikers walk into base camp, staying for a week in white canvas prospectors tents yes, the real deal complete with cots and wood stoves for chilly nights. All meals, day hikes and evening entertainment are provided. To prepare we were told to pack our gear in duffel bags, no more than 42 lbs., with such Cadillac camping incidentals as: flashlight, mug, fold-up chair (no metal), biodegradable soap, quick drying towel, comfy shoes and hiking clothes for cold weather and warm. But, get this, besides a day pack, we didn t have to carry most of it, because all our gear was packed in on horseback. Monday morning, we took a bus to the trail head and walked in, unencumbered. Once we arrived at camp, we were greeted by volunteers who cheered and carried our bags to our tents. Skyline s base camp turned out to be a rugged paradise. Picture this: a mythic valley ringed by mountains and evergreens, cerulean sky above and clouds that would make Joni Mitchell proud. The stillness was transformative. Don t get me wrong, we were still roughing it. We slept in sleeping bags, on cots, four to a tent and there were biffies (outdoor latrines). But all our meals were made for us, including a packed lunch, and the daily hikes were organized and came with a leader and sweep. It was like glamping for the hardy and intrepid. My husband and I spent our days hiking the surrounding trails, each taking the hike that best suited our energy or abilities, making new friends by day and then reconvening at base later in the afternoon. The hikes ranged from easy to difficult, five to 25 kilometres, depending. I went on the easy jaunts a fossil hike, an 11-km wander to Marvel Lake, saving my ambition for the slog up to Assiniboine Lodge one day, where the organizers had kindly arranged afternoon tea. It was a challenging climb, with lots 7

of elevation, but the trip was worth it. Mount Assiniboine is a place of surreal beauty. The rustic wooden lodge overlooks a turquoise glacial lake, surrounded by wildflower meadows and larch trees, shadowed by silent snow-capped peaks. While I stuck to the easy low-elevation hikes during the week, my husband (a.k.a. the Billy Goat) tried the expert trails, scrambling up to Allenby and Wonder Pass for some otherworldly views of glaciers and fossil beds, wary marmots and curious long-horned sheep. At the end of every day, we would clean up with a quick sponge bath gratis a bowl of hot water in the washing tents a humbling but bonding group endeavour or by taking a frosty dip in the glacial creek. After dinner, people congregated around the campfire to sing in the main donut tent every camp comes with a musician and ours was the fun-loving and talented Teresa. As hokey as it may sound there is nothing like sitting around a fire, belting out Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah with a glorious full moon shining down on you from above. The meals were also scrumptious and satisfying. Scrambled eggs and fresh farm bacon for breakfast, BBQ pork chops and mashed potatoes at night, hot apple crisp for dessert. Despite the remote location, I always felt safe. The campsite was surrounded with an electric fence to keep out curious bears and cougars (not to mention wayward tourists!). There was even a medic, the affable Craig, who administered to my sorry feet, on more than one occasion, when he wasn t taping up his own. For those eager to go, there are five camps each summer starting from mid-july to mid- August. And each camp goes from Monday to Friday, with hikers walking back out on Saturdays. Every year the location changes (2019 will be in Sunset Pass, and the walk in is only 7 kilometres) to prevent irreversible environmental Hiking in the Canadian Rockies with Skyline Hikers Have you ever dreamed about hiking in the Rockies, but didn t know where to start? Allan Meyer of the Iroquoia Club will talk about his recent experience, costs, what can be expected and equipment that is needed. A talk on Hiking in the Canadian Rockies will be held at Hikers Haven, 166 South Service Rd E, Oakville, Ont. February 28th, 2019 at 7:00pm. Please to confirm your free spot to hikershaven@bellnet.ca. Space is limited so please respond early to guarantee a spot. damage. I was impressed with Skyline s commitment to the environment. Their volunteers go back to the camp site for three years afterwards to make sure the land returns to its former state. To date, Skyline is the only organized overnight adventure hiking camp in the Rockies, the only outfit where you can rough it while someone else takes care of the meals, transportation and accommodation. Although a certain level of fitness and hiking experience is suggested, our group consisted of teenagers and seniors. And Skyline s volunteers were the best, fit and fun, and generous to a fault. If you like Banff and hiking, and want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, put this baby on your bucket list. Contact: 8
