ICE STORM THE WORST ICE STORM TO HIT SOUTHERN ONTARIO IN RECENT MEMORY - SOME PARTS OF THE BRUCE TRAIL AFFECTED Not the way we wanted 2014 to start out. But there you have it; branches down and thousands of trees damaged. This is just one section of the BT in the Burlington area that received the brunt of the storm. Almost all Conservation Area trails as well as local municipal trails in the vicinity remained closed inbetween Christmas and New Years Day. Now the clean up begins. Safety must be of prime concern. One of the hazards a storm of this magnitude brings with it is the damage to trees particularly top branches that have been broken off but still have not fallen to the ground. Bruce Trail volunteers have guidelines for working in such. Here is a reminder of some basic measures to be taken. Never work alone. A minimum of two volunteers working as a team will help reduce the risk of possible injury. But under these conditions, three volunteers working together is strongly recommended; one volunteer to function as a spotter looking out for overhead branches that could be a threat, and two volunteers to work at clearing debris off of the trail. Working in extremely cold weather should also be avoided. Safety equipment is strongly recommended; hard hats, safety goggles, work boots and icers. If a chain saw is required, only a certified sawyer is permitted to do the cutting, wearing the latest standard of personal safety gear. All of the supporting volunteers and equipment must also be in place. Dress warmly, bring a lunch and something hot to drink. And don t try to clean up the area in one day, there s still tomorrow. Remember, if the job is bigger than 2-3 volunteers can handle, ask for help by TREADWAY Editor Don Cangiano JANUARY

New Year s Day Hike 2014 New Year s Day, 2014 was good time to get out and start the year on a good foot (pardon the pun) with Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club s annual hike. This year the hikes were held at the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. The day was sunny, with cloudy periods and temperatures around -10 degrees. Despite the effects of a severe ice storm before Christmas, the trails, although somewhat icy, were in good shape and Conservation Hamilton staff had managed to clear away any tree branches and other debris brought down by heavy ice loads. Three one hour hikes and one two hour hike were offered, led by IBTC hike leaders. Although the dog hike only attracted two dogs, we hope to try it again next year. Approximately 74 hikers came out to enjoy the trails followed by refreshments in the Centre afterwards. Two lucky participants walked away with door prizes from Adventure Attic in Dundas. Everyone who came out also received money off coupons from Adventure Attic. FIRST AID TRAINING Attention all active hike leaders with the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club. You are invited to take part in a two day First Aid Training course being offered by IBTC. The course will be given by Michelle Madderson of ProVision Safety Training. 5 2014 OFFICIAL IROQUOIA END TO END DATES October 25th and 26th November 1st and 2nd The annual Iroquoia Club End to End is held in four hikes over two weekends. This is a challenging but richly rewarding series of hikes "Midweek hikers enjoying a hike along the Sixteen Mile Creek in Oakville. The ice in the river was quite spectacular with some ice sheets measuring more than 12 to 15 inches in thickness. PHOTO CREDIT - DAVID LAMB Boot Camp Iroquoia End to End Bruce Trail Boot Camp is the perfect way to get in shape and complete an end-to-end of the Iroquoian Section of the Bruce Trail. We will be walking at a brisk pace which means 4-5 km per hour and the terrain will be moderate which means some hills and/or some poor footing - but nothing you can t do Hikes are on Sundays, approximately 15 km. each. We will be meeting at a different start point every week. A taxi will drop us at our end point; we will then hike back to our cars. On our last day, June 22, we will be awarding badges to everyone who has completed each week, as well as hosting a campfire cookout at Hilton Falls to celebrate. All of this will be only $65 per person; with any overages collected being donated to the Bruce Trail. You will be required to wear proper hiking shoes. Running shoes or sandals will not be permitted. To register for these hikes, please call Holly at <tel: > or hollysluiter@yahoo.ca. The first hike will be on Sunday April 27th and all hikes will start at 10:00 am. There will be only 16 spots available in this group. 5

Into The Wild Blue Yonder by Richard Reble By way of introduction, I've been leading hikes for the Iroquoia Bruce Trail for about 22 or 23 years. I have the reputation of being a fast hiker. This is true, but only on flat ground with good footing. Depending on the roughness of the terrain, my pace slackens to brisk or, as infrequently as possible, medium. The article below may be of interest to hikers who favour a fast or brisk pace, not leisurely. Under a new scheme to be introduced in spring 2014 Iroquoian BTC, the hike-ratings criteria are as follows: Pace - Leisurely - 3km/hr or less Medium - 3 to 4 km/hr. Brisk - 4 to 5 km/hr. Fast km/hr. Terrain - Easy - Mostly flat and usually good footing Moderate - Some hills and/or some poor footing Strenuous - Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing My purpose in writing is to find who might be interested in doing hikes which explore the significant blue-blazed trails between Niagara and Tobermory, excluding mere access trails and blue trails on boring bits of road. I led a blue-trail series several years ago under the title Where In the Blue Blazes Are We? (perfect, eh?), but, in pursuit of originality, I'm looking for a different title this time. That's why I've decided to go with Into The Wild Blue Yonder. And just for the helluvit (and because I love music), I've decided to make our theme song a jazz number called Blue Miles which you can listen to by clicking on Blue loops are constructed by combining blue-blazed trails with the Bruce Trail at their start point and end point. The Bruce Trail is the connecting piece that closes the loop. This has several advantages: 1) Since each blue-blazed trail can be hiked as a loop, time-consuming car shuttles are not necessary. Everybody's car stays in one spot. 2) Since two, three, or even four loops can sometimes be accomplished in one day, it means that hikers get brief rests while driving from one loop to the next. 3) Injured or tired hikers, if they wish, can drop out at the end of any loop without having to do all of the loops scheduled for one day. 4) People who have hiked the Bruce Trail from end to end can satisfy their curiosity about the blue trails they have by-passed along the way. 5) Doing blue loops with connecting bits of the Main Trail is like doing an abbreviated version of the Bruce Trail, a good approach for people who want to see what the Bruce Trail experience is like but who don't have time to do all of it. 6) Since there is no badge awarded for doing all the blue trails, hikers can miss an occasional hike without feeling a compulsion to go back to do what they missed. There are still many details to work out, but for now I'm merely interested in seeing if there is sufficient interest to merit all the planning the series will entail. I realize it's too early for you to commit to Into the Wild Blue Yonder, but I'm intending to spell out the details by mid-march. If you would like to receive them, please send me your first and last name and I'll enter you into an distribution list. My address is richardreble@gmail.com Once you have considered the details, you'll be better able to decided whether you want to remain in the distribution list or not. I look forward to hearing from hikers appropriately qualified for such a series of hikes. 6

