It has been personalised with the White Ensigna of the Royal Navy which is flown on British Royal Navy ships and consists of the St George s Cross with the Union Flag in the top left corner, this is a lovely unique cover for 5 months ARB Liverpool - Belfast carried on the Flying Boat Calcutta with a Liverpool Civic Week September cachet. 50 ARR King George V ½d photogravure FDC, flown Liverpool - Glasgow. 75 ARB Belfast - Liverpool carried on the Flying Boat Calcutta with a Liverpool Civic Week September cachet. 50 ARE261A 1935 George V visits Mildenhall as Air Marshall of Great Britain with scarce RAF Mildenhall temporary PO postmark and all four Silver Jubilee values. 75 ARC20J 1927 Crash Mail, London - East Africa, plane had a mechanical failure at Lake Victoria and the mail was carried by surface means in this envelope with crash cachet. 85 ARC20L 1935 Marseille- South America crash postcard with Raid Interrompu cachet, carried on Paul Codos and Maurice Rossi world record distance attempt, flight crashed at Porto Praia, Portugal. 85

2 The First South African Aerial Post In 1911 the Cape Peninsular Flying Fortnight was launched to promote interest amongst the general public and establish a South African flying school. The event ran from the 21st December until January 3rd during which time two aircrafts, a Blèriot monoplane and a Paterson biplane, were used for several demonstration flights in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kimberley. The First South African Aerial Post commenced on December 27th 1911 when Evelyn Driver flew a Blèriot monoplane between Kenilworth Race Course to Oldham s Field, Muizenberg. The flight took seven and a half minutes to cover the eight mile journey and carried specially produced postcards which were met by Postmaster General Hutchings at Muizenberg, who in return presented Driver with the return post which was flown back to Kenilworth later that day. The postcards cost 10 cents each and were designed by the South African Posts and Telegraphs department who based them on the stationary produced for the first British Aerial Post earlier in 1911, and were printed by Messers Whitehead & Morris. A special hand stamp was also designed with which the postcards were franked. A total of 729 postcards were carried on the 27th December, and over the subsequent 10 months a total of 2597 postcards were produced and flown. We have two examples of the postcards available for the first time which were both flown on the 30th December The frankings are very clear and both are in good condition, especially considering their age. 3 William Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC Lord Sempill ( ) was a Scottish record-breaking aviation pioneer and was infamously discovered to have operated as a Japanese spy during the Second World War. ARO Port Moresby, Papua - Sydney with registered Port Moresby label, flown by Lord Sempill on his DH80A Puss Moth G-ABJU. There were 112 flown in total across the full flight but only 7 were flown on this particular leg which also have a registered label, a superb example for 10 months ARO Australia-Papua-Australia, one of 4 flown and signed by Lord Sempill, flown on his Australian tour (over 10,000 miles total), plus a signed typed letter to Mr Eusits whom he carried the mail for, two great items which we want to keep together for 5 months Letter Cover betty@buckinghamcovers.com His aviation career began as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps before serving with the RNAS and RAF in World War One. In 1921 Sempill led a military mission to Japan aimed at showcasing modern British aircraft and aviation technology. It was around this time that he first began supplying the Imperial Japanese government with top secret military information. Sempill s activities were discovered by British Intelligence but was not prosecuted due to fears that it would reveal British success in decoding Japanese communications and because of Sempill s place in the upper echelons of the British Establishment, especially his links to the Royal Family. However he was eventually forced to retire from the Royal Navy in 1941 after being discovered to have again passed on secret material to Tokyo shortly before Japan entered the war. We have never had the signature of Lord Sempill before and are delighted to be able to offer these two stunning items, both in great condition. 3

Rudd. 15 The King Albert Line During the First World War an area in the South-West of Belgium remained the domain of King Albert I. The area known as La Panne housed the Kings headquarters and Albert began using military aircraft for irregular flights to Folkestone. Civilian mail was carried from the 1st March 1915 and the service became known as the King Albert Line. The mail was postmarked with the Belgian Headquarters postmark and often, but not always, had the initials SM written in the top right hand corner. This stood for service mail or surete militaire. Some mail have the letters SMB which is believed to be Service Militaire Belgique. The crash was also attributed to low cloud and the failure of the first officer to put on the landing lights. The accident killed 28 of the 36 on board.
