10 20TH CENTURY MAIDEN VOYAGES SS Normandie The SS Normandie was built in Saint-Nazaire for the French Line Compagnie Gènèrale Transatlantique. When she entered service she was the largest and fastest passenger ship and is still today the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built. She operated out of her home port of Le Harve and made 139 westbound transatlantic crossings to New York, and held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing on several occasions. During World War II, she was renamed USS Lafayette but in 1942 whilst being converted to a troopship she caught fire and capsized onto her side on the Hudson River. She was salvaged but later scrapped in SHP SS Normandie maiden voyage cover with blue illustration on the left side and French Line label on the reverse, New York postmark RMS Mauretania The RMS Mauretania was completed in May 1939 and was the first ship built for the Cunard White Star Company following the merger in 1934 of Cunard and White Star Line. She had a tonnage of 35,739 gross, an overall length of 772 feet, and with a maximum speed of 26 knots. However with the outbreak of war her commercial service did not last long and she was requisitioned by the Government and sent to America in December 1939 where she was converted into a troopship. After the war and a major refurbishment, Mauretania returned to serving as a transatlantic ocean liner and cruises to the Caribbean and Mediterranean. However by the early 1960s she faced stiff competition from modern liners, and her final voyage in 1965 to the shipbreaking yard in Fife, Scotland was captained by John Treasure Jones. SHP RMS Mauretania maiden voyage with red cachet and illustration of the ship 1931 Wilkins-Ellsworth Arctic Submarine Expedition Sir George Wilkins and Lincoln Ellsworth were Australian and American polar explorers respectively who led an Arctic expedition via submarine for scientific and oceanographic research. The submarine was christened The Nautilus and an 18 man crew chosen. They departed from New York but many problems befell the expedition and were later forced to scuttle the submarine off the Norwegian coast due to unrepairable damage. Whilst, they did not reach the pole they came close enough to test core ice samples, the salinity of water, the polar effect on gravity, and proved that submarines were capable of operating in such cold temperatures. SHP New York - North Pole, Wilkins- Ellsworth Arctic Submarine Expedition SS New Amsterdam The SS New Amsterdam was a Dutch ocean liner built in Rotterdam for the Holland America Line, and recognised as Holland America s finest ship. She was in service from and at 36,982 tonnes was the largest liner constructed in the Netherlands. Her advance design which incorporated modern fire resistance and air conditioning features saw her dubbed the Ship of Tomorrow. During the war she was requisitioned by the British after the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and served as an allied troop transport. SHP SS New Amsterdam, Maiden Voyage cover between Rotterdam and New York SS America The SS America was an ocean liner built in 1940 for the United States Lines. Famously two members of her crew, Franz Joseph Stigler and Erwin Wilheim Siegler, were later discovered to have been Nazi spies and part of the infamous Duquesne Spy Ring. While serving on the SS America they gathered information on ship movements and military defences around the Panama Canal. During the war she was later requisitioned as a troop transport and renamed USS West Point. SHP005S SS America First Voyage, New York - Puerto Rico - New York. 11 1970 SS GREAT BRITAIN On the 23rd June 1970 The Great Ship arrived back in Bristol from the Falklands where she had been left since 1886 after being damaged in a gale off Cape Horn. Launched on the 19th July 1843 she created a sensation wherever in the world she visited. After 31 years service as a steamer her engines were taken out and she carried on as a sailing ship, ending up being used as storage for wool and coal in the Falklands. Since her arrival back in Bristol she has been completely renovated and has pride of place in the city where she was built.
