1 Iroquoia Spring Hikes 2013 Be sure to make a habit of checking out the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club website for any information pertaining to corrections, missed or added hikes to the schedule. WEEKLY WALKS EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT - Walk for Health and Fun (1.5hrs at a Fast Pace) Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. Meet at 7:10 pm. at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Paradise in the Westcliffe Mall parking lot (near Food Basics). Come along for a brisk, aerobic walk. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Starting in April (when evening daylight returns), we will start hiking sections of the Bruce Trail as well. Leader: Paul Lewis - (905) or outdooractive@hotmail.com EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Culham Trail Mississauga ( 1.5hrs at a moderate to fast pace) Meet at Riverwood Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga. The centre is located just north of Burnhamthorpe Rd between Mississauga Rd and Creditview Rd on Riverwood Park Lane. We will meet at the parking lot closest to VA Centre and hike along the Culham trail. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Hike will switch to neighbourhood walks with the early onset of darkness in the late fall. Please advise hike leader if you plan to attend. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Hike Difficulty Med. Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Sometimes uneven terrain, hike routes to be varied. Optional pub stop after hike. Meet at 7:30 pm. in the Lakeshore Road parking lot just east of the Waterfront Centre and restaurant for a brisk walk along Lake Ontario, to the canal and back. Hike cancelled in poor weather. 2 GENERAL HIKES Sat. Mar. 2 - Red Hill Valley - 7/8 kms. Meet for a 10:00 am. start at the Mud Street parking lot near Pritchard Road in East Hamilton Mountain. We will car-pool to Van Wagner's Beach and hike back on the Red Hill Valley Trail. Mod - 3. Partly on maps 6 & 7. Leader: Vern Erickson , verickson@cogeco.ca. Sat. Mar. 2 - Niagara Queenston kms. Meet at 8:30 am. Map 2, Km Merritt Trail parking area on north side of Glendale Ave. Car shuttle to Km 0.0 Map 1. Hike back through Queenston Heights, Woodend Conservation Areas and the Welland Canal. Med Difficult, variable and challenging. No dogs and no dropout points. Pub stop after. Hiking Boots. Leader: Ron Granger - (519) pm. Sat. Mar. 2 - War of 1812 Friendship March # 7 - Aprox. 3 hrs. Meet for a 10:00 am. start. War of 1812 historical hike revolving around the 200 years of friendship between the USA and Canada. Meet at the parking lot of Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake on the Niagara Parkway for a loop hike. Learn about the great and not so great battles, famous and infamous people who played key roles in the war of This is the Bicentennial year of the Niagara Battles. Sat. Mar. 9 - Niagara, Short Hills km. Meet 8:30 am. Map 3, Km 45.1 Rockway Community Centre just east of Wessel Dr. Park on east side of the building. We car shuttle to K.m 21.9, Map 2, and hike back past Brock University and Short Hills Provincial Park. Med - 4.5, Difficult, variable and challenging, No dogs and no dropout points. Pub stop after. 3 Sat. Mar. 9 - Burlington-Waterdown - Approx. 8 km. 3 hrs. Meet for 9:30 am. departure in Kerncliff Park parking lot, 2198 Kern s Road, Burlington (just below Escarpment). See Map 9 of Bruce Trail guide (27 th edition), look for parking symbol P on north side of Kern s Road. Note: You cannot drive south on Kern s Road from Dundas Street (former Hwy. 5) to this park. Hike to Smokey Hollow in Waterdown and back. Pub stop lunch to follow. Mod Any questions, call or no later than Friday daytime before hike. Mar. 9 - Highway To Highway km Meet for a 9:00 am. start at the Tim Horton s parking lot at the corner of Hwy 5 (Dundas Street) and Hwy 6. Meet at 7:00 pm. at the parking lot in front of Christ the King Cathedral on King St. W. beside the on-ramp to Hwy. 403 for a walk