5 CITY OF SEOUL As the capital and largest city in the Republic of Korea, Seoul is well known for its advanced IT infrastructure, robust shopping, safe dusk-till-dawn nightlife, and speedy convenience which offer visitors anything and everything within reach at any given time of day. Through six decades of unprecedented economic growth known as The Miracle on the Han River, Seoul has risen from the ashes of civil war to truly become a cosmopolitan city. Located in the western part of the central region of the peninsula, the word "seoul" means "capital city" in Korean and has been the center of the country throughout its long history. Home to over 10 million citizens, the city is surrounded by vast mountains parted by the Han River. This stretch of water flows horizontally across the city, dividing it into two, north and south sections. CLIMATE Average monthly temperatures Seoul has all four clearly distinguished seasons. Spring begins around early March; cherry blossom and flower festivals around the country signal the official coming of spring. Although summer months can get oppressively hot and humid, many keep a light jacket or sweater handy as public transportation and facilities are heavily air-conditioned during this period. For about a month, starting mid-july, is the rainy season. Autumn starts around September and boasts beautiful scenery as leaves begin to turn into fall colors. Temperatures begin to drop mid-october as the weather transitions from the rainy season to cooler, drier, and less cloudy conditions. This is when cold snaps spread evenly throughout the peninsula with an average of 14.8 C (58.6 F). Winters in Seoul, meanwhile, can get quite harsh with temperatures dropping as low as -15 C (5 F) during the coldest days. 6 TRAVELING TO SEOUL Incheon International Airport, which is one of the newest transportation hubs in Asia, has over 64 airline offices and manages 455 inbound and outbound international flights each day. It is located approximately one hour away from downtown Seoul. The bus costs are around 10,000~16,000 won, and it usually takes about 1 hour, depending on the traffic conditions. 8 PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Public transportation in Korea is remarkably efficient and inexpensive. The subway system is comprised of eight lines and one national railway line, with local buses covering the entire area of Seoul. Taking a bus or the subway to a local destination costs less than USD 1. Taxis are widely available and constitute a safe transportation alternative. Taxis can be hailed on the street or requested by phone. Interpretation service can also be requested by phone. The basic fare of a regular taxi is KRW 3,000. (USD 2.56). The basic fare for a deluxe taxi, which can be identified by its black color and deluxe decal emblazoned on the doors, is KRW 5,000 (USD 4.27). CURRENCY The unit of Korean currency is Won. Korean monetary units are KRW10, KRW50, KRW100, and KRW500 coins, and KRW1,000, KRW5,000, KRW10,000 and KRW50,000 notes Currency Exchange Rate: 1 USD = 1, KRW (as of October 2015) TIME DIFFERENCE Standard Time in Korea is 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +9) LANGUAGE The official Korean language is Korean.