2013 Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club End-to-End Congratulations to the tough, dedicated and waterproof hikers who completed this year's Official Club End-to-End on October 19, 20, 26 & 27. The hikers this year received the special 50th Anniversary badge. Hikers did not have to complete our section in the four days, but many did. As long as they completed our section in 2013, they received the badge. This year was the biggest year yet with over 111 hikers registered for one or more days. Many, many thanks to the volunteers who helped in many ways. We all appreciate the checkpoint people for their contributions of food, but also for the greater gift of time and standing around for hours in all sorts of weather. We thank you sweeps who encourage and keep everyone safe. If I had to single out a special volunteer, this year would have to be Suzanne Fields. She helped sweep the first day of over 39 km, and most of all stayed at the end the last day to look for a lost hiker until after 6:00. We found him safe and sound, and I thank her for her support. I am not saying that any of the other volunteers did not go above and beyond, especially considering the horrid weather. I know I will miss naming a volunteer and I am very sad about that, but I want to recognize, by name, as many as I can. Thanks to the following volunteers who were tested this year through cold, wind, snow and freezing rain, ice pellets, torrential downpours, sun (a little, very little) and gloom of night. Jeanne Keldson & Errol Mackenzie, Anne Armstrong, Brian & Cheryl Duke, Kathy Wilson & Jim Anderson, Bruce Manion & Carly, Gary Wrathall, Lois Corey & friends, Connie Rusynyk & Charlotte Stewart, Eleanor Tasker, Marion Roggeband, Barb Yeo, Chris Mcgonagle, Suzanne Fields. We would like to thank all volunteers I missed - we could not run this event without you by Dan Welsh & Elaine Zelenyt On behalf of the Iroquoia Club, a huge THANK YOU to Dan Welsh and Elaine Zelenyt, who work so hard to make this a great event for all those involved Caledon Hills Sideways The Caledon Hills Club has 71 km of Main Trail and 55 km of side trails. So almost 44% of the trails maintained by volunteers are marked with blue blazes. Too often they are overlooked. In addition to interesting scenery, they usually have a history quite often they signify the generosity of a landowner or the long- time contributions of a volunteer. As part of the Caledon Club 50 th Anniversary celebrations in 2014, the Club is putting on a special series of hikes to include most of the side trails in Caledon. Nineteen of the side trails have been grouped into Mive clusters. Some have not been included in the program because they are rather isolated or primarily road links. There will be a special badge to be awarded on completion of all 5 clusters either on your own, or on the organized hikes that will be offered in the Spring and Summer of 2014 or mix and match. To qualify for the badge you just have to do all 19 side trails in the list. (Including the South Outlier in Mono Cliffs which is really part of the Dufferin Hi- Lands Section but will round out the day nicely). The website will have more details. 7

You are invited to attend, but do so at your own risk All map and kilometer notations are from the 27th Edition of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide, unless otherwise stated. Please judge your abilities appropriately according to the hike ratings: Pace /Speed of hike Leisurely 3 km/hr or less Medium km/hr Brisk. 4-5 km/hr Fast.. 5 km/hr + Difficulty of terrain: Mostly flat and usually good footing.. EASY Some hills and/or and poor footing. MODERATE Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing. STRENUOUS Notice to all hikers. Be honest with yourself when judging the length, speed and difficulty of the hike you wish to attend. If in doubt call the leader. Notice for hikers: if you are parking at Tiffany Falls you will be able to display your BTC membership card on your vehicle dashboard instead of paying. However this is the only Hamilton Conservation Area parking spot where this can be done. Please do not attempt it anywhere else New HIKE RATING For Spring 2014 In an effort to bring some consistency to Hike Management throughout the Bruce Trail Clubs, all club hiking directors have been meeting and corresponding with each other. As a result of this, new hike ratings criteria have been developed and been adopted by nearly all clubs. This means that pace and terrain are rated the same in most clubs so that in the event of anyone hiking with another club, such as Beaver Valley, will find the ratings are the same. The new criteria for rating hikes is listed below in the HIKING section. If you don t understand what Pace - Leisurely and Terrain Moderate means, just check the list. Thank you for your patience in this. As with any changes, it takes a little time to get used to them. 9
