1 IROQUOIA FALL HIKES 2014 Iroquoia End to End (Wednesdays) Let s hike the Iroquois section as an End-to-End, once a month, for 10 easy hikes! Most of the hikes will be approx. 12 km. long, with a few exceptions. We will start in September, 2014 and finish in June, 2015 (weather permitting). Hikes are listed as E2E1, E2E2, etc. Hikes are listed in the Hikers R Us section of this newsletter. In the case of inclement weather (in the winter), we ll do a substitute hike in the Cambridge area and a make-up hike at a later date. *Please make sure you RSVP, so your leader can notify you about any last minute changes. Leader: RSVP: langlaislouise@gmail.com EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT CULHAM TRAIL MISSISSAUGA hrs Brisk pace. Meet at Riverwood Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga. The centre is located just north of Burnhamthorpe Rd. between Mississauga Rd and Creditview Rd on Riverwood Park Lane. We will meet at 6:00 pm. in the parking lot at the top of the hill and hike along the Culham trail. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Leader: Nancy Stevens nancystevens7@gmail.com EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT starts Aug Walk for Health and Fun (1.5hrs at a Moderate to Fast Pace) Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. Meet at 7:10 pm. at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Paradise in the Westcliffe Mall parking lot (near Food Basics). Come along for a brisk, aerobic walk. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. We will continue hiking sections of the Bruce Trail as long as daylight permits. Meet at Lions Club Pool Parking Lot, off Main St., just west of Mountain St. lights. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Hike Difficulty, Med. Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Sometimes uneven terrain, hike routes to be varied. Optional pub stop after hike. Meet at 7:30 pm. in the Lakeshore Road parking lot just east of the Waterfront Centre and restaurant for abrisk walk along Lake Ontario, to the canal and back. Hike cancelled in poor weather. 2 Lorne at or FEATURE HIKE Christmas Lunch and Hike (Everyone is welcome) Nov. 25 Al and Barb Hutchison would like to invite all Bruce Trail hikers and anyone that hiked with the slowpokes to come to a Christmas lunch and hike. The hike will start at Shell Park on the Lakeshore Rd. east of Burloak Drive in Oakville at 10:00 am. The hike is an hour and a half. The lunch will be at Tuckers Market Place on the South Service Road near Guelph Line in Burlington at 12:00 noon. We have reserved a room for the group and you must call Barb to register by November 18 so that she can confirm the numbers. This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with old and new friends. The hike will be on some trails, some street walking and some by the lake. In case of bad weather we will still have the lunch. GENERAL HIKES Thurs. Sept. 4 - Tyandaga Evening Walk - 6 km. (1.5 hrs) Meet at 7:00 pm at Kerncliff Park (old quarry) parking lot on Kerns Road, Burlington. Hike sections of the Bruce Trail and side trails while still light. Directions: Take Brant Street north, left on North Service Road to Kerns Road. Go North on Kerns Road to below the escarpment. Parking lot entrance is on your right. Please be aware that you no longer can come south on Kerns Road from Dundas Street. Hike Cancelled if there is heavy rain. Pace: Medium. Terrain: Moderate. This 17 km. shuttle hike will take approximately 5 hours and is at a medium pace over strenuous terrain. Map 8. There is no dropout point. No dogs please. Depart: 9:00 am. Tiffany Falls parking lot, at km 45.0, Wilson Street E, Ancaster. GPS Coordinates: N ', W ' Directions: Hike Description: An opportunity to visit Webster's Falls, Tews Falls, Canterbury Falls, Sherman Falls, and Tiffany Falls, all in the same hike. Meet for a 9:30 am. start in the parking lot of Chedoke Golf Club in the west end of Hamilton, off Aberdeen Avenue next to Hwy Go to the far east end of the parking area, facing the golf course (look for Chedoke Park on Map 8 of the Bruce Trail