along west Hamilton s waterfront. Med Optional pub after. Meet for 9:30 am. departure in the front parking lot of Crawford Lake Conservation Area, at Guelph Line and Conservation Road, south of Campbellville. Admission fee of $ 7.50 per adult ($6.50 for 65 +, $5.25 for children 5-14), unless you have an annual pass. Loop hike. Pub stop lunch to follow. Meet for a 10:00 am. start in front of East Side Mario's, University Plaza on Osler Drive in Dundas. We will do a loop hike in the Dundas Valley on or near the Monarch Trail. Mod - 3, map 8. Meet for a 10:00 am. start on Leslie Dr. Km 18.7 (right off New Mountain Rd) We will hike through the Devil s Punch Bowl, and then on to Felker s Falls and back again. Med -5. Map 6. Kinsmen Community Park, off of Mountain Rd. We car shuttle to Km. 45.1, Map 3 and hike back through Louth and Ball's Falls Conservation Areas. Med Difficult, variable and challenging. No dogs and no dropout points. Hiking Boots. Leader: Ron Granger (519) pm. Sun. Mar Lynn Valley Trail - 22 km. Depart at 9:30 am. from Memorial Park, Simcoe. Hwy 24 south through Simcoe to Victoria St. to Woodhouse Ave. to Memorial Park. We will walk from Simcoe to Port Dover on a good rail trail and retrace our steps after lunch, looking for hints of spring. This Spring we will hike three of this area's best rail trails, Lynn Valley, 24 March, Kissing Bridge 20,21 April and Paris to Cambridge Trail 25,26 May. Med - 2. Meet for 10:00 am. start in the Hermitage parking lot of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area on Sulphur Springs Rd. in Ancaster. Be careful, it is easy to miss. Map 8. We will do a loop of this lovely area. We may be lucky enough to see some deer. Some hills. Mod - 3. Bring a lunch, water and icers. Parking fee ($9) or Hamilton Conservation Area pass. Annual Good Friday Hawkwatch Open House at Beamers Conservation Area. Meet for a 9:00 am. start at Lions Club pool in Grimsby on Main Street. Mar Sulphur & Spring Creek Trails km. Meet for a 10:00 am. start at the Sanctuary Park parking lot in Pleasant Valley, Dundas. We will do a loop hike on the Spring and Sulphur Creek Trails. Mar Splitrock Narrows & Monocliffs, Dufferin Section Starting at 10:00 am. meet at the fenced parking lot at Splitrock narrows, trail map 19.

5 Take Highway #10 north from Orangeville to Sideroad 25, turn right, follow to 2 nd Line EHS, turn left, and drive 1.5 kilometres to the fenced parking lot on the right hand side of the road. We will hike a distance of 14 kilometres at a moderate pace, on a new side trail at our recent acquisition of the scenic Splitrock narrows property, as well as the trails of one of our favourite haunts, Mono Cliffs. A great warm up to inspire us for the new season. Hiking boots required, bring one litre of drinking water and a snack lunch. Dogs permitted, but must be leashed and owners scoop the poop. Apr. 1 - EAST BURLINGTON EVENING WALK hrs Meet at 7:00 pm. at SW corner of Appleby Mall parking lot on New St. and Appleby Line. (Near The Beer Store) Hike various streets and trails including the bike path and Sherwood Forest Park. Optional après hike stop for ice cream or chicken wings. Allan School in lower west Hamilton for a loop walk on the South Shore Trails of Cootes Paradise. Take King St. to Bond, one block west of traffic light at Longwood Rd. The school is on the corner. Apr. 6 - Niagara,Grimsby km. Depart 8:30 am. Km 9.2, Map 6. Roadside parking at the top of the Escarpment on Fifty Rd. We car shuttle to Km 66.9, Map 4, and hike back through Mountainview, Thirty Mile Creek, Beamer and Woolverton Conservation Areas. Med Difficult, variable and challenging. Meet for a 10:00 am. start at the Lions Club pool parking lot on Jerseyville Road in Ancaster. We will do a loop hike on the Headwaters and other nearby trails. Mod - 3. South-West of map 8. Leader: Vern Erickson , verickson@cogeco.ca. Sun. Apr. 7 - KIDS HIKE /Explore Devil s Punch Bowl km. Meet for an 11:00 am. start on Leslie Dr. Km (right off New Mountain Rd) for a kid friendly hike. 6 Sun. Apr. 7 - Mount Nemo. Meet for a 1:30 pm. start in the parking lot of Mount Nemo Conservation Area on the east side of Guelph Line, north of Highway 5. We will do a loop hike of the area. Mod -4. Map 10. Bring a snack and water. Hiking books recommended as trail may be muddy. Conservation Area fee in effect or Conservation Area Pass (which supports the good work done by our local conservation authority). Will not proceed if raining. Meet at 7:00 pm. at the entrance to Binbrook Conservation Area for a brand new loop walk in the conservation area grounds. Take Hwy. 56 south from Rymal Rd. to Binbrook. Keep heading south on Hwy. 56 to Kirk Rd., one concession past the town. Turn right on Kirk and go to Harrison, the next road left. Apr Caledon Hills, Caledon Section Starting at 9:00 am. meet at Km. 46.6, trail map 18. Take Airport Road north to the Taoist Tai Chi Centre at Mono 5 th Side Road, turn right, and drive 0.5 kilometres to where the trail crosses. We will hike a distance of 14 kilometres at a moderate pace, on a section of Main Trail to the south of Hockley Valley, as well as the Hockley Crest Side Trail, the Hemlock Ridge Side trail, and the Glacier Valley Side Trail. Dress appropriately for the unpredictable Spring weather, wear your hiking boots, bring plenty of drinking water and a snack lunch. No dogs permitted. Meet for a 10:00 am. start at the 4-Ice Centre, located on Mountain Brow, between Limeridge and Mohawk Roads in Hamilton. We will car shuffle to the Devil's Punchbowl and hike back, visiting four of Hamilton's bowl waterfalls on the way. Bring lunch and water, bug spray, sun block. Depart at 9:00 am. from the parking area where the Kissing Bridge Trailway crosses Arthur St. N..5 km north of the centre of Elmira, map on Greg's website. Today we will walk from Millbank to Elmira through great central Ontario farmland enjoying the spring flowers along the way. This Spring we will hike three of this area's best rail trails, Lynn Valley, 24 March, Kissing Bridge, 20,21 April and Paris to Cambridge Trai l 25,26 May. Med - 2. Meet for a 9:30 am. start at the Mountsberg Conservation Area, Milborough Line, north of Campbellville Road. We will hike a loop including Pioneer Creek Trail, Sugarbush and Lookout Trails. Parking fee in effect or use your Conservation Area Pass (reduced rate for Bruce Trail members when you purchase a pass). Med - 3. Wear hiking boots and bring lunch/snack and water. Meet at 9:30 am. in the parking lot of Scotsdale Farm, east of Trafalgar Rd., north of Highway 7, Georgetown. (Easy to miss.) We will carpool to the the baseball diamond parking lot on the east side of Fifth Line in Limehouse, just south of 22 Sideroad and hike back to Scotsdale Farm. Maps 12/13. Mod - 3/4. 8 Sun. Apr STEPS, STEPS, STEPS, STEPS! - (3 hrs-4 hrs) Meet for a 9:00 am. start at the top of the Chedoke Stairs on Scenic Drive at Upper Paradise on the West Mountain. We will carpool to the parking lot near Albion Falls and hike back. We will do all 7 sets of escarpment stairs, including the Kenilworth stairs and Uli s stairs. In between the sets of stairs we will hike parts of the Bruce Trail and the Rail Trails. Med Directions: From Garth Street take Scenic Drive west to Upper Paradise. The parking lot is on your right (across from the start of Upper Paradise). If there is no room in the parking lot you can park on the street. From the 403, take the Linc to Golf Links and turn left on Golf Links, which becomes Mohawk. Meet at the Peach King Centre on Livingston Ave. in Grimsby for a 10:00 am. start of a loop hike to Beamers CA to see the migrating hawks soar high above Grimsby. We will hike various trails in Kerncliffe Park including portions of the Bruce Trail. Come and enjoy the longer evening daylight! Optional apres hike pub stop. Med - 4. Directions: Take Brant St. north to North Service Rd, left on the North Service Rd. to Kerns, right on Kerns, then north to the parking lot, which will be on the right just past where the houses end, but before the parking lot on your left as you go up the hill.

