2 TWIN RIVERS COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA 253 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, New York MAHIKAN DISTRICT Serving Columbia and Rensselaer Counties and the Village of Waterford December 2014 Hello Cubmaster, The Mahikan District Snow n Do will take place at Rotary Scout Reservation on Sunday, January 25, We hope every pack in the district participates, and also extend an invitation to packs outside of our District or Council. The task: Each den is on a challenging outdoor trek through the wilderness. On this trek you must overcome all obstacles that you encounter, help anyone that is in need, and safely reach your destination. For their efforts, each participating Cub Scout will receive a 2015 Snow n Do patch, and each participating pack will receive a flagstaff ribbon. Participating packs should register by January 9, 2015 to get the early bird rate of $8.00 per person. If you have additional Cubs who decide to come after that date they can be registered on the day of the event, but we would like to have some idea of how many Cubs and adults to expect. After January 9, 2015, the cost becomes $9.00 per person. So, register early and save!!! The attached registration form is part of this packet. Please list the number of dens and estimate the number of Cubs. The registration form along with your payment should be mailed as soon as possible (see form for address). 4 General Information REGISTRATION You can register individual Cub Scouts on line at LUNCH All participants should bring a good lunch to provide energy to keep warm and perform well at the various activities. This should include high energy snacks, like granola or cereal bars, and fruits. Packs will be given a time in their schedule where they can go to Seneca Lodge Porch to eat lunch and warm up. CLOTHING POLICY The Snow n Do is a full day outdoor winter event held at a location that is usually several degrees colder and much windier than the general Capital District. We want everyone to have fun and be comfortable. Dressing for the weather makes it much more likely that Scouts will stay warm and dry. Den and Pack leaders should conduct a winter clothing training session with Cub Scouts as part of their Snow n Do preparations. A list of suggested clothing is included in this packet. PARKING All vehicles must be parked in the upper lot at Rotary Scout Reservation. A limited number of 4-wheel drive and off road vehicles will be used inside the Camp to support the Snow n Do events. CHECK-IN ON SNOW N DO DAY Please complete the Pack Snow n Do check-in form, including the roster with names of all participants, before you arrive at the Check-In station. Have the balance of your Pack s registration fee ready at the time you check in. Check-In will start at 8:30 AM at the Camp Office. At Check-In, each leader will receive an information packet containing instructions, maps, event order, and start times. Make sure these don t get lost! STAFF HEADQUARTERS, FIRST AID STATION AND WARMING STATIONS Seneca Lodge, on the waterfront, will be Snow n Do headquarters. Seneca Lodge will also serve as a Warming and First Aid Station. All medications are to be stored here. Adult leaders should escort ill or injured Cub Scouts to Seneca Lodge. A den may continue without an ill or injured Cub Scout, provided that enough adults are present to cover them. ADULT VOLUNTEERS Any adult leader who is available to volunteer on the Snow n Do staff is encouraged to do so. Please indicate your availability and preference area (if any) on the registration form that your pack sends in. There will be a staff meeting for all Snow n Do staff at 8:00 AM at Seneca Lodge for instructions and to answer any questions. HOT CHOCOLATE Each pack is asked to bring a large can (not packets, please) of hot chocolate mix to be turned in at registration. It will be prepared at Seneca Lodge and will be available all day to Snow n Do participants as needed. Also, please bring your own disposable cups.

5 TRASH REMOVAL Please be prepared to carry out what you carried in!!! NO SNOWBALLS Offending Cub Scouts will be asked to leave the Snow n Do. SMOKING POLICY Please, out of sight of the Cub Scouts. CANCELLATION Winter weather can be unpredictable. For safety reasons, it is possible that this event could be canceled up to the morning it is held. In the event that cancellation is required, we will make notification to the contact person on the registration form and the pack s Cubmaster in as timely a manner as possible.

6 How To Dress For The Snow n Do Don t wear your Cub Scout uniform to this event. It is not made for the active events that are planned. It will not keep you warm enough for this event. You will be outside most of the day. The following clothing plan is suggested: BASE LAYER Long underwear synthetic (polypropylene) fabric or silk are best. Sock liners again synthetic or silk is much preferred to cotton. INSULATION LAYER Sweatshirt and sweatpants. Cotton is not a good choice. Material like Polarfleece is the best choice. Wear wool or fleece socks. WIND / WATERPROOF LAYER Parka and snow / ski pants or snowmobile suit. NO BLUE JEANS. Cotton gets wet and carries heat away from the body. Wet blue jeans are a direct route to hypothermia. BOOTS Snow boots are better than hiking boots. If it is leather, it is probably not waterproof. NO TENNIS SHOES. HAT Stocking cap, not a baseball cap or Scout hat that covers the ears. MITTENS Better than gloves, which separate the fingers and do not keep the hands as warm. Water repellant is better. The goal is to stay warm and dry. Multiple layers trap heat near the body and keep you warmer. Layers can be removed or added as you heat up or cool off. Don t forget these important items as well: DAY PACK Useful to store extra layers of clothing, mittens, socks, water bottle, and high energy foods to snack on. WATER BOTTLE It is just as easy to get dehydrated in the cold as in the heat. Drinking water is very important. Put this in the day pack.
