1 ABOUT NEXT GENERATION RAIL Following the success of the last four years, The University of Sheffield's Transport Innovation Centre Sheffield (TICS) and industry partners are organising the 5th Next Generation Rail Conference, to take place in Sheffield on 27 June and 28 June. WHO IS IT FOR? Next Generation Rail is attended by 200 of the brightest PhD students, early-career researchers, young rail professionals and apprentices, in order to promote interaction between tomorrow s rail leaders and educators. WHY SHOULD I ATTEND? The conference will offer valuable training and learning opportunities to enhance your skills and support your career progression. The programme includes a choice of technical site visits, a series of interactive workshops led by innovation experts and lots of networking and team building activities. These include the Next Generation Rail Dinner on Tuesday night.

Delegates are welcome to move streams to get a broad understanding of all the all topics PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INTELLIGENT MOBILITY INNOVATION IN RAIL ENGINEERING Whatever your company, soft skills in leadership, team building and networking will always benefit your career. Intelligent Mobility is all about taking a different approach to the challenges that have traditionally beset the transport sector, whether it be congestion, pollution or the lack of integration between different means of transport. Workshops from leading industrial figures will give an overview of the exciting future in the development of rail technology. 5 PROGRAMME- CONFERENCE 27TH JUNE 2017 Workshop Hosts David Clark -Railway Industry Association Technical Director Workshop: Non-Technical Barriers to Innovation David is a chartered engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers with over 30 years rail industry experience. His earlier career includes being Deputy Director, Rail Technical at the Department for Transport, prior to which he was a Director for two of the major rail infrastructure contractors having started his career with British Rail. He has been responsible for large operational and project delivery teams, securing major contracts, corporate strategy and business development and, more recently for technical strategy and innovation. Lucy Prior -The Rail Alliance Workshop Stream - Intelligent Mobility Lucy comes to the Rail Alliance with a broad and varied railway background. She has worked in the rail sector for a number of years working for manufacturing companies on both the infrastructure and rolling stock sides of the market and has focused amongst other things on export and domestic sales, marketing and business development. 6 PROGRAMME- CONFERENCE 27TH JUNE 2017 Workshop Hosts Christos Mexias - Workshop Keeping Change on Track Business Change Manager, Digital Railway Network Rail Christos joined Network Rail in 2015 as a graduate and now works as a Business Change Manager, supporting the Digital Railway programme in rolling out various technology and data projects across the business. Previously, Christos has spent time in various Operations departments from train planning to performance improvement and network enhancements, and in a moment of madness even trained to be a signaller. Christos is also involved with Young Rail Professionals (an organisation you should all join) as he believes there is more to a career in rail than trainspotting. 7 PROGRAMME- CONFERENCE 27TH JUNE 2017 Workshop Hosts Michael Milner - RenlimM Workshop: Understanding the Innovation Pathway with Liam Henderson Michael Milner is an experienced senior manager, recognised in the rail and public sector for his unique approach to helping businesses understand and realise their transformation vision. He is now the Director of RenlimM where he expertly helps clients form a clear and stable structure for complex projects before supporting them develop how best to achieve it. Workshop Stream: Innovation In Rail Liam Henderson - The Rail Innovation Group Workshop: Understanding the Innovation Pathway with Michael Milner Liam Henderson is an independent transport planner and an advocate for a more passenger-focussed transport network. His consultancy experience includes leading on a variety of projects, including feasibility and business cases for rail and Tube extensions; station upgrade plans; scoping requirements for new trains; and creating simple narratives to justify investment.

He has gained a reputation for his expertise and his creative and businesslike approaches that enable teams and groups to explore and address issues facing them in a constantly changing environment. Jon Colman - Red Vanilla - Jon has been delivering highly engaging training and development workshops for over 20 years. 9 PROGRAMME- SITE VISITS 28TH JUNE 2017 Site Visits - Doncaster Rail Cluster On Wednesday, 28th June 2017 delegates will have a choice of site visits to attend.. Please note that places are limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis. s with booking forms to be sent out before the event. Mention Doncaster around the world and the chances are that people will think railways. The very first locomotive works were established in the heart of the town centre in 1853 by the Great Northern Railway, transforming Doncaster from a peaceful Georgian market town into an engineering superpower. Doncaster remains an important railway town to this day and was chosen to be the site of the new National College for High-Speed Rail, which opens in September this year. In partnership with Business Doncaster, Next Generation Rail site visits will include options to visit.

10 PROGRAMME- SITE VISITS 28TH JUNE 2017 Site Visits - Doncaster Rail Cluster Hitachi Rail Europe Hitachi Rail Europe (HRE), the company building and maintaining new intercity trains, is on schedule to employ 250 people at their newly built Doncaster depot. The depot is hiring a brand new team to maintain new fleets of intercity trains inspired by Japanese bullet trains, which are due to start running next year, connecting northern cities to London and Scotland. Located on Lakeside, Doncaster, the National College for High-Speed Rail will comprise circa 76,000 sq ft of teaching and workshop space, including specialist rail equipment such as 150m of external track and catenary. Along with Birmingham, it will train thousands of engineers to meet HS2 s future needs, as well as those in the wider rail sector, by providing a real workplace environment to prepare students for work on high-speed rail infrastructure. The workshop has been established in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, for almost a century. Foot Wear -you must wear appropriate safety shoes or boots (no flat or open toes shoes) Wabtec Rail Limited Wabtec Rail has developed an expertise in the life extension, overhaul, maintenance and. refurbishment of railway rolling stock. Located on a 22-acre site, Doncaster Works has a proud railway history, being the birthplace of famous steam locomotives such as the Flying Scotsman and Mallard. Now a Museum to its Industrial past, Kelham will host Next Generation Rail's evening networking meal providing an interesting and exciting backdrop to the event.
