2 2 PRESIDENT S NOTE... SPRING HAS ARRIVED!! At least the calendar says so. It is truly amazing how everyone's spirits and outlook changes with less snow on the ground, higher temperatures, sight of bare ground and the chirping of birds in the trees. Your Chamber has been busy right through the winter months, but with spring here, we are ramping it up even more. We kick off the spring season with the Business BEFORE Hours at the, followed by our big fundraiser, the 13th Annual Spring Dinner and Auction. There will be plenty of networking opportunities being plugged into the calendar throughout the rest of the year so be sure to watch your s, the newsletter and our website to keep up with the Chamber happenings. I am pleased to report that our membership renewal campaign was successful. Thank you to all the members and the Board who reached out personally to encourage membership renewal. Our next phase is generating new members with a reach out effort by Teresa Hudson, our Office Administrator. She will be reaching out to existing members and cultivating new ones as she goes out into our communities starting in May. If you know of a potential member, please let her know and she will contact them. HOWEVER - promoting the Chamber and reaching out to potential members is the responsibility of ALL OF US. Only together can we succeed and grow, thereby strengthening what we do and continuing to promote doing business locally and providing various resources for our members for continued success. I should have more to report about our website advertising opportunities in the May newsletter and blasts. Stay tuned. Stay warm... err... I mean enjoy the warmth and sunshine coming our way!! LOL! Mike Skeele Michael J. Skeele, CIC, CPIA Skeele Insurance TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE OPTIONS FOR OUR CHAMBER MEMBERS WEBPAGES! 4 4 Welcome new members Solvay Bank, Karen Zaroch Clear Mind Body Institute, Dewey G. Meyers, PhD, MD Heckled Hen, Josephine Snook Ironwood, John Freightenburgh RG Hence & Sons Garage Inc., Dave & Gary Hence KBM Management, Andrew Miller NY Disc and Spine Care, Dr. Daniel Haney Clear Mind Counseling-Consulting Services, Michael Pettinelli High Point Advisors, Mathew Barber The first written records of the an annual meeting of school district No. 6 in Manlius Village are those of October 13, Some records were lost in the shuffling of schools, but the trustees reported that the rate bill and taxes for the previous year, 1862, had been $308.32; the receipts for the year were $ and expenditures were $ There were six faculty members; primary & intermediate teachers were the only ones classified as to duties. In 1889, the faculty and salaries ranged from $1000 for the principal and between $400 and $200 for teachers. A "foreign scholar" lived outside the district. In 1904, a new school was built and became known as Manlius High School, even though it consisted of grades one through twelve. Just as FM is known as a leader in state education, the same was true for the Manlius High School. In appearance and equipment it was considered one of the better schools in the state with its classrooms, library, laboratories, study hall, assembly hall seating 800, and large playground. Electricity was used. It cost the school $2 a month. Next month I will discuss schools in Fayetteville. At one time, Manlius High School and the Fayetteville School were bitter rivals.
