4 4 LEARNING CENTER A Tale of Two Franklins - (or Why Your Son Can t Find a Job ) Mario Bottoni, CPA Most of us are painfully aware of our current economic malaise especially the high unemployment rate and debt crisis. What most of us may not be aware of, however, is that this is a self-inflicted wound. In an effort to highlight the need for supporting our local community, I would like to illustrate the effect our spending habits have on our local economy. The following facts and figures were unashamedly stolen (with permission) from the Institute for Self Reliance s study A Case Study in Midcoast Maine. A full copy of the study can be downloaded from their website Per the study, which included participation by eight locally owned businesses, the Institute determined that the local business spent 44.6 percent of their revenue within the surrounding two counties. Another 8.7% was spent elsewhere in the state of Maine. If we consider the 8.7 percent amount to also be local, and since we pay state taxes we should, a total of 53.3 percent of every dollar spent locally remained within the community. This in-state spending included: wages and benefits paid to local employees (28.1percent of total revenue); inventory, supplies and services from other local businesses (16.9 percent); profits that accrued to local owners (5.4 percent) taxes paid to local and state government (2.4 percent); and contributions to local charities (0.4 percent). For you math geeks, the missing 0.1 percent is a rounding error. In contrast, a typical big box store spends 14.1 percent of its revenue within the local state economy, mostly in the form of payroll. spending multiplier effect. In other words, that locally spent 53.3 percent, gets spent again and again and.as is often the case, to really get to the truth, we must follow the money: Our two friends, Jack Franklin and Fred Franklin ($100 each) decide to go on a trip. Jack Franklin goes to the local restaurant where he is fully spent. Since 53.3 percent of Jack s remainder remains (yes, English is my second language) in the community, it is only logical for us to assume it will get spent again. If that 53.3 percent is also spent locally, $28.51 ($53.3 x.533) will still stick around to be spent again and so on. Our other friend, Fred Franklin decides to visit the local Wal-Mart. He is also fully spent. However most of Fred ends up on a slow boat to China with his puny 14.1 percent remainder having a much smaller benefit for the rest of us. Sadly, most of Fred has been pretty much wasted. If we look at the total impact on the facing page, we see that Fred Franklin only generated $ of economic activity before he was totally spent, while Jack Franklin produced $ or almost double. These translate directly into jobs. You will get different opinions on this, but it is my contention that if all our purchases were targeted towards local businesses and those businesses in turn targeted their purchases from local vendors, we could virtually eliminate unemployment from our communities. The result of not doing so is, again, a self-inflicted wound. While the Maine study gives us some insight on the result of our actions, it actually underestimates the effect of local spending because it ignores the