3 Reference Guide, near km. 37.7). We ll hike up the Chedoke Radial Trail into Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area, looping around trails, then return. Turn on Hwy 7/8 to St Marys, turn right on Rd. 123 Water St, to parking lot behind tennis court across from old quarries. Car shuttle to Km Map 2, Line 33. Sept. 7 - Gentle hike at Mountsberg Conservation - +/- 4km Meet at 10:30 am. at Mountsberg Conservation Area in the parking area. From Highway 6 or Guelph Line follow Campbellville Road to Milburough Line and then go north for 1 km to park entrance. Halton Conservation Area pass or entrance fee applies. This is a loop walk. Meet for a 9:00 am. start from the Zehrs Parking lot at Fischer Hallman Rd. N. and Erb St. Waterloo. Schneider s Farm Waterloo is on the Waterloo Moraine and is The Best Kept Secret in Waterloo. Good trails through rolling hills - left by the last glacier. Great hike for kids, drop out at half way point if needed. Pace- medium. Terrain - moderate. Sept East Burlington Evening Walk - 5 km (1.5 hrs) Meet at 7:00 pm. at the SW corner of Appleby Mall parking lot on New Street and Appleby Line (By the Beer Store). Hike various streets and trails including the bike path and Sherwood Forest Park. Optional après hike stop for ice cream. Hike cancelled if there is heavy rain. Pace - moderate. Terrain - easy. Sept. 19, 20, 21 - Tobermory - 10km/day Enjoy an End of Summer Weekend of relaxed walking in the Tobermory area on the trails in the National Park, Burnt Point Loop, Cyprus Lake to Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shore. The views are too good to rush by, we will savour them gently. Our walks are slower and shorter than regular hikes, just right for new hikers and those wanting a relaxed weekend. We will see both Lake Huron and Georgian Bay at their highest levels in many years. We stay and have our meals at a comfortable hotel in Tobermory that overlooks Little Tub Harbour. 5 Sat. Sept hr. Doors Open Grimsby Historical Grimsby Beach Tour Meet at 10:00 am. Grimsby Beach Hall, 10 Grand Avenue. Historical Loop Tour. Grimsby Park, the Chautauqua of Canada, became the site of a summer-long Methodist revival event in 1859 and, over time, evolved into a colourful cottage resort and amusement park. Many of the distinctive Victorian cottages have been retained. Walking tours will re-tell the story of a week of murder, fire and the outbreak of the Great War in Pace - leisurely. Terrain - easy. Meet for a 9:30 am. start in the parking lot of Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek, off King Street next to Centennial Parkway (see Map 6 of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide). We ll car pool to the parking lot overlooking Albion Falls on Hamilton s east mountain (the lot with the sign King s Forest Park, on Mountain Brow Boulevard near Limeridge Road, see Map 7 of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide) Pace: Leisurely (3 km./hr. or less). Meet for a 10:00 am.. start in the parking lot of Hilton Falls Conservation Area on No. 5 Sideroad (also Campbellville Rd. and Regional Rd. 9). Map 11. We will explore the trails of the Conservation Area and Halton Agreement Forest. The loop will include the Falls twice and the Five Bridges Trail. Pace: Medium. Terrain: Moderate. Meet at 10:30 am. at Scottsdale Farm, Bennett Heritage Side Trail parking lot, Map 13 Ed Go north on Trafalgar Road. Enter from Trafalgar Road 1.7 km northwest of Highway 7. Oct. 5 - Bruce Trail in the Waterdown area - 15 km. Meet for a 9:00 am. start from km 67.6 map 9. From the centre of Waterdown take Main St. South, follow to Snake Rd. and continue to where Bruce Trail crosses, approx. 2 km. Today we walk through Waterdown Woods with lookouts to Burlington and Lake Ontario, past Grindstone Creek and Smoky Hollow. Pace- medium. Terrain - moderate. Meet for 9:30 am. start in the parking lot of Kerncliff Park on Kern s Road in Burlington, below the Escarpment. If arriving by car, access is only by driving northbound on Kern s Road. We ll car pool to the spot where the Bruce Trail reaches No. 1 Sideroad east of Guelph Line (see Map 9 of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide, km. 83.3) Pace: Leisurely (3 km./hr. or less). This 15 km. shuttle hike will take approximately 5 hours and is at a medium pace over moderate terrain. Map 11 & 12. There is no dropout point. No dogs please. Depart: 9:00 am. Sideroad 15 in Speyside, at km GPS Coordinates: N ', W ' Directions: Take Highway 25 north from the 401 to Speyside, turn right on Sideroad 15, and drive 500 metres to the meeting point, parking carefully on the side of the road. From there we will drive to the start and hike back. Hike Description: A great way to build up an appetite for Thanksgiving turkey. We will hike part of the Hilton Falls Side Trail, Vanderleck Side Trail, and the Speyside North and South Side Trails, linked together by part of the main trail. Oct. 18- Crawford Lake Interpretive Hike hrs Meet by 10:30 am. at the back of the Trail Centre at Crawford Lake for an interpretive walk of the area. This walk is in conjunction with the Giants Rib Discovery Centre. Entrance fee. Pace - leisurely. Terrain - moderate. Leader: Paul Toffoletti Sat. Oct