2 Construction Safety and Health Ways to reduce risk on construction sites SHAD Safety and Health 2011 Construction is a high-risk industry. The aim of this event is to give practical, hands-on advice on the following topics: HSE Suppor t 1) Falls from Height 2) Temporary works 3) Asbestos 4) Dust (Silicosis) If you are a self-employed builder, manager or run a small construction company, this free half day event is a must. Up to date and practical advice to help you get to grips with health and safety on site. Practical Solutions All attendees to this event can apply for a Work at Height Workshop FREE of charge. This training is aimed at the smaller builder. This is the eighth in the successful series of annual events run by the industry for the industry in the Anglia region, as part of the UK-wide Working Well Together (WWT) campaign. 3 Event Programme! 08:00 REGISTRATION, BREAKFAST AND COFFEE/TEA 08:30 Welcome and introduction 09:00 Various sessions organised giving practical demonstrations and advice on the following: Falls from Height. This accounts for 50% of all deaths. Managing work at height follows a hierarchy of controls avoid, prevent, arrest which begins with the question can the work be done safely from the ground? Fall restraints and safety netting should only be considered as a last resort if other safety equipment cannot be used. Temporary Works. Examples of temporary works include: trenches; excavations; formwork; falsework; shoring; edge protection; scaffolding; site hoarding and site fencing. The aim of the event is to promote awareness and knowledge of the importance of managing temporary works. Asbestos. Asbestos-related diseases kill more people than any other single workrelated cause. All types of asbestos can be dangerous if disturbed. The danger arises when asbestos fibres become airborne, they form a very fine dust. Breathing asbestos dust can cause serious damage to the lungs and cause cancer. Dust. The health hazards of silica come from breathing in the dust. Activities which can expose workers or members of the public to the dust include: stone masonry; blast cleaning of buildings, especially using sand; many demolition processes; concrete scrabbling; cutting or drilling. Breathing in the very fine dust of crystalline silica can lead to the development of silicosis. 13:00 Questions and answers 13:30 Close Refreshments will be provided halfway through the sessions with an opportunity to view exhibits. Trinity Park is on the outskirts of Ipswich, just off the A14. From the A14 take the exit sign-posted Lowestoft A12 and Ipswich East. At the roundabout take the A1156 towards Ipswich. (From the West this will be the third exit and you will pass under the flyover, from the East this will be the first exit). Travel for a little over a mile, passing a Honda Garage on your right, until you come to a roundabout. Take the third exit at the roundabout to enter Trinity Park. From the South - London, Chelmsford & Colchester. Travel along the A12 until it joins the A14 and follow signs for Felixstowe, traveling over the Orwell Bridge. Follow directions from the A14 detailed above. From the North - Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth. Exit the A12 at the Seven Hills Roundabout, pass under the bridge (A14) and follow the A1156 towards Ipswich. Travel a little over a mile, passing a Honda Garage on your right, until you come to a roundabout. Take the third exit at the roundabout to enter Trinity Park. By rail. Trinity Park is 5 miles from Ipswich railway station. There are regular services to London, Norwich and Cambridge. BOOK NOW!
