1 Welcome to the NW Regional Conference. Here is some information to help plan your time in Portland. We have planned a fun time for you and a chance to walk some very beautiful areas in Oregon and at Mt. St. Helens in Washington. If you have specific questions not answered in this handout, please feel free to contact us: Dick Baker dickbkr@q.com or Maryann Brown at otsva@walkoregon.org Getting to Portland State University PSU Guest Services Assistant daytime and on call at (503) Arriving from the airport: LIGHT RAIL The MAX Light Rail (Red Line) is the least expensive way to get from the airport to Portland State. The trip will take about 40 minutes to get to the Pioneer Plaza where you will need to transfer to the Yellow or Green line going to Portland State. It will take about 5 minutes once on the yellow or green line to get to the 5th and Jackson Stop where you will get off. When you exit turn right to College St then left to 6 th Av. Ondine will be on your right. The maximum wait at Pioneer Plaza for the transfer should be less than 10 minutes. Adult tickets cost $2.50 one way and seniors 65 and over cost $1. They are good for 2 hours. You can roll your luggage on board. The airport stop is located on the baggage carousel level near carousel 2. Signs are clearly visible showing you where to go. There are 2 ticket machines inside and 2 outside. They will take cash or credit cards. The first train leaves at 4:45 am and the last at 11:50pm. The trains leave at a maximum of 20 minutes. 15 minutes maximum on workdays during working hours. BLUE STAR SHUTTLES leave every 30 minutes from the airport and will take you directly to where you want to go downtown. (Ondine Hall, 1912 SW 6 th Ave., Portland) They cost $14 for one way and $24 for both ways. You do share the shuttle with others. Call to make a reservation. TAXIS Taxis cost an average of $35 before gratuity. Radio Cab offers a discount with coupons available on their website. Arriving by car Do not park in the garage before getting your parking pass, as they will ticket you. If you are arriving by car and planning to pay for parking using Portland State Facilities, it is recommended by the staff that you pay for street parking for a short period of time so that you can check in with Summer Conferencing Housing to get your parking pass. Walks The three Portland Walks and the Salem walk are on paved city streets with lots of stores and other businesses along the route. Bathrooms, water and some eats can be obtained along the routes. Footing is good with a few small exceptions. For the Silver Falls and Mt St. Helens walks, we recommend that you bring hiking poles, good hiking shoes, snacks, and water. Bathrooms are at the start and finish for the Mt St Helens walks unless you are doing the 20 km walk on the Hummock and Boundary trails which has Johnson Ridge Observatory near the half way mark. At Silver Falls there are bathrooms at the start finish and at the 7 km checkpoint. Fees, Permits and Food At Silver Falls, there is a $5 per vehicle fee to park. We strongly encourage carpooling. There are no fees at the Mt St Helens walk unless you go into one of the buildings where a $8 fee is charged. Mt. St. Helens does accept all Federal Government special passes like the Golden Age or Senior Pass. You can enter the Johnson Ridge Observatory for bathroom and water without paying. The start and finish at Mt St. Helens has indoor bathrooms and water and no fees are charged. At Mt. St. Helens there is only a small snack trailer to get food. We recommend that you consider bringing a lunch to the walk. There are a limited number of picnic tables in the start/finish area. 4
