2 BACKGROUND The Angel Awards were established in The brainchild of Andrew Lloyd Webber, they recognise the work and achievements of ordinary people and community groups across England in saving their local heritage. The annual awards reward those who care for and protect a variety of historic buildings and places, and encourage others to follow suit. This work not only preserves heritage that could be lost to future generations, but keeps alive vital skills. The Angel Awards have become a firm fixture in the heritage calendar and have recognised hundreds of heritage volunteers, experts, custodians and professionals. Awards have been presented to a wide range of people from apprentices to property owners and local congregations. Applicants have included pub landladies, volunteers and vicars! Julian Fellowes, Fiona Bruce and Andrew Lloyd Webber outside The Palace Theatre. Complementing the English awards, the first Scottish Heritage Angel Awards took place in 2015, and this year will see Northern Ireland hosting their first ceremony. With the likely addition of a Welsh Awards in the very near future, the brand is now close to being cemented across all Home Countries, achieving a national celebration of individual volunteers and community groups. 3 PROMOTION Press and Media: Our media team is committed to securing high profile coverage in print and online. The Telegraph will once again be the exclusive media partner for the Awards and will provide coverage during 2017 in print, online and through social media channels. A press release is sent to all relevant local media announcing the shortlist and winners, achieving a good spread of coverage across local press, with winners interviewed for local newspapers and radio. In 2016 the Angel Awards achieved widespread media coverage, with 9 pieces featuring in national newspapers (print and online) and 16 pieces covered by regional press, both print and broadcast. Marketing: Our marketing team work closely with other national heritage organisations such as The Heritage Alliance, The Heritage Lottery Fund and Civic Voice to promote the call for applications on websites and to members via newsletters. Historic England will also promote the Awards heavily in our own newsletter which actively engages 80,000 people. Social Media: Historic England promotes the Awards via our successful social media channels from the day the awards are open for applications to the night of the ceremony. We have more than 190,000 Twitter followers and more than 14,000 likes on Facebook. Our posts are re-tweeted by heritage organisations and the shortlisted groups, as well as by high-profile judges such as historian and broadcaster Bettany Hughes, and Andrew Lloyd Webber himself CATEGORIES This year will see England, Scotland and Northern Ireland competing for the best overall UK winner. decided by the angel awards judges and available for sponsorship 1. 4 APPLICATIONS AND JUDGING A media campaign will be launched in Spring 2017 with calls for entries for each award category. Significant resource is committed to this process from within Historic England to ensure the widest possible reach and to provide applicants with support and advice on their submissions. Each Award is determined through a threestage judging process. All eligible entries are first considered by an expert group of Historic England staff. Here any applications not meeting the essential criteria are removed. Next, representatives from across the heritage sector discuss the long list of entries and agree the four most exceptional entries per category, generating the official shortlist for the Awards. All shortlisted projects will appear in a short film that is produced by an external film company. The films are used to promote the awards on the Historic England website, to encourage voting in the Historic England Followers and Telegraph Readers Favourite category and are shown at the awards ceremony. After the ceremony the shortlisted groups are permitted to use the films on their own project websites or to promote their projects further. Finally, chaired by Andrew Lloyd Webber, a distinguished panel of expert judges meets to discuss the short-listed projects and to agree the Award winners. As Chair, Andrew Lloyd Webber is advised by the Chief Executive of Historic England, Duncan Wilson, as well as the panel of judges which will include TV presenter Bettany Hughes and Restoration Man George Clarke. AWARDS CEREMONY The 2017 Angel Awards ceremony will take place in The Palace Theatre, Central London. Individuals or groups representing all shortlisted projects are invited to the ceremony which is also attended by a 500-strong audience, made up of parliamentarians, heritage sector professionals, Historic England Commissioners, supporters, representatives from culture and the arts, livery societies and Trustees and guests of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. The Awards will be hosted by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Bettany Hughes; previously TV presenter Clare Balding and antiques dealer and television presenter Paul Martin have hosted the show. Andrew Lloyd Webber also invites high profile guests to present individual awards, in the past these have included Fiona Bruce, Graham Norton; Connie Fisher, Dame Esther Rantzen and Lord Fellowes. Winners are presented with a bespoke framed certificate. All shortlisted projects and VIP guests, including all sponsors, will be invited to the after-show party, which takes place at an exclusive venue close to The Palace Theatre. 6 EVALUATION We use the well-established Government Communications Service evaluation framework to measure the success of the awards.