City View Hike 1-18km Meet at 8:00 am. at the parking lot of Sam Lawrence Park km We will hike to Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area and then hike back. Oct. 17, 18, 19 - Tobermory - 10km/day Autumn Weekend of relaxed walking in the Tobermory area on the trails in the National Park, Burnt Point Loop, Cyprus Lake to Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shore. Oct Car Hike, Avon Trail (Map 6) - 16 km. Depart 8:30 am. Map 6. Km From Toronto west on Highway 401 to Highway 7/8. Turn off north to Conestoga Parkway, Hwy 85, right on Sawmill Rd left on Golf Course Rd. No dropouts, End to End #6 of 6, No dogs. Pace: Brisk Terrain: Moderate. Leader: Ron Granger, (519) pm. Sun. Oct STEPS, STEPS, STEPS, STEPS! - (3.5 hrs-4 hrs) An energetic way to start your Day! Back again this year! Meet at 9:00 am. at the top of the Chedoke Stairs on Scenic Drive at Upper Paradise on the West Mountain. We will then carpool to Albion Falls, and do all 7 sets of escarpment stairs, including the new Kenilworth & Uli s Stairs. In between the sets of stairs we will hike parts of the Bruce Trail and the Rail Trails. The fall colours should still be out! Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Pace - Medium. Terrain - moderate. Directions: From Garth Street take Scenic Drive west to Upper Paradise. The parking lot is on your right (across from the start of Upper Paradise) If there is no room in the parking lot you can park on the street. From the 403, take the Linc to Golf Links and turn left on Golf Links that becomes Mohawk. From there we shall drive to the start and hike back. Hike Description: The autumn of the year is a great time to enjoy the quiet of the woodlands. We will hike the Black Creek Side Trail, and the Canada Goose Side Trail, linked together by sections of the main trail. Nov Christmas Lunch and Hike (Everyone is welcome) Al and Barb Hutchison would like to invite all Bruce Trail hikers and anyone that hiked with the slowpokes to come to a Christmas lunch and hike. The hike will start at Shell Park on the Lakeshore Rd. east of Burloak Drive in Oakville at 10:00 am. The hike is an hour and a half. The lunch will be at Tuckers Market Place on the South service road near Guelph Line in Burlington at 12:00 noon. We have reserved a room for the group and you must call Barb to register by November 18th so Barb can confirm the numbers. This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with old and new friends. The hike will be on some trails, some street walking and some by the lake. In case of bad weather we will still have the lunch. Sept Meet in the municipal parking lot at the corner of Elgin and Brant St. in Burlington for a lakefront walk. (This parking lot is on Brant one block north of Lakeshore Blvd.) The après-hike pub stop will be the Beaver and Bulldog on Lakeshore Blvd. overlooking Burlington s new pier. Forever Autumn # 5 Tues. Sept. 30- Park in the lot beside William s coffee pub on Discovery Lane in Hamilton for an unexpectedly kinky walk in the north end. After you ve parked, meet at the front door of William s. (To get to William s, follow John St. north from downtown Hamilton to Guise St. at the end. Turn left on Guise and then immediately right on Discovery.) The après-hike pub stop will be Fisher s Pier 4 Pub and Grub place on James St N. at the corner of Wood St., two blocks south of the bay. Forever Autumn # 6 Tues. Oct. 7 - Meet at the dead end of Kelson Rd. near the south shore of Lake Ontario for a Lake Ontario waterfront walk. (Exit from the QEW at the Fifty Rd. interchange and cross over the QEW. Turn right on the North Service Rd. and go to Kelson Rd. Turn left on Kelson and go to the end.) The après-hike pub stop will be at the Innsville Hotel at the corner of Hwy. 8 and Lewis Rd. Forever Autumn # 7 Tues. Oct Meet at the top of the Wentworth St. mountain stairs in Hamilton for a loop walk along the Escarpment Rail Trail and Mountain Brow Blvd. (Take Upper Wentworth on the mountain north to Concession St. at the end. Dog-leg right on Concession then immediately left to continue on Upper Wentworth to the edge of the escarpment. Turn right for a few metres and then left into the first parking lot.) The aprèshike pub stop will be at Squire s in the plaza at the corner of Fennell Ave. and Upper Wentworth St. Forever Autumn # 8 Tues. Oct Meet in the parking lot of the RBG on Plains Rd. W. in Burlington. (We park in the part of the lot closest to the street behind the RBG.) Our loop hike will take us to a spit of land sticking out into Burlington Bay and through a part of Grindstone Creek Valley and nearby green spaces. The après-hike pub stop is a mystery, even to me.

