15 General Information City of Gyeongju Gyeongju was the capital city of Silla for 992 years. It embraces Buddhism, science, and ancient culture that blossomed by the artistry of the Silla people, and the great spirits of Hwarangdo that enabled the unification of the three kingdoms. As the UNESCO World Heritage site, Gyeongju was the co-host city of the 7th World Water Forum. Climate Korea is classed as having a temperature climate with four distinct seasons, but temperature differences between the hottest part of summer and the depths of winter are extreme. Fall in Korea starts around late September and ends around mid-november. The temperature during autumn is pretty cool, usually in the range of 20 C in the beginning and reaching about 10 C towards the end of November. In autumn, Korea is bathed in the most stunning shades of orange and red as the autumn leaves start to bloom. Fall is definitely the best period to visit South Korea. Local Time The Korean local time is 9 hours ahead of GMT (GMT+9). No daylight savings time. Currency The unit of Korean currency is won. Coin denominations are 10 won, 50 won, 100 won, and 500 won. Bank notes are 1,000 won, 5,000 won, 10,000 won, and 50,000 won. Bank checks are circulated in denominations of 100,000 won and over. Foreign currency and traveler s check can be converted into Korean won at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchangers. The exchange rate is subject to market fluctuations. The exchange rate is USD 1 = KRW 1, (as of Sep. 13, 2017). Tax In Korea, a 10% VAT is indirectly added into the price of many of your purchases. At stores that display a Tax Free sign, foreigners are eligible for a tax refund on purchases greater than 30,000 won. Electricity The standard voltage in Korea is 220V.
