1 TAKE OFF!December 2018 Issue 30 A TRULY ICONIC PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY This extraordinary cover has been signed by aviation legend Beryl Markham who in 1936 carried it from England to Nova Scotia on the world s first non-stop east to west transatlantic flight. Only 26 covers were flown on this famous flight, none were postmarked but each were applied with a special cachet showing the flight details and were signed by Markham. This really is a very rare cover, which we have never offered before. YOURS FOR per month for 6 months RU It was on September 4th that Beryl Markham took off from Abingdon, England and after a 20 hour flight her plane The Messenger crashed due to the icing of the fuel tank vents at Baleine Cove, Nova Scotia. Despite the crash Markham had successfully achieved the feat of flying nonstop east to west and established herself as an aviation pioneer. 12 Survivors of the Hindenburg Disaster Did you know? The LZ 129 Hindenburg was in service from March 1936 until it was destroyed on May 6th 1937 when it caught fire during an attempt to dock at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Kurt Schönherr - Helmsman Schönherr had been flying on airships as a helmsman since 1913 and had served aboard The L3 during WWI which was the first German Zeppelin over England on January 19th 1915 when it bombed Great Yarmouth. However L3 crashed less than a month later and Schönherr spent the rest of the war in captivity. As the Hindenburg came in for its doomed landing Schönherr was at the rudder wheel. When he realised the crash was imminent he noticed the ship lean to starboard and correctly decided his best bet was to escape through the port side. He subsequently dived out of a small window and stumbled clear of the wreckage. ARZ67A 150 Kurt Schönherr signed postcard with 1931 Graf Zeppelin flown postmark and Hannover, Germany arrival datestamp. 15 per month for 10 months ARZ per month for 5 months Kurt Schönherr signed postcard with 1931 Graf Zeppelin flown postmark and Lausanne, Switzerland arrival datestamp betty@buckinghamcovers.com Theodor Ritter - Engine Mechanic Ritter had worked on the Hindenburg s engines during their development and was subsequently selected as the inflight engine mechanic. As the fatal descent began Ritter was in the forward portside engine car relaying orders from the control car to the crew at the engine throttle. He witnessed the upper hull of the ship be engulfed in flames and as the forward part of the ship rose to a 45 degree angle, Ritter was forced to cling to whatever he could to stop him falling into the still turning propeller. Ritter was stunned by a blow to the head and when he came back to his senses he was running from the inferno, unsure of how he escaped. Want to spread the payments on these amazing covers?