Oct Meet on the shoulder of Ridge Rd. directly opposite the entrance to the parking lot of the Devil s Punch Bowl Conservation Area in upper Stoney Creek for a loop walk above and below the escarpment. Nov. 4 - Meet in the parking lot of Food Town at the corner of Mount Albion Rd. and Greenhill Ave. in lower east Hamilton for a loop walk in Red Hill Valley. (You can get there by taking the Greenhill Ave. exit from the Red Hill Valley Pkwy. Find us in the area of the parking lot on the east side of the building facing Mount Albion.) Forever Autumn # 12 Tues. Nov Meet in the parking lot under the hydro towers at the west end of Scenic Drive on Hamilton s west mountain. (This parking lot is located at the edge of the escarpment where the Chedoke Radial Trail reaches the top of the escarpment. It is also next to the east entrance to Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area. (See Km 40.6 of Map 8 in Edition 27 of The Bruce Trail Reference.) We ll do pub stop at Montana s in Ancaster s Meadowlesslands. Forever Autumn # 13 Tues. Nov Meet in the parking lot of Greensville Public School on Harvest Rd. in Greensville for a mystery walk. (Drive up the Dundas Hill on King St., aka Hwy. 8. At Bullock s Corners at the top of the hill, Hwy. 8 turns left, but you will go straight ahead onto Brock Rd. Drive to the flashing light, and turn right on Harvest Rd. At the top of the hill, turn left into the school parking lot which is at the far end of the building.) Sept Calcium Pits - 9km. Meet at the rear of the school in Kilbride. Take Brant St. then Cedar Springs Rd. north to Kilbride. Turn right at the first stop sign, then left at the next stop sign. We will hike this very diverse section of the Bruce Trail (old stone walls, tree plantations ) out to the Calcium pits and back. Leisurely, some poor footing. Wed. Oct. 1 - Beautiful Burlington - 10 km. Meet at the rear parking lot for the Central Library on New St. in Burlington.We will walk the Pathways, Pier and Parks out to the lighthouse and back. Leisurely, flat Wed. Oct. 8 - North Agreement Forest - 10 km. Meet at the hidden parking lot on 4 th Line (Nassagaweya). Take Guelph Line to Sideroad 10, north of the 401Hwy and Mohawk Raceway. Turn right on SR.10. It then becomes 4 th. Line. The parking lot is on the right. A beautiful walk in the woods. Leisurely, flat. Wed. Oct.15 - Dundas Peak - 10 km. Meet in the West Flamborough Town hall parking lot on Brock Rd. in Greensville, opposite the Optimists parking lot. We will hike out to the Peak.The fall colours should be spectacular, at their best. Leisurely, some hills. Wed. Oct Lowville - 10 km. Meet in the parking lot on the right in Lowville, off Guelph Line. We will hike the` River and Ruin` trail then follow the river down through the park. There is some new construction ongoing to enhance the Park. Leisurely, some hills. Wed. Oct Coronation Park - 10 km. Meet in the parking lot of the Coach and Four in Bronte. We will walk the Waterfront Trail to Coronation Park and back.