Km. 55.2, Map 8. Roadside parking on Woodley Lane near King St West. We car shuttle to Km. 33.4, Map 7, and hike through Chedoke Park and Iroquoia Heights, Tiffany Falls and Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Med Difficult, variable and challenging. No dogs and no dropout points. Leader: Ron Granger (519) pm. Sat. May 4 - Owen Sound, Sydenham Section An Adventure to Tobermory Year3. Using trail maps 31 & 32, we will hike 16 km. after meeting at 10:00 am. in Clearview Crescent, near Km To get there, take Highways # 6 or 10 north of Chatsworth to the traffic lights at Rockford. Turn right on Grey Road #18, follow east to Grey Road #11, turn left, and follow to Highway 26. Turn left on Highway 26, follow for one kilometre to Clearview Crescent on the right, where you park carefully and neatly on the shoulder. From there we will shuttle to the start and hike back. Wear hiking boots, bring plenty of drinking water, a snack lunch, and sunscreen. No dogs permitted, and no dropout points. May 4 - Dofasco Trail and Meet the Alpacas - Approx. 8 km. 4 hrs. Meet for 9:30 a.m. departure at Devil s Punchbowl Conservation Area on the east mountain in Hamilton-Stoney Creek. Car pool to Eighth Road East, then hike back through the Vinemount South Swamp (relax, no gators or snakes & there is a boardwalk) along a flat pathway. After, we visit the nearby farm of the Alpacas from Eighth & Mud, for lunch (bring your own) and a farm tour. Meet more than two dozen resident Alpacas and see how the extremely soft but resilient yarn is made from these friendly animals native to South America. On-site gift shop sells yarn, finished clothing, and fruit preserves. Driving directions to Devil s Punchbowl: Exit from Upper Centennial Parkway (former Hwy 20) on to Ridge Road, drive about 1.5 kilometres. You exit to Centennial Parkway from the Niagara-bound QEW. From there, it s about four kilometres south and up the Escarpment to Ridge Road (on your left). Any questions call

We will do a loop hike on the Bruce & McCormack Trails. Mod - 3, Map 8 Leader: Vern Erickson , verickson@cogeco.ca. Sun. May 5 - Inglis Fall, Sydenham Section An Adventure to Tobermory Year3. Using trail map 32 & 33, we will hike 21 km. after meeting at 8:00 am. at Inglis Falls, near km To get there, take Highway 6 or 10 north from Chatsworth to the traffic light at Rockford. Turn left on Grey Road # 18 and follow west for approximately 1 kilometre to the entrance to Inglis Falls on the right, and park in the parking lot. From there we will shuttle to the start and hike back. Wear hiking boots, bring plenty of drinking water, a snack lunch, and sunscreen. No dogs permitted, and no dropout points. May 6 - Tew s Falls / Webster s Falls Evening Walk in the Spring (1.5 to 2 hours) Meet for a 7:00 pm. start at the Greensville School parking lot, located on Harvest Road in Greensville. We will hike various trails in the area, including a portion of the Bruce Trail past Tew s Falls, Dundas Peak, and Webster s Falls. Come and see the waterfalls when the water flow is still high!
