It s been a big year for ICE celebrating our 200th birthday. I am delighted that using the invisible superheroes branding to describe what we do has helped us make big strides towards removing the cloak of invisibility! This report details just some of the successes of this year and I d like to say a very big thank you to our volunteers who have given so freely of their time to get involved organising and hosting events, researching projects and giving talks. This year s activities have helped the public understand that civil engineers transform people s lives and that it is a fun and inspiring career. Continuing to promote such messages are vital if we are to attract more people into the profession. I d like to wish my successor, Jim Young, the best of luck as Chairman in the year ahead and hope that it is as enjoyable as mine has been. We await to see how proposed changes to the ICE Council will manifest themselves and the impact of Brexit on the industry. Being faced with challenges can bring out the best in us and I feel sure our members will overcome any difficulties as we always do! Lawrence Shackman FICE CEng Chair Membership Whatever stage you are at in your civil engineering career there is an ICE membership grade to match. When you have ICE letters after your name it gives you the recognition and credibility to work in the built environment anywhere in the world. Our upcoming State of the Nation report will provide commentary on the funding and financing of infrastructure and future direction of travel based on sound evidence gathered from the industry. We hope that our input to the Edinburgh Schools and Tram Inquiries will help ensure that learning benefits future schemes and failures are not repeated. 2 ICE Membership is growing and expanding to include other professionals working in the built environment and we welcomed new Associate members (AMICE) Senior representatives of the industry continue to value Fellowship with 25 new Fellows Scotland welcomed new students, technicians and incorporated and chartered members The membership team met with over 1000 members and are working harder than ever to engage with college and university students UK Academic Partnership Pilot project expanded to include University of Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt University. scotland@ice.org.uk ICEScotland

Education and Inspiration Below clockwise: Pupils testing their teamwork to build a balanced cantilever bridge. It s amazing what teamwork and modular construction can build a Giant Tetrahedron! Pupils building their water transportation systems as part of the RREC. Learning about ground improvement to re-build Pisa. Facing outwards and reaching the public has been the focus of our bicentenary year. The message that civil engineers transform lives and that civil engineering is a fun and interesting career were at the heart of this year s activities which involved our members giving talks (Café 200) and developing and delivering tours and trails (Explore Engineering). Scotland s civil engineering prowess was reflected in the large number of Scottish people and projects to make the top 200 inspirational, world-changing projects. Nominated by ICE members and selected by a panel of experts, the chosen 200 projects reflect the breadth, depth and impact of civil engineering achievement Our Pitch 200 competition involved 9 civil engineers explaining an engineering project or concept to a lay audience in only 200 seconds in an entertaining and informative fashion. Cat Salvini from Heriot-Watt won the Scottish final held at the National Museum of Scotland to an 80-strong audience The World s Longest LEGO Bridge came to the St Enoch shopping centre in Glasgow attracting over 600,000 visitors and over 300 pieces of media coverage including a primetime interview with the Regional Director on Saturday STV evening news Popular boat trips on the Forth and Tay told the stories of the cities engineering past, present and future as did Doors Open Tours of Aberdeen Harbour, Aberdeen Western Periphery Route (AWPR) and Glasgow bridges organised by volunteers. Highlands and Islands showcased engineering landmarks on the popular NC500 route. Scotland has held 14 Explore Engineering events in total reaching 2009 people 33 Café 200 events have attracted 3433 people to date including Glasgow s What Have Civil Engineers Ever Done for Us? and Forth Crossings Which One is Best? Debates and Edinburgh s The Story of Our Forth Bridge. Our members inspire the next generation of civil engineers across Scotland. We re always looking for more volunteers to help with our schools outreach programme.
