1 PRESENTS COUNTRY SPOTLIGHT: Peru WHERE IN THE WORLD Capital: Lima 1
2 GEOGRAPHY Located in South America Shares borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile It s the third largest country in South America It is home to the Amazon Rainforest, and the Andes, as well as some deserts, wide beaches, and fertile valleys Because it has so many different ecosystems, Peru is home to a wider variety of plants and animals than most other countries on Earth Fun fact: To the Quechua Indians Peru means "land of abundance." A BRIEF HISTORY The first South American civilization was the Chavin - they appeared in Peru in 900BC but disappeared by 200 AD The Incas were one of the greatest indigenous societies in South America, they founded their capital at Cuzco in 1300, and conquered the Chima in 1466 and held onto their land until the Spanish wiped them out in 1572 Peru gains its independence from Spain in 1821 Peru goes to war with Chile from An economic depression hits Peru pretty badly in 1930, and the first of several coups is staged by the Peruvian Army In 1980 Peru holds an election In 2009 the US-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement came into effect Today, Peru s economy is growing steadily 2
3 CULTURE Spanish is the official language of most of the country, however Quechua and Aimara are also spoken Majority are Catholics, but religious festivals have strong Spanish influence, and are also an example of how different beliefs and religions of Peru's pre- Hispanic cultures co-exist Peru has close to 3,000 popular annual festivals including patron saint feasts, processions, carnivals and rituals, praising God, and demonstrating their respect for nature and the celebration of freedom Peruvian food is varied: soups and stews, corn pancakes (or for that matter, corn anything!), rice, eggs and vegetables are often featured in regional cuisines. Seafood is excellent, even in the highlands. Local specialties include ceviche, seafood prepared in lemon juice; lechón, suckling pig; and cuy, whole roasted guinea pig-however, some delicacies may only be for the most adventurous stomachs!?! BENEFITS OF STUDYING ABROAD IN Peru Friendly locals Great Sites: visit the old Inca Empire capital and surrounding mountains, beautiful beaches, amazing nightlife, and delicious cuisine Average daily temps between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit 3
